American comedy series Deli Boys is out now on Disney+.
Created by Abdullah Saeed, the 10-episode series, parallelly releasing on Hulu, tackles two Pakistani American brothers, Mir (Asif Ali) and Raj Dar (Saagar Shaikh), whose lives are turned upside down when they discover the secret criminal life of their convenience store-magnate father (Iqbal Theba) following his sudden death.
Abdullah said that instead of focusing on representing certain ethnic groups, he focused on the entertainment aspect, while also writing from his own environment.
'I was speaking from what I know, which is being one of a pair of Pakistani brothers,' he said.
'I wasn't trying too hard with the representation stuff and I think that's what really helped. It's truly just entertainment. The by-product is that you get to learn about Pakistanis, Pakistani-Americans specifically.'
This is Abdullah's first fully scripted creation. He previously has been a hip hop and electronic music journalist, composer and documentaries' host.
'The thing I've learned as a screenwriter - and this didn't happen to me as much when I was a journalist - is that you end up living the story of your script in some way,' he said.
'It really did feel to me like the boys embarked on essentially a career shift, a career opportunity where, like, okay now we're dealing in this heightened and somewhat dangerously glamorised world that they're in. They're navigating it and every episode they learn something new.
'For me, as a first-time creator of a scripted show, it really was that process. I was looking to my fellow executive producers to really educate me and guide me. It was an incredible learning experience,' he added.

NON-FICTION book How to Lose Your Mother: A Daughter's Memoir by Molly Jong-Fast is set to hit the shelves on June 10. In it, the author dives into the complicated relationship she always had with her mother, Erica Jong, a famous American novelist and poet. She also describes how watching her mother 'slipping away' due to memory loss has been affecting her; Erica, who was diagnosed with dementia, is currently residing in a retirement home. Erica Jong is best known for her 1973 novel Fear of Flying, which resonated with women who felt stuck in unfulfilling marriages and helped start a feminist movement. According to Molly, Erica never got over being famous, elaborating that she was never able to process drifting away from the public consciousness after once being an inescapable name in the media, which made her 'inaccessible'. 'I wish I had asked her why, if she loved me so much, she didn't ever want to spend time with me, but there was no way she would have ever given me a straight answer. And besides, in her view, she did spend time with me — in her head, in her writing, in the world she inhabited,' Molly said in an interview. Following in her mother's footsteps, Molly is also a writer and journalist who holds a Master's degree in Fine Arts and is the author of two novels, Normal Girl (2000) and The Social Climber's Handbook (2011).

‘Sky's the limit' for Tiafoe at French Open

AFP | Paris Frances Tiafoe believes the 'sky's the limit' for him after reaching the French Open quarter-finals for the first time on Sunday. The American downed German world number 66 Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) in the last 16 to set up a match with Lorenzo Musetti for a semi-final place. It will be Tiafoe's first ATP quarter-final since finishing runner-up at a low-key event in Houston in March. 'It's been horrible. I've been travelling around, and it hasn't been fun at all,' he said. 'Kind of faced it. After that it gave me space to just play. You know, when I can play, I can play. This is not really something that's like a shock. 'When I'm playing well, I'm there and present and having fun, I think the sky's the limit for me.' The 27-year-old, who has reached at least the quarters at the last three US Opens, is yet to drop a set in Paris and is confident he can go even further. 'I've been the super dark horse. I don't think anyone is really thinking that I was going to even be in this position,' added Tiafoe. 'But at the same time, I don't really look at it like house money. 'Now that I'm here, I'm like, 'Let 's win'. I was having dinner yesterday. I'm like, ' Yeah, feeling great, butlet's keep winning ' . There 's no thing more fun than winning. 'Once I get my feet going and matches under me, I'm dangerous. Then I'm feeling really good, and I'll play anybody.'
