Festival highlights Oman's credentials as kiteboarding hub

Muscat Daily2 days ago
Al Ashkharah – Oman Kite Festival 2025 is continuing its journey along the sultanate's coastline with the third leg of Oman Downwinder reaching Al Ashkharah, as 90 international and local riders advance through the multi-stage event aimed at highlighting the country's coastal tourism and marine sports potential.
Since its launch on July 15, the fleet of kiteboarders has crossed some of Oman's most scenic and wind-rich marine locations, including Bar al Hikman, Masirah Island and Ras Ruwais, en route to Pink Lagoon.
Organised by Omran Group in collaboration with Oman Sail, Visit Oman and Oman Adventure Centre, the festival is part of a broader effort to position Oman as a global destination for adventure sports and experience-based tourism.
The second leg on Sunday, covering a 42km stretch between Masirah Island and Ras al Ruwais, saw 15 riders race along clear waters and an unspoilt coastline. Omani athlete Al Mukhtar Abdul Karim al Mujaini claimed first place, followed by fellow Omani Ayman Abdullah al Ghafri in second and Egypt's Ahmed Mohammed in third.
After two stages, Mujaini leads the overall rankings, followed by Mohammed and Ghafri.
The Masirah Island leg also hosted the Coastal Race, contested by 33 riders. Germany's Fryderyk Cuba secured the top spot, with Mujaini finishing second and Marta Morlo of Poland in third. A Big Air Show and Freestyle Show were also held, giving participants a platform to demonstrate their technical skills and the dynamic capabilities of modern kiteboarding equipment.
With its open beaches and consistent wind, Masirah Island has emerged as a promising venue for future international events, reinforcing Oman's place on the global map of kiteboarding and marine adventure sports.
Shaima al Asmi, Project Manager of the festival, said the event's impact is already visible. 'It has brought together international athletes and raised the profile of our coastline. It promotes Oman as a year-round destination for adventure seekers, especially during the summer season,' she said. Shaima al Asmi
Mujaini described the second stage as physically demanding. 'It was a tough leg with strong winds and high waves,' he said. 'The level of competition has risen with each stage, but I'm pleased with my performance.'
The festival now moves to Al Ashkharah, followed by Ras al Jinz and Ras al Hadd, with the final leg scheduled for July 24.
The Oman Kite Festival builds on the momentum of the 2024 Oman Downwinder and aims to unlock new tourism value in lesser-known regions. It supports domestic travel, encourages local participation, and contributes to Oman's broader tourism strategy under Vision 2040 by integrating sports, nature, and community-driven development.

Khareef spurs entrepreneurial spirit in Salalah

Salalah – Khareef in Dhofar is proving to be more than a seasonal draw for tourists, offering a platform for young Omanis to showcase entrepreneurial ventures and creative projects. Among the most prominent attractions this year is the Nova Carnival taking place in Attin, Salalah till August 31. Launched as part of Dhofar Khareef 2025, the carnival aims to foster youth participation in tourism-linked businesses, encouraging entry into the freelance market. The event combines entertainment with commerce, providing space for small enterprises, family-run initiatives and local food vendors to engage with domestic and international visitors. Weam bint Bakhit al Kathiri, organiser of the carnival, said it offers activities for all age groups. Key attractions include an 8m diameter model of the Moon, an open-air theatre and mobile carts offering different kinds of food. 'It's designed to be accessible and engaging for everyone.' Hamoud bin Ali al Sulaimi, co-founder of the carnival, informed that the idea behind it is to position Dhofar as a year-round tourist destination by integrating Omani and Arab elements into a cohesive visitor experience. 'It's about showcasing Dhofar's evolving identity through homegrown talent and enterprise,' he added. One of the participating entrepreneurs, Ali bin Hassan al Balushi, who runs a stall called 'Qand', described the carnival as a youth-driven initiative. 'Omani youth are leading every aspect of this – from planning to daily operations – which is playing a major role in drawing crowds,' he said. Balushi stressed the importance of institutional backing for such initiatives. 'Financial and logistical support is essential. These youth-led ventures add real value to Dhofar's tourism and economic sectors and deserve sustained attention from relevant authorities.' Such initiatives are increasingly seen as integral to the development of tourism in Dhofar. By creating new experiences and income streams, these contribute to a more diversified and sustainable tourism offering while reinforcing the growing presence of entrepreneurship in Oman's local economy. Youth-led projects like Nova Carnival reflect broader national efforts to empower young Omanis and align with the country's wider development goals, officials said.

Omani guide turns host in iconic mountain village- Misfat al Abriyeen

Al Hamra – Inspired by the natural beauty and cultural richness of Misfat al Abriyeen, Khasib bin Muhail al Hattali, a young Omani from Al Hamra in Dakhliyah Governorate, has transformed his passion for tourism into a promising entrepreneurial venture. Tourists from across the globe visit the historic village year-round, and it was this steady flow of visitors that encouraged Al Hattali to pursue a dream—launching a heritage lodge that blends harmoniously with the local environment. His journey in tourism began in 2010 as a tour guide at the Muscat Diving and Adventure Centre. Over time, he expanded his guiding activities to cover key tourist sites across the Sultanate, focusing particularly on Misfat al Abriyeen. His deep connection to the village inspired the idea of developing a tourism project that would reflect its charm. Determined to find a location that captures the essence of Misfat al Abriyeen, Al Hattali selected a site nestled among palm groves and overlooking traditional mud-brick houses that give the village its distinct architectural identity. The result is the 'Rogan Guest House,' which opened earlier this year. Despite facing challenges, Al Hattali remained committed to realising his vision. He told the Oman News Agency that the Rogan Guest House is not just a place to stay—it is an experience that aligns with the village's atmosphere, heritage, and serene landscape. He is currently working to develop the lodge further to accommodate the growing interest from both domestic and international tourists. Misfat al Abriyeen is celebrated for its blend of heritage and adventure tourism, featuring historic sites, traditional lodgings, and modern cafés that cater to visitors. In recognition of its appeal, the village was included in the World Tourism Organization's list of the most beautiful tourist villages in 2021 during its General Assembly in Madrid. Al Hattali's initiative highlights the growing role of Omani youth in supporting the national tourism sector and turning local assets into sustainable opportunities aligned with Oman Vision 2040.

Al Manakher: A hidden gem in the heart of Jabal Akhdar

Jabal Akhdar : Tucked away in the eastern heights of Jabal Akhdar in Oman's Dakhliyah Governorate lies the picturesque village of Al Manakher, a destination celebrated for its breathtaking natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant agricultural life. Often the first village to greet the morning sun, Al Manakher is also the first stop for travelers ascending Jabal Akhdar from the Birkat al Mouz route. Surrounded by wild flora and perennial trees like atam , but , al-'alan , and shahs , the village offers a scenic haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. The locals sustain themselves through the cultivation of pomegranates, peaches, apricots, olives, and walnuts, along with livestock farming—activities that provide both sustenance and income. The lush agricultural trails that wind through the village add an element of exploration, offering visitors an immersive experience in a traditional Omani mountain lifestyle. Historical and cultural treasures abound, with seven mosques including the beautifully designed Al Bilad Mosque , and heritage landmarks like the restored Ghaba Tower and Matrah Bokbir , the largest seasonal waterfall in the area. These elements speak to the village's deeply rooted cultural and religious identity. According to Ahmed bin Hamad al Nabhani, Municipal Council member for Jabal Akhdar, Al Manakher is also well connected to nearby wilayats via several mountain roads, making it a strategic hub for hiking and eco-tourism. The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has placed signposts along these routes to encourage responsible exploration and highlight the region's historical significance. Mahmoud bin Salem al Tubi, a local resident, emphasized the village's appeal as a sustainable tourism destination, especially during fruit harvest seasons and rose blooming periods. The presence of numerous springs and aflaj—such as Falaj al Manakher , Biban Spring , and Rummanah Dam —not only supports agriculture but adds to the village's natural charm. Al Manakher stands as a symbol of rural resilience and cultural richness, offering a unique experience that blends heritage, adventure, and natural splendor in one unforgettable setting.
