How does your brain know something is real?
'We are as much creating our perception of reality as we are perceiving it,' she explains.
Rather than rudely asking her to perform a battery of tests to prove she exists, I trust my eyes and ears. It's an efficient way to live. While neuroscientists might argue the details, most agree that perception—essentially, how we process sensory information to create a coherent experience—involves the active construction of a reality, as opposed to the passive reception of the world around us.
For instance, when you see a busy road, you're actively creating that reality, combining information from your senses (the sights and sounds of whooshing cars ) with past experiences (knowing you've walked along this popular boulevard before). Quickly understanding that the automobiles speeding down the street are real helps keep you safe.
This model for experiencing reality is efficient, but not foolproof: Sometimes our brain still gets things wrong. That dissonance is something Dijkstra, who works as the principal investigator at the Imagine Reality Lab at University College London, examines in her latest study, recently published in Neuron.
Much of Dijkstra's work is inspired by the groundbreaking psychologist Mary Cheves West Perky. In a seminal 1910 paper on imagination and perception, Perky asked subjects to visualize objects—a red tomato, a green leaf, etc.—on a blank wall. Secretly, in that seemingly empty space, Perky projected barely visible images of those same objects on the wall.
The subjects were none the wiser, attributing the perceived objects to their imaginations instead of the projections. It appeared, Perky mused, that 'the image of imagination must have much in common with the perception of everyday life.'
More than a century later, many researchers concur, believing that imagination and perception work together to create our sense of reality. But how does our brain know what's real and what's not? Dijkstra's new research may have the answer.
'We expected the results to be more complicated and nuanced,' says Dijkstra.
Instead, brain activity measured by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans told Dijkstra a clear story: the level of activity in the fusiform gyrus could predict whether or not someone believed an image was real. The region, located on both sides of the brain behind the temples, plays an important role in recognizing faces and objects, but its ability to potentially sort out real from fake is something neuroscientists weren't aware of before.
The study was a modern twist on Perky's experiment. Instead of projecting fruit and other objects on a wall, Dijkstra and her colleagues asked participants to imagine sets of diagonal lines on a screen. Those lines were then projected into the fMRI machine via a mirror. (Using simple shapes, like diagonal lines, made it easier to predict what subjects might visualize. Ask people to imagine a leaf, and they might envision a plethora of shapes and colors.) The diagonal lines were displayed against a noisy background—think TV static—to make it more difficult to distinguish reality from imagination.
When someone saw real projected lines, activity in the fusiform gyrus was stronger than when they knew they were simply imagining the diagonal lines. At the front of the brain, the anterior insula of the prefrontal cortex, which acts as a kind of hub between brain networks, also showed increased activity when participants saw the projected lines.
However, when someone confused imagined lines for real ones, essentially having a mild hallucination, both the fusiform gyrus and anterior insula regions lit up—as if they'd seen the real thing.
These results led Dijkstra and her team to conclude that imagined and perceived signals combine to create a 'reality signal.' If strong enough, that signal crosses a 'reality threshold' and we accept what we perceive as an objective reality.
While she believes activity in the fusiform gyrus determines whether something passes the reality threshold, Dijkstra said her research was in its early stages. It could be 'the other way around,' she notes, with activity in the prefrontal cortex deciding 'whether something is real or not based on some other signal' and then feeding that 'back to the fusiform gyrus to boost your experience or make things feel more vivid.'
How the reality threshold is passed matters. Proving a causal link between activity in the fusiform gyrus and hallucinations, for example, might allow medical practitioners in the future to stimulate that part of the brain to treat symptoms of schizophrenia and other brain disorders.
Not only can this research shed light on why humans see things that don't exist, but it can also explain why we sometimes don't believe our eyes. When she first moved to London from the Netherlands, Dijkstra saw a creature in the distance while walking in her neighborhood. She assumed it was a dog, even though it was wandering alone. 'I was really surprised. I was like, 'Where's the owner?' I really saw a dog.' If she had turned away and not questioned her reality, she might not have realized what she was actually seeing was a fox, one of the 10,000 or so that called her new city home. Dijkstra perceived something that didn't match her past experiences and, for a moment, saw something that didn't exist.
As for the future of her research, there are so many unanswered questions about perception, says Dijkstra, such as whether people with vivid imaginations are more likely to hallucinate. In this field, it's important to consistently challenge what you believe is real. 'You can have this really cool idea that makes a lot of sense and it seems to be explaining so many things, and then it turns out to be totally wrong,' she says. 'And that's OK, we still make progress.'

Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams made news as 'stuck' crew of Starliner. Now, he's retiring
Astronaut Butch Wilmore's venture to space aboard the ill-fated Boeing Starliner spacecraft appears to be his last – at least with NASA. NASA has announced that Wilmore is retiring from the U.S. space agency a little more than a year since he and astronaut Suni Williams set out for the International Space Station for what was meant to be a brief orbital stay. Selected for the Starliner's first crewed test flight, Wilmore and Williams were thrust into the worldwide spotlight after the troubled mission stretched on for months due to issues with the spacecraft. Now, after returning to Earth in March, Wilmore is hanging up the spacesuit, NASA announced in an Aug. 6 press release. Of course, retiring from NASA doesn't always mean the end of an astronaut's space traveling days. Peggy Whitson, 65, has famously returned to space on two ventures with a private company known as Axiom Space after her retirement from NASA in 2018. What's next for Wilmore remains to be seen. In the meantime, here's everything to know about the experienced spacefarer, as well as his part in the Starliner saga. Who is Butch Wilmore? Wilmore, 62, is a Tennessee native first selected as a NASA astronaut in 2000. Prior to joining NASA, Wilmore, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School, served as U.S. Navy captain and test pilot who flew on numerous combat missions. Wilmore flew on three spaceflights during his 25 years at NASA, which included being a passenger on four different spacecraft and accumulating 464 days in space. NASA announces Butch Wilmore's retirement as astronaut In announcing Wilmore's retirement, Steve Koerner, the acting head of NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, said the astronaut's "commitment to NASA's mission and dedication to human space exploration is truly exemplary." 'His lasting legacy of fortitude will continue to impact and inspire the Johnson workforce, future explorers, and the nation for generations," Koerner said in a statement. Wilmore said in his own statement that he has been "captivated by the marvels of creation" since he was young, "looking upward with an insatiable curiosity." "This curiosity propelled me into the skies, and eventually to space, where the magnificence of the cosmos mirrored the glory of its creator in ways words can scarcely convey,' Wilmore said in the statement. 'Even as I ventured beyond Earth's limits, I remained attuned to the beauty and significance of the world below, recognizing the same intricate design evident among the stars is also woven into the fabric of life at home.' Wilmore crewed Boeing Starliner with astronaut Suni Williams Wilmore's retirement announcement comes less than five months after he returned from the International Space Station following an unexpectedly lengthy stay. Wilmore, along with NASA astronaut Suni Williams, were the two selected to crew the inaugural human flight of the Boeing Starliner in 2024. Wilmore and Williams launched June 5, 2024, on a mission to test a vehicle intended to one day join the SpaceX Dragon in transporting NASA astronauts to orbit. The Starliner capsule rode to orbit atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket from NASA's Kennedy Space Center near Cape Canaveral, Florida. Wilmore and Williams reached the International Space Station the next day, June 6, 2024, where they were expected to remain for about 10 days before returning home. Instead, the two astronauts quickly became fixtures of the news cycle for months when the vehicle that sent them to the space station encountered a series of technical failures. Wilmore and Williams repeatedly pushed back against the notion that they were "stuck" in space – a claim most prominently put forward by President Donald Trump. Instead, the astronauts insisted that they were prepared and trained for a long duration mission, a situation they understood was possible when flying on a test spacecraft like Starliner. During their 286 days at the orbital laboratory, Wilmore and Williams helped conduct scientific research and perform routine station maintenance. The pair also completed a spacewalk together in January that led to Williams setting a record among women astronauts. What happened with the Boeing Starliner mission? When the Starliner made it to the space station, engineers discovered a slew of helium leaks and problems with the craft's propulsion system that for months hampered Starliner's return to Earth. Williams and Wimore's fate remained uncertain for months as NASA and Boeing deliberated on how best to get them home. But NASA and Boeing ultimately decided that the troubled Starliner capsule wasn't safe enough to crew and would instead return to Earth without them. That happened Sept. 6 when the empty Boeing Starliner undocked and made its way back to Earth for a parachute-assisted landing in the New Mexico desert. On Sept. 28, 2024, NASA launched the SpaceX Crew-9 mission as planned, but with one crucial change: Instead of four astronauts, just two – Nick Hague of NASA and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov – headed to the space station on a Dragon, leaving two empty seats on their vehicle reserved for Wilmore and Williams. NASA opted to keep Williams and Wilmore at the station a few extra months rather than launch an emergency mission to return them to Earth and leave the station understaffed. Williams and Wilmore eventually departed the space station with the Crew-9 team and safely landed March 17 off the Florida coast a few days after the arrival of the Crew-10 mission. Trump signs order that could ease regulations on SpaceX operations, including in Florida
SpaceX and Elon Musk just notched a significant win with President Donald Trump's latest executive order. Trump on Wednesday, Aug. 13, signed an executive order that eases many federal regulatory restrictions on commercial spaceflight companies in the U.S. Though SpaceX is not mentioned by name in the order, the commercial spaceflight company perhaps stands to gain the most from the move due to its many lucrative government contracts and its active launch cadence. The order also comes more than two months since Trump and Musk had a very public feud over a spending bill that led to a falling-out between the once-close allies – and threats that could have hampered U.S. spaceflight ambitions. Here's everything to know about Trump's commercial spaceflight executive order, as well as SpaceX's long battle with government regulators. Trump signs executive order on commercial rocket launches Trump's order directs the U.S. transportation secretary to eliminate or expedite environmental reviews for launch appovals administered by the Federal Aviation Administration, which licenses commercial rocket launches. The declaration further calls on the secretary to do away with "outdated, redundant or overly restrictive rules for launch and re-entry vehicles," the White House said in a statement provided to Reuters. Trump's order states that it is imperative to increase commercial rocket launches in the U.S. to "ensure that new space-based industries, space exploration capabilities, and cutting-edge defense systems are pioneered in America rather than by our adversaries." Interestingly, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, whose title is referenced several times in the order, was appointed in July as interim administrator of NASA. Following the news, Duffy praised Trump in a post on social media site X calling the order "visionary." "We're launching into the final frontier and this EO makes it possible for the U.S. to lead the world from earth travel to space travel," Duffy said in the post. Order could ease environmental regulations for SpaceX missions The executive order would directly benefit private spaceflight companies like Musk's SpaceX and Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, both of which conduct the bulk of their operations in Texas. But SpaceX, which Musk founded in 2002, likely stands to gain the most from the relaxed regulatory environment. The commercial rocket launch company leads the way in U.S. spaceflight missions by routinely conducting Starlink satellite deployments using its Falcon 9 rocket from both California and Florida. SpaceX's Falcon 9, one of the world's most active rockets, is also the vehicle of choice for NASA when the space agency sends astronauts to the International Space Station. What's more, the SpaceX Crew Dragon Capsule perched atop the rocket is the only U.S. vehicle capable of transporting astronauts to and from the orbital laboratory. SpaceX additionally benefits from billions of dollars in contracts from not only NASA, but the Department of Defense by providing launch services for classified satellites and other payloads. Trump's order comes as SpaceX prepares to launch its massive 400-foot Starship rocket again in August from its Starbase headquarters in South Texas. Musk has also oft-stated his commitment to increasing the cadence of test missions for the spacecraft due to launch before the end of 2026 from Florida. The launch vehicle, regarded as the world's largest and most powerful rocket, is set to serve a pivotal role in future U.S. spaceflight. Starship is the centerpiece of Musk's vision of sending the first humans to Mars, and is also critical in NASA's plans to return astronauts to the moon's surface. Elon Musk, SpaceX have battled regulations for years Trump's executive order is undoubtedly a huge win for Musk, who has spent years pushing back on federal regulations he views as "superfluous." In September 2024, the FAA announced a proposal to hit SpaceX with $633,009 in civil penalties for what the agency claims were failures by the company to follow license requirements ahead of two separate launches in 2023. In response, Musk took to his social media site X to indicate his plans to sue the agency for "regulatory overreach." The FAA has previously said in a statement to the USA TODAY Network that it seeks to balance spaceflight progress with the need to ensure commercial launches are safely conducted. A record 148 FAA-licensed commercial space operations took place in 2024, up by more than 30% from the year prior, the agency has noted. But when it comes to Starship's development, SpaceX has become known for its risk-tolerant philosophy. Musk has stressed that rapid and frequent testing that sometimes leads to explosive ends can still provide data that helps engineers improve the vehicle's design. Environmental groups, others long oppose SpaceX rocket launches That aggressive approach, though, has rankled environmentalists and others who have criticized SpaceX's operations for potentially decimating regional ecosystems. The South Texas Environmental Justice Network, which has long opposed Musk and his space program, most recently issued a statement in May condemning the FAA for approving SpaceX's request to increase its Starship flight tests to 25 a year. In late June, Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum threatened to sue SpaceX if investigators determined that Musk's spaceflight company had contributed to undue pollution and marine life die-off in the country. The announcement came after the fiery mishap earlier in the month caused debris to fall in the Mexican state of Tamaulipa.
