A bout 35 Indians will try to seal a FIDE knockout World Cup berth when they play the Asian Individual chess championship at Al Ain, UAE, from Wednesday. This will be the first continental meet where Russian players will take part in the official meet of their new affiliated continental federation — Asian Chess Federation .The last continental cy- cle had given eight World Cup berths to Asia (four each from two events). Now, due to the Russian presen- ce, those have been increa- sed to 10.The top-two from the Asian women's event, which will be played con- currently, will get women's World Cup spots. Russia had made the switch from European Chess Union to Asia in early 2023 and their players did not participate in the European individual championship this year from which top-20 players made it to the World Cup.'It is unfair on Asian players as the Asian continental berths available to the non-Russians will be reduced due to the presence of Russians,' seven-time National champion Praveen Thipsay told TOI.'FIDE tries to protect the interest of Russian players. If Russians were to play in the European Championship, they would be denied visa, because chess federations in western Europe have no social influence in their countries.'All India Chess Federa- tion secretary Dev Patel told this paper: 'Presence of Rus- sia in Asia doesn't make much of a difference. Indian players will have tougher competition and that can be good.'Top 10 Russian players are not playing in the Asian continental as they could qualify for the 206-player expanded and watered-down World Cup through other paths. The women's World Cup is a 103-player event.Olympiad winner Vantika Agrawal, PV Nandhidhaa and Padmini Rout are the top Indian women entries in the Asian with 12 men among the top-25 seeds being Indians. Nihal Sarin, Murali Karthikeyan, Leon Mendonca, Abhimanyu Puranik, Pranav and Pranesh are some of the notable Indians participating. The top-rated Russian at the Asian men's meet is 16th seed David Paravyan (Elo 2596). Still, the strength of Russians cannot be denied as 10 GMs (above Elo 2500) are participating in the nine-round swiss league meet. That strength from one country is as good as the top-10 of the world's elite women chess players.

Rajeev Shukla likely to replace Roger Binny as BCCI President

With the incumbent Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president, Roger Binny, set to turn 70 next month, Rajeev Shukla is likely to take over as the interim chief for a period of three months. According to the BCCI constitution, an office-bearer cannot hold a position beyond the age of 70, which makes Binny, a member of India's 1983 World Cup-winning team, ineligible for the role after July 19. Shukla, who is currently the vice-president of the Board and the senior-most office-bearer in the present regime, will oversee the president's duties until a new chief is elected. Shukla has held the position of BCCI vice-president since late 2020. He also served as the secretary of the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association until 2017 and was the chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL) until 2018.

Maxwell's decision to retire stems from his desire to concentrate on preparations for next year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, the domestic Big Bash League, and other international commitments. He admitted that he could no longer maintain peak performance in the ODI format. 'I felt like I was letting the team down a bit with how my body was reacting to the conditions. I had a good chat with George Bailey, the Chair of Selectors, and asked for his thoughts on the future," Maxwell stated on the Final Word Podcast. 'We discussed the 2027 World Cup, and I told him, 'I don't think I am going to make it. It's time to start planning for others to take my place and make it their own.' 'Hopefully, they get enough time to secure that role. I always said I wouldn't give up my position if I felt I was still good enough to play. I didn't want to hold on for a few more series for selfish reasons. The team is moving in a clear direction, so this gives them the best chance to plan for the next World Cup. I understand how crucial that planning is."

Rajeev Shukla likely to replace Roger Binny as acting BCCI president as 1983 World Cup-winner nears age limit: Sources

ANI Updated 2 Jun 2025, 11:33 AM IST The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) vice-president Rajeev Shukla is likely to become the acting president of the board in July after the current president Roger Binny, touches the age of 70 on July 19 this year, as per sources. The 65-year-old Shukla will first get the acting president role for three months. With the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in September, the month he would turn 66, Shukla could stand for the post of full-time president in the elections, added the sources. Binny was elected as the 36th president of BCCI in October 2022, replacing ex-Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly, who completed his three-year tenure. Notably, Binny was the only candidate to have filed a nomination for the top post. During his presidency, India won two white-ball titles, the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He also introduced the Women's Premier League (WPL), a women's franchise cricket league on the lines of highly-successful IPL. It was during his presidency that several steps related to proper strengthening and prioritising domestic cricket with help of better incentives, pay and having seniors participate in domestic tournaments took place. Binny, a bowling all-rounder, has represented India in 27 Test matches and 72 ODIs. He took 47 wickets in Tests and scored 830 runs with five half-centuries. In 72 ODIs, he took 77 wickets and scored 629 runs with a half-century. The right-arm pacer bagged 47 wickets in tests while also picking 77 in ODIs. He was a crucial contributor to India's first-ever World Cup victory, being the highest wicket-taker for India in the 1983 World Cup with 18 wickets. Binny has previously served as a member of the BCCI selection committee.
