Mookie Betts grappling with death of family member during Dodgers absence
Betts was mysteriously absent from Friday's and Saturday's lineup against his former team, the Boston Red Sox, with what the Dodgers called personal issues.
Betts explained to reporters after he returned on Sunday, a 4-3 loss to Boston, that he was dealing with the passing of his stepfather and had flown home to Tennessee to be with his family.

'My stepdad passed,' Betts told reporters. 'So I needed to go home, be with my mom, somebody that's been there in my life from fourth grade until now. So, that was tough for me and the family, but I just needed to be there for my mom and my brothers and sisters.'
'So, it's just a tough time, and there's no real way to really explain something like that outside of just being there and spending time with the family,' Betts added.
Betts' parents, Diana Benedict and Willie Betts, divorced when he was a child.

Betts flew back to Boston by himself on Saturday and appeared as a pinch hitter in the game, although he struck out in that lone at-bat.
Betts, 32, spent the first six years of his career in Boston before being traded to the Dodgers in 2020.
He's been highly productive in his time in Los Angeles, helping them win two World Series, although this has been a particularly a tough year, both on and off the field.

Why Ichiro's savage Marlins joke during Hall of Fame speech gave former exec ‘PTSD'
Former Marlins president David Samson is seemingly very sensitive about the perception of the franchise. That's why when Ichiro Suzuki broke out a zinger about the Marlins during his Baseball Hall of Fame induction speech on Sunday — which the Japanese legend delivered entirely in English — he was not as quick to laugh as the rest of the crowd in Cooperstown. After thanking Samson and former Marlins exec Mike Hill for being in attendance, Ichiro said, 'Honestly, when you guys called to offer me a contract for 2015, I had never heard of your team.' Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post 'You hear your name come out and you're just so overwhelmed with gratitude that your name comes out, and then you hear the Marlins joke. And I immediately thought, 'My God, anything other than that,'' Samson said on 'The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz.' 'You could just tell that people were gonna think that was serious, but it wasn't. We won the World Series in '03, folks. He was in his prime in '03. He knew the Marlins, No. 1. No. 2, he faced us. We played against him. I then had it checked: He was like 8-for-40 against us (8-for-41). We had him dead to rights. Believe me, he keeps track of every at-bat.' Samson, who worked for the Marlins from 2002-17 under owner and father-in-law Jeffrey Loria, explained why he believes Ichiro told the joke and why he wished the 10-time All-Star hadn't said it. AP 'What I then realized is [Ichiro] wanted to let people know what a funny side he has to go with how important his message was during his speech, which I think is one of the most viral and best speeches I ever heard a Hall of Famer give,' Samson said. 'I had a little PTSD because the Marlins are the butt of people's jokes, though we do have two world championships in our franchise history, and we've been to the playoffs recently, twice since COVID. So all of this talk that the Marlins are such a failure, I just don't buy. But I think now people realize that of course Ichiro was joking.' Ichiro began his MLB career in 2001 with the Mariners when he was 27 years old after a prolific run in Japan. He won AL Rookie of the Year and MVP honors in his first season stateside. Ichiro is one of 33 players all-time to have at least 3,000 hits.

Shohei Ohtani strikes out in his first 4 plate appearances, a rare first
CINCINNATI — Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani had another first in his MLB career. Ohtani struck out in his first four plate appearances against the Cincinnati Reds, the first time he has done that in his eight seasons and 981 games in the majors. Against the Seattle Mariners on July 17, 2021, while playing for the Los Angeles Angels, Ohtani popped up to the shortstop in his first at-bat and then struck out in his next four times at the plate. Despite Ohtani's tough night at the plate, the Dodgers rallied for a 5-4 victory on an RBI double by Will Smith in the ninth inning. 'Tonight, I just don't think he saw (Cincinnati starter Nick) Lodolo well at all, clearly. And I think he just got into swing mode,' manager Dave Roberts said. 'When he's (at his) best, he's getting the baseball up, and he's using the big part of the field. And especially in this ballpark where he doesn't need to go to right field. But tonight, just one of those nights that he just couldn't help him help himself from swinging.' Ohtani came into the game on a nine-game hitting streak, where he had gone 11 for 36 with six home runs 13 RBIs and nine runs scored. It is the sixth time the Japanese superstar and reigning NL MVP has struck out four times in a game. It is the second time this season, with the other coming against San Diego on June 17. Lodolo became the 13th pitcher to strike out Ohtani three times in a game. The Reds left-hander got Ohtani to chase a curveball out of the strike zone in the first and fifth innings, and got him looking on a 94.6 mph fastball in the third. 'I was going right after him. I definitely threw some good heaters in some good spots and I was able to spin the ball well too as well,' Lodolo said. Graham Ashcraft then whiffed Ohtani on an inside slider in the seventh. Ohtani was one strike away from his first five strikeout game before he flew out to right field on a 2-2 count in the ninth inning of a 4-4 game. Smith was the next batter and delivered the game-winning hit. Ohtani still leads the majors with 100 runs scored. He is atop the NL in slugging (.612), total bases (254), OPS (.989) and 38 home runs. Roberts hopes Ohtani is more disciplined at the plate in the series finale because Nick Martinez is the same type of pitcher as Lodolo. 'Martinez is gonna be nibbling, and it's going to be cutter and changeup down below. And he's got to get back to the big part of the field and not chase down below,' Roberts said. Ohtani also will be making his seventh pitching start of the season as the Dodgers look for him to go four innings as he comes back from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in 2023. Ohtani is 0-0 with a 1.50 ERA.
