
Nidec builds made-in-China EV motor to help Toyota catch rivals
About 99% of the materials and parts in the E-axle motor are from China, said Nidec president Kishida. Building the integrated motor was "incredibly tough,' he said in an interview last week.
Nidec began supplying the motor for Toyota's electric bZ3X sport utility vehicle, which went on sale in March from about 110,000 yuan ($15,350), and has sold about 20,000 units so far, according to a Toyota spokesperson. The car — the first Toyota vehicle to use this motor — is part of the company's push to turn around its fate in the world's No. 2 economy, as Chinese carmakers capture market share from global rivals.
Using mostly Chinese parts allows the company to cut costs and helps reduce the price of the final car, which is necessary to compete in the Asian nation's ultra-competitive auto market.
The new motor is also aimed at reviving the fortunes of fellow Japanese company Nidec, whose poor profitability and falling stock price are fueling investor discontent.
Over the past five decades, the precision-motor manufacturer had sought growth through acquisitions, buying 75 companies and running about 250 factories, said Kishida, who earlier this year announced a restructure after taking the top job in 2024.
"Before we seek large growth in revenue we have to get our current business under control and get a more efficient structure,' he said at the opening of a new factory in Qingdao, northern China. The plant — which makes motors, compressors and electronics for home appliances — is an example of that, combining two older facilities from different business units in a new $100 million manufacturing hub.
That restructuring may include selling some businesses, Kishida said, adding this would improve the image of the company for shareholders and hopefully boost the stock price.
The Qingdao investment is a rare example of a Japanese company adding substantially to its presence in China, at a time when many others are cutting back as the nation's economic growth slows and global trade tensions rise. Net new Japanese investment into China was up about 3% in the first five months of this year, after rising about 6% last year, according to data from Japan's Finance Ministry.
Toyota is another firm bucking that trend, announcing a new factory in Shanghai for its Lexus brand in April, with that investment reported at around $2 billion. Kishida expressed confidence Nidec could also cooperate on that project, noting the company already supplies various other car parts to Toyota.

Use of deceased's person's savings for cremation allowed without heirs' consent
The government has notified municipalities and financial institutions that they are now allowed to use the savings of deceased people to cover burial or cremation fees without their heirs' consent, sources said. This is aimed at reducing the financial burden on municipalities, which have shouldered burial or cremation costs when a deceased person's savings deposits could not be used. The measure comes as the number of people dying alone increases. Reflecting lifestyle changes and other circumstances, the proportion of single-person households in Japan rose from 25.6% in 1995 to 38.0% in 2020. Among elderly people age 65 and over, the share of such households jumped from 5.0% to 12.1%. Over 105,000 people died with no one to take care of their remains between April 2018 and October 2021, according to the internal affairs ministry. Under the current law, burial or cremation costs for people who die alone will be paid using their savings deposits, and any shortfalls will be covered by municipalities. However, whether the deceased person's deposits could be used has depended on coordination between municipalities and financial institutions. Municipalities have been denied access to savings accounts in some cases because there were no heirs, and they were required to submit various documents in other cases. In light of this situation, the welfare ministry has revised the guidelines for handling money left by people who died alone, including a new document format for municipalities to submit to financial institutions. The revised guidelines also state that the heirs' consent is not necessary to withdraw the deceased's deposits to pay burial or cremation fees. The central government has been considering this issue since 34 local governments asked for a clarification of related rules in 2024 as part of decentralization reform.

Japan, U.S. ministers reached trade agreement in mid-June: sources

Over the following month, Japan focused on convincing U.S. President Donald Trump through Lutnick of the advantages of the agreement, with the proposal of expanding imports of U.S.-grown rice used as the final bargaining chip. The trade deal, announced by Trump on July 23, includes tariffs on Japanese cars set at 15 percent -- lower than the 27.5 percent that was to have been levied -- in exchange for $550 billion of Japanese investment in the United States. During the course of the negotiations, which spanned around three months from mid-April, Japan identified Lutnick as the only person who could communicate "directly and on a deep level" with Trump due to their close friendship of over 30 years, and directed its efforts on him, according to one of the sources. Ryosei Akazawa, Japan's chief tariff negotiator, built trust with Lutnick not only through in-person talks but also through dozens of phone calls, the source said. Believing that Lutnick placed a high priority on economic security amid China concerns, Japan emphasized its willingness to contribute to strengthening U.S. domestic supply chains and eventually reached an understanding with him. Trump, however, maintained a hardline stance even in late June, venting frustration that Japan does not import significant amounts of American cars and rice. "I'm not sure we're going to make a deal. I doubt it," he had said, while demanding additional concessions in exchange for lowering tariffs. The tide turned on July 22 immediately following Japan's upper house election. A sudden meeting was arranged for the following day between Trump and Akazawa, who was in Washington for an eighth round of talks. Akazawa and Lutnick began to "rehearse" in preparation for the talks, with Lutnick suggesting that a total investment of $400 billion be proposed in the expectation that Trump would ask for $500 billion. A board was prepared by U.S. officials to clearly show Trump how much Japan would investment. But Trump demanded even more, leaving Akazawa no choice but to agree to $550 billion. A senior official of the prime minister's office acknowledged that the deal does not align with World Trade Organization rules or the Japan-U.S. trade agreement that took effect in January 2020, but also conceded that Trump "is a president who genuinely believes in protecting his country through tariffs." © KYODO
