Special counsel to question Marine investigator as witness
Col. Park Jung-hun will appear at the special counsel's office in the afternoon to be questioned about the allegations that top military officials and the presidential office intervened in his initial probe of the death of Cpl. Chae Su-geun, who died while searching for torrential rain victims in July 2023.
Lee's team has been investigating former President Yoon Suk Yeol on charges of pressuring then Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup to change the results of Park's investigation.
Park was indicted on insubordination charges after rejecting the pressure from above but was acquitted by a district court early this year. He was recently reinstated to his previous position. (Yonhap)

Lee, Kazakh president hold phone talks, discuss bilateral cooperation
President Lee Jae Myung held phone talks Wednesday with Kazakhstan's president and discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation, Lee's office said. During the call, Lee expressed gratitude to Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev for sending a congratulatory message on the launch of his administration, presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said in a written briefing. The two leaders agreed to expand cooperation in areas such as infrastructure and critical minerals, Kang said. Lee also voiced hope that the two countries' strategic partnership, established in 2009, will continue to grow stronger. In particular, he thanked Tokayev for his active support for the repatriation of the remains of Gen. Hong Beom-do, a historic South Korean independence fighter against Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule of Korea. Hong led Korean independence forces to major victories against Japanese troops in 1920. He moved to the Soviet Union the following year to escape Japanese persecution, and in 1937 was forcibly relocated to present-day Kazakhstan under Soviet leader Joseph Stalin's deportation policy targeting ethnic Koreans. He died in Kazakhstan's Kyzylorda region in 1943, two years before Korea regained independence. His remains were repatriated to South Korea in 2021. Lee also called for continued interest and support for South Korean companies operating in Kazakhstan, the office said. (Yonhap)

Trump says Philippines will pay 19% 'reciprocal' tariffs
US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the Philippines will pay 19 percent tariffs, a percentage point lower than what was previously announced, noting that the Southeast Asian nation will open its market to the United States. In a social media post, Trump said that his administration reached a trade deal with the Philippines, after he held a meeting with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at the White House. "We concluded our Trade Deal, whereby The Philippines is going OPEN MARKET with the United States, and ZERO Tariffs. The Philippines will pay a 19% Tariff," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "In addition, we will work together Militarily. It was a Great Honor to be with the President. He is Highly Respected in his Country, as he should be. He is also a very good, and tough, negotiator. We extend our warmest regards to the wonderful people of The Philippines!" The deal comes as South Korea and other countries are striving to strike trade deals with the US before Aug. 1, when Trump's "reciprocal" tariffs, including 25 percent duties on South Korea, are set to take effect.
