History behind Oakmont Country Club ahead of U.S. Open

CBS News21 hours ago

The story of golf could not be told without the Oakmont Country Club.
For a record-setting 10th time, the golf course is hosting the U.S. Open. It's challenged the best in the world for more than 100 years and will host this year's U.S. Open from June 12-15.
"The best of the best tend to win here, and sometimes the best of the best have their hearts broken here," Oakmont Country Club historian David Moore said.
Since 1903, the Oakmont Country Club has rewarded the perfect shot and punished mistakes. Arguably, one of the toughest spots is the iconic church pews. According to Moore, they've changed names and designs. They got their name during the 1960s from a newspaper writer.
"When he said if you hit it into these church pew-like bunkers, only divine intervention can help you save par, and the name has stuck ever since," Moore said at the Oakmont Country Club.
As for the name of the club, it can be a bit misleading. More than 90% of it is in Plum Borough.
"Oakmont was named after the town in which the train station was in, and that's why it's not Plum Country Club," Moore said.
However, its place in golf history can't be questioned. It has hosted the U.S. Open more than any other course, with its first one in 1927. The club has hosted one every decade, except the 1940s, since then.
"Between Johnny Miller's 63, Jack [Nicklaus] and [Arnold Palmer] in '62 and Ben Hogan's fourth and final victory in 1953," Moore said.
From winning birdies to missed putts and clutch drives, hole 18 may have created the most emotional history.
"Eighteen has just been instrumental in crowning or breaking hearts over the last 120 years here," Moore said.
Next week, a new chapter will be written.

Rory McIlroy's new driver brings about concern as he shoots second-highest PGA Tour score before U.S. Open

Rory McIlroy might have some serious driver troubles heading into next week's U.S. Open. The 2025 Masters winner missed the cut by 12 strokes at the RBC Canadian Open, shooting an 8-over 78 on Friday, which was his second-highest score in any PGA Tour event for his career. The last time McIlroy shot a 78 was in the first round of The Open in 2024. McIlroy said his round "concerns me," and what professional golfer wouldn't be worried after carding a quadruple bogey as well as one double bogey and four bogeys to go with just two birdies. "You don't want to shoot high scores like the one I did today," McIlroy said, per ESPN. "Still, I felt like I came here obviously with a new driver thinking that that sort of was going to be good and solve some of the problems off the tee, but it didn't." McIlroy's driver has been a point of emphasis since the PGA Championship last month, where it was leaked that he had a nonconforming driver that was unusable after pre-tournament testing. Scottie Scheffler, the winner at Quail Hollow Club that week, also had a nonconforming driver, but his name wasn't publicly known. However, McIlroy was ticked off his name got out there, and he skipped media sessions the entire tournament. He went on to finish T-47th. Before teeing off this week in Toronto, McIlroy admitted being upset that his driver conundrum had been made public. "I was a little p----d off because I knew that Scottie's driver had failed on Monday, but my name was the one that was leaked," McIlroy said in a press conference, via The New York Post. "It was supposed to stay confidential. Two members of the media were the ones that leaked it. "I didn't want to get up there and say something that I regretted either, because I'm trying to protect Scottie. I don't want to mention his name. I'm trying to protect TaylorMade, I'm trying to protect the USGA, PGA of America, myself." So, McIlroy's tee shots were going to be under a microscope this week because he would be working with a new driver, and it wasn't as consistent as it usually is. McIlroy is one of the best drivers on tour, currently ranking first in strokes gained off the tee, while being third in driving distance with an average shot of 319.3 yards. But with the rough at Oakmont Country Club having the ability to swallow golf balls and ruin rounds next week at the U.S. Open, McIlroy's accuracy needs to be much better than it has been. He ranks 170th in driving accuracy, hitting the fairway 51.13% of the time. At least being cut from this week's tournament gives McIlroy a couple more days to figure out his driver before teeing it up at the U.S. Open on Thursday. Maddox Mihalakis delivers clutch single and Arizona defeats North Carolina 10-8 to force Game 3

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Maddox Mihalakis drove in three runs, including two with a go-ahead single in the seventh inning, and Arizona defeated North Carolina 10-8 on Saturday, forcing a deciding game in the Chapel Hill Super Regional. Game 3 is Sunday. The Wildcats trailed 8-6 in the seventh inning but rallied with four runs. With two on and one out, Brendan Summerhill doubled down the left field line to score one run while Easton Breyfogle advanced to third. Breyfogle then scored on a wild pitch by Walter McDuffie to tie the score. After a couple of walks loaded the bases, Mihalakis drove in two with a single to right field off of Folger Boaz. Tony Pluta (3-0) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings for the win. McDuffie (3-2) took the loss. The Tar Heels trailed 6-4 in the top of the seventh before scoring four runs to take the lead. Tyson Bass hit a three-run home run and Jackson Van De Brake drew a bases-loaded walk. Tommy Splaine hit a two-run home run for Arizona. North Carolina (46-14) is playing in a super regional for the 12th time, having advanced eight times previously. Knicks will seek permission to speak with Mavs' Jason Kidd as coaching search kicks into high gear: reports

The New York Knicks' head coaching search appears to be in full swing. After making the surprising decision to part ways with Tom Thibodeau, the Knicks are now eyeing Jason Kidd as a potential candidate to replace the franchise's fourth-winningest coach. According to ESPN, the Knicks are actively vetting Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd. Since Kidd is under contract with the Mavs, the Knicks would have to submit a formal request to speak to the Dallas coach. The Knicks have yet to request permission to interview Kidd, sources told ESPN. Exploring a trade could also be a route the Knicks could take. But the Knicks did exhaust a considerable amount of draft capital to acquire forward Mikal Bridges. Kidd reportedly interviewed with the Knicks in 2020, but Thibodeau got the job. Thibodeau led the Knicks to their first Eastern Conference finals berth since 2000. The Indiana Pacers eliminated New York in six games. Kidd spent the final season of his lengthy NBA career with the Knicks. Prior to taking the Mavs' head coaching job, Kidd had coaching stints with the Nets and the Bucks. He also served as an assistant coach for the Lakers from 2019-21. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
