No love lost as Rangers say they will not give Celtic a guard of honour
(Reuters) - Rangers will not give arch rivals Celtic a guard of honour when the Scottish champions visit Ibrox Stadium for Sunday's Premiership match, interim boss Barry Ferguson has said, keeping the fierce rivalry very much alive.
Celtic clinched a 13th Scottish Premiership title in 14 seasons last weekend when Brendan Rodgers's side took an unassailable lead with four games to spare.
Celtic also drew level with Rangers on 55 Scottish league titles each, a feat that will sting the blue half of Glasgow ahead of the Old Firm Derby.
"It (guard of honour) has never happened in the past and there's been this huge clamour about it," Ferguson told Sky Sports. "If I put myself in the shoes of a champion, it wouldn't really bother me.
"I think if you ask any of the Celtic players, I don't think it would bother them either. It's always been that way. Let's just continue that way."
It was the same case when Steven Gerrard's Rangers clinched their 55th title in the 2020-21 season, with Celtic's then-interim boss John Kennedy saying they would not even clap their rivals who denied them a 10th straight title.
"But one thing I will do is I will shake Brendan's hand and say, 'Well done for being so dominant,' as there's no doubt that's been the case this year and that's got to hurt," Ferguson added.
"It certainly hurts me and the staff and it's got to hurt the players as well."
Celtic's manager was relaxed either way about a guard of honour.
"It's not in the rules that you have to do it. I think that when two clubs and the rivalry's so emotional, it's always difficult for the team that comes up short," said Rodgers, who has won four Premiership titles with Celtic in two stints.
"I always think if you're a champion or not a champion, showing that humility to the other team, whatever the rivalry is, it's a mark of respect.
"Celtic-Rangers is an emotional rivalry and if you come up short quite a lot then it can be a challenge for you and to justify that with your supporters. But, as I said, I'm a traditionalist."
England, however, will stick with tradition.
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca confirmed on Friday that his side would give newly-crowned Premier League champions Liverpool a guard of honour at Stamford Bridge when they meet on Sunday.

Newcastle boss Howe confident Isak will stay despite transfer talk - World
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe insisted Saturday that Alexander Isak is still a Newcastle player despite speculation around a move to either Premier League champions Liverpool or Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia. Isak has not travelled with Newcastle for their pre-season tour of Asia, apparently because of a minor thigh injury, but Howe said the 25-year-old Swedish striker was a key part of his plans. "Of course, there are always going to be things going on behind the scenes," Howe told reporters in Singapore, where Newcastle play Arsenal on Sunday. "He is aware he's in the news every day, which I'm sure is not easy for anyone in that situation. "Conversations between Alex and the club or with me will stay private for obvious reasons. We do share a good relationship," Howe added. Isak, who scored 23 Premier League goals last season, has been "magnificent for us for as long as he has been with us," said Howe. "And he is very comfortable in the dressing room." Isak did not travel with the Magpies after the thigh injury kept him out of Newcastle's friendly defeat to Celtic last week. "He mentioned before the Celtic game that it would be very minimal and nothing too serious," said Howe. "But he left training very early and didn't feel right. So, he's now back in Newcastle getting that injury assessed." Howe remained confident that Isak will be wearing black and white when the new season kicks off next month. "I said after the game against Celtic that I was confident he would stay. I don't see anything that is going to change that opinion of mine at the moment. "It's football," he added. "And who knows what the future may bring." The Magpies ended their 70-year trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup and finished in fifth place in the Premier League last season to secure a return to the Champions League. "I think once you've experienced that feeling of winning, you want it again. So, we want to do it again as soon as possible, in all the competitions we are in," said Howe. "We set the bar very high, and there's a lot of ambition within the team." Brighton forward Evan Ferguson joins Roma on loan - World
Brighton and Ireland forward Evan Ferguson has joined Serie A side Roma on a season-long loan, the clubs announced on Wednesday. Ferguson, 20, burst onto the scene as a teenager, scoring 10 goals for Premier League club Brighton and making his international debut in the 2022/23 season. He scored a hat-trick against Newcastle as an 18-year-old but his career has stalled due to loss of form and injury. In total he has made 80 appearances for Brighton, scoring 17 goals, but has scored just one goal at club level since November 2023. Ferguson spent the second half of the last campaign on loan with West Ham, where he made eight appearances, failing to score a goal. "AS Roma are delighted to announce the signing of Evan Ferguson from Brighton and Hove Albion," said the Serie A club. "Ferguson will join Roma on loan with an option to buy." Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler said: "Evan had a challenging period across the past season and a half, and it has been one disrupted by niggling injury issues, which hasn't allowed him a run of games. "He is over those injuries and has come back in great shape. Now he really wants to play regularly. This is an exciting opportunity in a strong league and with the prospect of European football."
