Nothing beats donning the Malaysia jersey for Irazabal

The Star2 days ago

PETALING JAYA: Jon Irazabal has worn many jerseys in his career but none feel quite like the one he's donning now, the black and yellow of the Malaysian football team.
The 28-year-old defender, who plies his trade with an Azerbaijani club Sabah, has now embraced his Malaysian roots fully by joining the Harimau Malaya set-up for the 2027 Asian Cup third-round qualifiers.
And for Irazabal, the call-up is more than just a footballing milestone, it's personal.
'I am proud of my Malaysian heritage,' said Irazabal, whose grandfather is from Malaysia.
'The opportunity I have with the national team is amazing. The aim is to support the people and the country by putting up strong performances in the qualifiers.'
The Spanish-born centreback, who qualifies through his Malaysian lineage, didn't hesitate when the national team came calling.
'Since I was contacted, it was an easy decision. Playing at this level, especially in the qualifiers, is a big experience and one I couldn't pass up.'
Malaysia's football scene has grown steadily in stature and it hasn't gone unnoticed by Irazabal.
'The motivation is the fans -people who are a little bit crazy about the game,' he smiled. 'You can see it all over social media and you feel it in the stadiums. The atmosphere is excellent. The football culture here reminds me a lot of Spain—passionate, proud, and loud.'
Irazabal joined the national squad right after finishing his club season with Sabah, wasting no time in linking up with coach Peter Cklamovski's team.
'It was quick. I finished the season and immediately joined the national team. Some of us came in after training had already begun, so it was a short period of adapting. But day by day, we're improving.'
Known for his imposing presence at the back, Irazabal isn't just here to win headers, he wants to play his part in executing the coach's tactical vision.
'Yes, my height helps in aerial duels, but I know I can contribute more than that. I'm trying to integrate my game into the coach's philosophy, and I'm ready to take on this challenge.'

New JDT coach Munoz gets cracking early by delving into role

Smile of confidence: JDT will be Munoz's first venture outside Europe but he appears unfazed by the shift. PETALING JAYA: Johor Darul Ta'zim's (JDT) new head coach Xisco Munoz is already deep into preparations ahead of the club's pre-season, and his approach is rooted in adaptability, learning, and building from the ground up. In an interview with Spanish coaching platform Coach Football Club, the 44-year-old Spaniard offered a rare glimpse into his coaching philosophy, emphasising the importance of understanding the local football landscape before implementing ideas on the pitch. 'Pre-season, the first thing we do is study the league,' said Munoz. 'Because what you do in England does not work in Spain, or anywhere else in the world.' 'You're working in nations where the timing, conditions, and even team mentalities are different. You cannot apply the same tactical situations with every team. Every context demands its own strategy.' Munoz, a former Watford manager, views pre-season as a period to instil structure and progression. His method involves building a tactical identity from the fundamentals - especially in defence - before evolving the team's playing style. 'Take defence for example. You start with a low block. Once that's mastered, you gradually progress to a high line. If you understand how to defend deep, you can adapt and advance into any zone,' he explained. 'Only then do you begin introducing pressing strategies and your personal philosophy of how the team should play.' Munoz's managerial career has taken him across Europe – from leading Dinamo Tbilisi to the Georgian league title in 2020, to earning promotion to the English Premier League with Watford in 2021. He has also helmed clubs in Spain (Huesca), Cyprus (Anorthosis Famagusta), and most recently, Slovakia (Dunajska Streda). JDT will be his first venture outside Europe, but Munoz appears unfazed by the shift, especially with a familiar support system already in place as JDT have a number of Spanish players and coaches in the team. Known for his intense, modern approach to football and commitment to detail, Munoz's arrival signals a new chapter for JDT – one that promises tactical evolution, international pedigree, and a clear blueprint rooted in studying and mastering the Malaysian game.

Cklamovski hails Harimau Malaya's commitment in 4-0 win

Harimau Malaya The national football team walked away winners for the first time in 11 years against Vietnam after beating them 4-0 in the second 2027 Asian Cup Group F qualifying match at Bukit Jalil National Stadium here tonight. Sporting a lineup of new heritage players, Peter Cklamovski's still had to spend the first half trying to get on the same wavelength and struggled to find gaps in Vietnam's defence. Their aggressive play did nearly result in a goal in the 35th minute when Dion Cools sent a blistering shot from outside the penalty box that unfortunately hit the right goalpost. The Harimau Malaya squad managed to get into gear in the second half, and new heritage player Joao Figueiredo scored in the 49th minute when his shot deflected off Vietnamese keeper Nguyen Filip into the net to make it 1-0 in favour of the hosts. Fellow heritage player Rodrigo Holgado kept the momentum up and scored from inside the penalty box 10 minutes later, and the Malaysians, sensing that the match had truly shifted in their favour, continued to press their opponents and were rewarded with a 67th minute goal by Corbin Ong. Finally, Cools made up for his missed shot at goal in the first half with a header in the 89th minute, capping a truly amazing performance for the team. The 4-0 victory means that Malaysia has taken the lead in Group F with six points, while Vietnam is now second with three points. Laos is third, also with three points, courtesy of their 2-1 win over Nepal in the other Group F qualifer in Laos and Nepal is last with no points. Malaysia will travel to Laos on Oct 9 for their third Group F match.

Rexy wants to see Man-Tee become hardy boys

PETALING JAYA: More help will be given to make national men's doubles pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun hardy. While happy with the rapid progress shown by Wei Chong-Kai Wun, national doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky said the Malaysian duo could have reached the Indonesian Open semi-finals if not for falling victim to crowd intimidation at Istora Senayan in Jakarta last week. World No. 7 Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun played amidst boos and jeers en route to losing 18-21, 21-12, 18-21 in the last four against world No. 8 homesters Sabar Gutama-Moh Reza. Rexy said the jeers had affected Wei Chong-Kai Wun although they had been in the same situation at the same stage last year. Last year, they defeated Sabar-Moh in the semis to reach the Indonesian Open final. 'I spoke to Wei Chong-Kai Wun and they admitted that they were affected by the jeers,' said Rexy. 'We cannot do anything about the fans as this is part of sports. This type of incident happens in football matches too. 'Our players need to be mentally tougher when they take on Indonesian players in Istora. We have to help our players handle this.'
