De Blasio watches with glee as candidates attack Cuomo in NYC mayoral debate
NEW YORK — As mayoral hopefuls in Thursday night's Democratic primary debate landed sharp rejoinders against frontrunner Andrew Cuomo, one of the former governor's old foes broke out the popcorn.
Former Mayor Bill de Blasio fired off a series ofgleeful postson X that reveled in the broadsides against Cuomo and lauded the performances of Comptroller Brad Lander, City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams and state Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani, the democratic socialist who is polling second behind Cuomo.
'Wow, @andrewcuomo is REALLY scared of @ZohranKMamdani! He's not even faking it…' de Blasio wrote. 'And Andrew is REALLY disrespecting all the New Yorkers who support Zohran.'
City Comptroller Brad Lander was 'attacking consistently and really rattling Cuomo,' wrote de Blasio, who said the former governor's self-proclaimed executive experience consisted of harassing female employees and making decisions that resulted in the death of nursing home residents during Covid.
The ex-mayor — who spent eight years being tormented by the former governor over issues as quotidian as how to euthanize a deer — called into question the governor's housing record, accused him of dodging a question about the Rent Guidelines Board and lampooned Cuomo's characterization of the subway as infested with crime.
The former governor, of course, had responses for the attacks coming from the dais. He said a report that found he sexually harassed underlings — accusations he has denied — did not result in any criminal charges and was created to hurt him politically. He said his nursing home edicts were consistent with federal guidance during the height of Covid. He has cast the city as poorly run and falling into disrepair on account of the leadership of de Blasio and his successor, New York City Mayor Eric Adams. And he had sharp responses to Mamdani and others over their own legislative records and policies far to the left of his own.
But de Blasio's sustained pile-on reinforced the acrimonious relationship between the two executives and appeared to be almost cathartic for the the former mayor.
'Is @andrewcuomo mimicking dialogue from the 1950's?' de Blasio wrote. 'I fully expect Gregory Peck or Jimmy Stewart to join him on stage.'
Asked over text message Thursday night if he planned to make an endorsement, de Blasio took a much more laconic approach: "Nope."

New Nevada traffic ticket laws to go into effect
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Nevada lawmakers unanimously passed and Gov. Joe Lombardo signed a proposal to amend the state's traffic-ticket system. Senate Bill 359, which will become law Oct. 1, gives courts flexibility to reduce the amount a driver needs to pay upfront. Courts interpreted the current law as a driver having to pay the full amount of a ticket before a hearing. The 8 News Now Investigators first looked into the issue this spring when a retiree had to pay her $417 ticket in full before her court hearing. Before Senate Bill 359, Nevada law required her to pay the fine in full — whether she wanted to fight the ticket or not. Since 2021, Nevada lawmakers, both Democrats and Republicans, have changed most traffic infractions, like a speeding ticket, to be a civil infraction, not a criminal one. That means tickets no longer carry the threat of jail time, and missed court appearances do not really matter in the long run since the court may already have your money. Democratic State Sen. Melanie Scheible sponsored the change, which passed unanimously. The governor signed it last week. In addition, changes written in Senate Bill 359 now combine civil and criminal infractions — minor speeding offenses versus driving without a license — and allow a judge to deal with both in one hearing. The new law also gives judges more discretion, not a 'presumption in favor' to reduce a traffic ticket to a nonmoving violation should the driver pay all their fines and have a good driving record. Newsom tries to give Trump the Biden treatment, says he's ‘not all there'
California Gov. Gavin Newsom said President Donald Trump had seemingly lost a step mentally in a new interview, in an unmistakable comparison to former President Joe Biden. During an episode of The New York Times' 'The Daily' podcast published Thursday, the Democratic governor accused Trump of being 'not all there,' saying that the president's been making up a different reality than what is actually going on with the federal government's response to the unrest in Los Angeles. 'And he's not all there. I mean that,' Newsom told Times podcast host Michael Barbaro, who seemed to be stunned by the description. As Newsom told it, Trump's behavior regarding the riots has been erratic and unhinged. 'Then I talked to the president. Hours later, to your point, I wake up, and I'm Newscum again,' he said, referencing a nickname Trump has called the governor on multiple occasions. Flag Day salutes to mark Army's 250th birthday in Newport Beach, Dana Point
Even as anti-Trump protesters across the nation participate in 'No Kings Day' demonstrations Saturday, including several such gatherings in Orange County to counter the military parade the president has called for in Washington, D.C., a couple of traditional local Flag Day ceremonies are planned. The occasion will be marked in Newport Beach on Saturday, with a community Flag Day event hosted by Sara Weber, a member of the City Council, to celebrate the 250th birthday of the U.S. Army. The event, which starts at 11:30 a.m. and runs until noon, will feature 250 U.S. flags that were installed Thursday on the Newport Beach Civic Center lawn. Newport Beach resident Keira Wilkes will sing the national anthem, the presentation of colors will be led by Commander Brian Fleming of American Legion Newport Harbor Post 291 and the flag-folding ceremony will be overseen by Orange County Boy Scouts. Assemblywoman Diane Dixon (R-Newport Beach) will address those gathered for the event. Following her remarks, Weber will introduce veteran Angelo Pasciuti. Parking is available adjacent to the Newport Beach Civic Center, 100 Civic Center Drive, in the parking structure. Farther south along the coastline, Baby Beach in Dana Point will be the venue for O.C. Supervisor Katrina Foley's annual Flag Day festivities, also on Saturday and also featuring 250 American flags. This ceremony is to honor of all military personnel, firefighters, police officers, medical personnel, and other first responders, according to organizers. Hours are 2 to 4 p.m. The ceremony will be led by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9934. Baby Beach is located at 34451 Ensenada Place. 'No Kings Day' demonstrations are also planned to take place along the coast, from Seal Beach to Dana Point, according to organizers, including one in Newport Beach. — Daily Pilot Staff
