Labuan Bajo: Here's How To Plan For The Best Trip To This Magical Getaway

Hype Malaysia20-07-2025
A fishing village located on Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara, Labuan Bajo is a hidden gem with tons to explore! If you're looking for a new Asean holiday destination, then Labuan Bajo is a must-add to your list. There are tons of things to do in Labuan Bajo, from snorkelling in search of manta rays to trailing around Komodo National Park to seek out the exotic Komodo dragons. The island is also just a boat ride away from some of the most gorgeous beaches, like the Instagram-worthy Pink Beach.
However, planning the perfect Labuan Bajo trip will take some research. Fret not, because we have just the guide to help you create the best trip itinerary and make the most unforgettable memories. Thanks to AirAsia, we recently had the opportunity to visit Labuan Bajo, so we know a thing or two about the island and what to do. Keep scrolling to learn the best time to visit, the best place to stay and more:
The Best Time To Visit
Let's start with arguably the most important question of them all: when is the best time to visit Labuan Bajo? While you can still fly to the island all year round, the best time to visit, according to the local tour guides, is from March to May and from September to December. This timing means the best weather in Labuan Bajo to visit all the stunning beaches and neighbouring islands.
If you want to see as many Komodo dragons as possible, visiting Labuan Bajo during these two periods will also be great because it's outside of the May to August mating season, leading to more appearances. Unfortunately, given the location of Labuan Bajo, the island is heavily affected by the Lewotobi volcano, and its activity can be unpredictable. However, from our experience, you can still visit Labuan Bajo even after a recent eruption, but practice caution.
How To Get Around Town
Getting around a foreign country can be intimidating, but not if you have a reliable transportation service. Whether you're travelling in groups or going solo, the best way to get around the mainland is by car. During our visit, East Pearl and Komodo Shuttle were our choice of transportation services. Both companies offered safe transportation throughout our stay and even followed our requests for quick stops at convenience stores.
Being in Labuan Bajo means island hopping and visiting the stunning beaches – and for this, you'll need a Phinisi. We were lucky to check into one of Lamain Voyages' overnight cruises during our stay. We were very comfortable on those two days. Despite some unexpected issues due to weather conditions, the team ensured we had a great time. Of course, other cruises operate on the island, and each offers their speciality, so choose one that suits you and your needs the best.
Where To Stay While On The Island
What about accommodation when you're on the mainland? Well, Labuan Bajo is home to several gorgeous resorts from award-winning brands, so there are plenty to choose from. During our visit, we checked into the AYANA Komodo Waecicu Beach Resort and 'heavenly' was the best way to describe our stay. Not only were the rooms comfortable and well-equipped, but the available amenities and facilities ensured that everyone, from young to old, would have a great time.
If you're looking for somewhere more serene and private, with the beach right by your doorstep, then you'll have to check out the Plataran Komodo Resort & Spa. This award-winning island sanctuary offers a limited number of rooms but peak privacy for each guest. Both resorts also offer exclusive Phinisi yacht excursions and private island-hopping services, so you won't need to search far for a separate Phinisi service.
What To Eat During Your Stay
Labuan Bajo is a fishing village, so the best thing to eat while on the island is seafood. You can get the freshest seafood and have it ready right as the fishermen catch it. One of the local eateries that we visited during our stay was Rumah Makan Kellan Eat First. Loved by locals and foreigners, this unassuming restaurant serves a delicious variety of dishes, including seafood and poultry.
Many restaurants in Labuan Bajo offer dishes made using East Nusa Tenggara's specialities. La Moringa is one of those restaurants offering dishes and drinks featuring the mighty Moringa leaf. Another must-try on the menu is the Indonesian smoked beef, se'i sapi, which would satisfy the meat lovers. We got to try the dish, served alongside the green-tinted moringa rice and the matcha-like Moringa Latte.
Traveling To Labuan Bajo
Now that you've learnt the best time and how to get around when in Labuan Bajo, one question remains: how do you get there? Well, travelling to Labuan Bajo from Malaysia has never been easier, thanks to AirAsia! Trump visit will cause traffic jam from hell, reckons home-grown stand-up comedian Jason Leong

US President Donald Trump's decision to visit during the ASEAN Summit in October appears to be a feather in Malaysia's diplomatic cap. However, not all Malaysians are so enamoured with the visit of the former TV reality star. One such citizen is well-known stand-up comedian Dr Jason Leong who opined that all roads leading to Kuala Lumpur, including byways, highways and even the small loose bitumen trail leading to your mother's house – will be closed. For a month as well before and after Trump's much ballyhooed visit, projected Leong who gave up his career as a doctor to focus on being a full-time stand-up comedian in 2014. The 40-year-old comic was obviously poking fun at the security measures that will be undertaken to ensure the safety of The Don while he's here. Leong foresees Trumps visit to KL would bring the entire capital city which is often gridlocked anyway to a complete and utter standstill. The post has already generated 1.2K likes, 390 comments and 87 shares at time of publication. Some commenters seemed confused by the need for a US leader to come calling at an ASEAN shindig. More than a few saw the similarities with the pandemic, claiming that the authorities might as well just declare an MCO (movement control order). It'd certainly save the hassle of being stuck in traffic for hours. Better still, just declare public holiday as seems to be the typical SOP (standard operating procedure) in Malaysia. One observer wanted a tit-for-tat response to implementation of US tariffs on Malaysian exports, taxing the special presidential ride (codenamed The Beast). However, one did see a positive side to the whole affair. Malaysians will be getting better roads as the route will be patched up to be good as new. Modifying Trump's much trumpeted 'MAGA' (Making America Great Again) slogan, one commenter declared the US Commander in Chief had come to 'Make ASEAN Great Again'. So perhaps Malaysians should perhaps just bask in the privilege of such a visit. – Aug 2, 2025

Bernama inks collaboration with HIMC to promote tourism, drive economic growth

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) formalised a strategic collaboration with Hainan International Media Center (HIMC) to enhance the promotion of Malaysia's tourism industry and stimulate economic growth. Bernama Chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai said the news agency is prepared to play an active role in showcasing distinctive local tourism offerings to attract more international visitors, especially from China. 'This marks the first collaboration between Bernama and HIMC to showcase Malaysia's tourism industry and investment landscape through media platforms. "They are eager to discover and help highlight local products and notable tourist destinations in Malaysia, such as the scenic beaches of Penang and Terengganu, to audiences in China," he told Bernama after the signing ceremony here on Friday (Aug 1). He said Malaysia would also serve as a strategic partner in promoting tourism in Hainan province, which offers more affordable travel options compared to other destinations. The partnership was formalised under the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor Cultural Cooperation Alliance, which brings together HIMC and several Malaysian organisations, including Bernama, Kwong Wah Yit Poh, Nanyang Siang Pau, MILA University, the Federation of Hainan Association Malaysia, and the Malaysia Asean-China Economic and Trade Development Promotion Association. The alliance aims to foster closer collaboration between media and cultural organisations in Malaysia and China, focusing on supporting content co-production, talent development and policy coordination. Additionally, the alliance places a strong emphasis on youth collaboration, with institutions such as MILA University in Malaysia and the Lingshui Haifeng International Film and Television Base in Hainan, which cooperate on exchange programmes, creative workshops, and training initiatives to nurture regional talent. Meanwhile, HIMC's Senior Advisor on Hainan-Asean International Communication, Dr Pua Eng Teck, said Malaysia was chosen as a strategic hub due to its strong historical and cultural ties with the Malaysian Chinese community, particularly in the fields of business, culture and information exchange. 'Kuala Lumpur is the central city of Malaysia, offering strategic geographical advantages and greater opportunities to foster people-to-people and business-to-business connections,' he said. Beyond business collaboration, Dr Pua also highlighted the benefits for students, especially those from China pursuing higher education in Malaysia. 'HIMC plays a key role not just in promoting cultural ties, but also in supporting educational exchange. It provides a strong platform for Chinese students studying in Malaysia to engage more deeply with local communities and institutions,' he added. – BERNAMA

PONTIANAK (July 30): A Sarawak delegation led by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan has met with West Kalimantan (Kalbar) Governor Drs H Ria Norsan here to strengthen regional ties. The pivotal meeting underscored Sarawak's commitment to deepening bilateral ties, attracting high-value investments, fostering innovation, and enhancing regional economic integration. During the meeting, Awang Tengah, who is Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment, highlighted Sarawak's role as a regional leader in renewable energy and a hub for semiconductor and aerospace industries, emphasising the state's drive for high-value investments and innovation. The discussion also covered air connectivity, including the resumption of the Kuching-Pontianak flight this September, the Sarawak government's takeover of MASwings and its rebranding as AirBorneo, as well as the 2024 launch of the Singkawang-Kuching bus route. 'These initiatives aim to enhance regional connectivity, cross-border trade, tourism, and business linkages across Borneo and the wider Asean region,' said Awang Tengah. He also advocated for the expedition of trade normalisation at the border, including a proposal for a joint economic border committee for mutual development. 'Both sides expressed strong interest in enhancing people-to-people and business-to-business exchanges. 'The upcoming Kuching–Pontianak direct flights, starting Sept 12, 2025, are expected to significantly boost tourism and healthcare access,' he said. He added that the Sarawak government's initiative to establish a Trade and Tourism Office (Stato) in Pontianak further solidifies the state's commitment to long-term regional integration. The visit concluded with a mutual commitment to joint initiatives that will enhance connectivity, promote innovation, and drive sustainable economic progress for both Sarawak and Kalbar.
