Solar street lights installed on Gerik-Jeli highway, motorists thankful
That was among the reactions from excited members of the public when solar-powered street lights were installed along the East-West Highway (JRTB) Gerik-Jeli route.
In fact, through the comments section on aTikTok video post by @Muhammad Asyraaf, most users were also excited as they frequently use the route, besides praising the Public Works Department (JKR).
TikTok user catalognonaa said: 'Alhamdulillah after this, (I won't) be afraid to return from the kampung to the university. The road is always dark and dangerous (to travel) as well.
'Great, they've installed the lights. Don't forget to do maintenance ya,' reminded @Jai.
'It's really good to install solar lights. No need to go through the trouble of laying cables. Not to mention cables getting stolen,' said another user.
Earlier, Kosmo reported that Perak JKR would install 385 solar-type street lights on the JRTB Gerik-Jeli route this month.
Perak JKR director, Zamri Mat Kasim reportedly said the installation of solar-type street lights was made at the accident location involving a bus carrying 42 Universiti Pendididkan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students with a Proton Alza last month.

RM25 million to light up dark federal roads, prevent accidents
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 2,184 accidents have been recorded on federal roads without street lighting from 2023 up to July this year, the Works Ministry said. Its Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the ministry, through its road safety infrastructure upgrading programme, would install streetlights in areas where accidents have occurred or where roads are considered high-risk due to dark roads. This year, Nanta said, 256 locations along federal roads have been selected for new streetlight installations, involving a total allocation of RM25 million. "For accident-prone or high-risk areas such as intersections, bends and bridges, as well as areas with a record of identified accidents, streetlights will be installed locally, on a small scale, and to meet lighting needs. "The Works Ministry and the Public Works Department will continue to assess the effectiveness of these streetlight installations, especially in accident-prone or high-risk areas, while identifying new locations that require them. "This streetlight installation programme will continue to be implemented so that road safety aspects can always be improved," he said in a written parliamentary reply yesterday. Nanta was responding to a question from Datuk Rosol Wahid (PN–Hulu Terengganu) regarding the number of accidents recorded in areas without streetlights and the government's action to prevent accidents in high-risk areas. Meanwhile, Nanta said pothole repair works are carried out within 24 hours of a complaint being received. He said regular patrols are also conducted to detect road surface damage early and prevent hazards to road users. He added that the ministry remains committed to securing annual allocations for streetlight installations on federal roads that meet the relevant criteria. "The allocation approved by the central agency will be used according to priority, subject to the amount provided," he said.

Ahmad Maslan criticises poor maintenance of Telupid-Sandakan road
SANDAKAN: Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan has voiced strong dissatisfaction over the poor maintenance of the Telupid-Sandakan road, a segment of the Pan Borneo Highway project. He emphasised that contractors are contractually obligated to ensure road usability during construction. 'Under the agreement, they must maintain roads in construction zones properly. The current state is unacceptable and burdens the public,' Ahmad told reporters after inspecting the Naval Region 2 Headquarters jetty project. He shared that his team documented severe road damage in four videos, forwarded to the Works Ministry for review. Three critical stretches have drawn public complaints: Jalan Sandakan Batu 32-Moynod (WP28), Jalan Moynod-Sapi Nangoh (WP29), and Jalan Sapi Nangoh-Sungai Baoto (WP30). Ahmad has directed the Public Works Department to intensify monitoring and issue warnings to non-compliant contractors. The ministry reserves the right to appoint third-party maintenance if contractors fail repairs, deducting costs from their contracts. Road diversion between Bukit Gambir and Tangkak from Aug 5
JOHOR BAHRU: PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) will implement a phased road diversion along KM166.79 to KM168.26 in both directions between the Bukit Gambir and Tangkak interchanges on the North-South Expressway starting August 5. The diversion, announced via a Facebook post, is necessary to facilitate bridge construction works by a Public Works Department contractor and will remain in effect until December 30.
