Bookshop stops selling JK Rowling titles over trans views
Booksmith, which refers to itself as a 'group of queer book lovers', has stopped selling Rowling's titles in response to her new legal fund, created to support 'women's sex-based rights'.
'With this announcement, we've decided to stop carrying her books,' the San Francisco bookshop wrote on Instagram, encouraging fans of the Harry Potter series to buy second-hand copies instead.
'We don't know exactly what her new 'women's fund' will entail, but we know that we aren't going to be a part of it. As a group of queer book lovers, we also had our adolescences shaped by wizards and elves. Look at us, it's obvious,' the post read.
'If you or someone you love wants to dive into the world of Harry Potter, we suggest doing so by buying used copies of these books.'
On Monday, Booksmith, which has operated in the city's Haight-Ashbury neighbourhood since 1976, published a list of fantasy books on its website similar to the Harry Potter series, under the heading: 'Wizards, but not That Wizard'.
'Please find below a list of bookseller-curated suggestions for books we genuinely love that also might fit the HP brief for you and yours,' the website read.
The move sparked a censorship row on social media, with one person commenting: 'So you're going to curate your selections to only sell books by authors that you agree with politically. Good to know. I'll be shopping elsewhere.'
Another accused Booksmith of 'choosing to silence someone you disagree politically with'.
The shop responded by claiming the ban on Rowling's novels is 'not politics at all' and is 'no different' to encouraging readers to buy from independent book stores.
'There are plenty of books we carry that we don't 'agree' with, but in this case, it's not politics at all,' it said.
'When the author of a book states that all sales of those books will contribute to an anti-trans fund, the only way we can choose not to participate is by not selling the books any longer. it's no different than when we encourage you to buy your books in indies rather than purchase them on Amazon.
'It stands in direct opposition to everything we believe in and that we have tried to uphold in our nearly 50 years of selling books.
'If you want to read the HP books, we implore you to buy them used locally, where the money stays in the community you love.'
The author in May announced that she would funnel her personal wealth into a JK Rowling Women's Fund, described as a legal endowment to support 'individuals organisations fighting to retain women's sex-based rights in the workplace, in public life, and in protected female spaces'.
Although the fund does not mention the transgender community specifically, Rowling has been a vocal defender of women's spaces and sex-based rights.
Booksmith is one of several US cultural institutions that have boycotted Rowling over her gender-critical views.
In August 2023, the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle scrubbed its Harry Potter exhibits of all mention of the author, describing her as ' She Who Must Not Be Named '.
Despite public backlash against Rowling for her views on transgender issues, there is little evidence of activism impacting on her book sales.
The Harry Potter books have sold 230 million copies in the US and 600 million worldwide, making it the bestselling book series of all time, according to US publisher Scholastic.
Forbes estimated Rowling has earned more than $80 million (£60 million) a year from book sales and Potterverse brand extensions including films, theme parks and theatre shows since she first began speaking out on women's rights in 2020.

Selena Gomez sizzles in pink lingerie as she poses for bedroom selfie
Selena Gomez stunned as she donned pink lingerie for a new selfie that was shared to her main Instagram page on Friday. The 33-year-old actress - who recently glammed up to celebrate the launch of her Rare Beauty perfume - took the snap in the reflection of a vanity mirror inside what appeared to be a spacious bedroom. She wore a pink slip with lace details and allowed her dark locks to brush her shoulders in natural waves. Selena additionally sported a pair of pink-rimmed glasses as she showed off the look before settling in for the evening. Behind her was a television that seemingly had the series How I Met Your Mother playing in the background. A lit candle could be seen on the vanity while a light above the star created an orange hue. The selfie was included in an Instagram carousel, with another image showing Selena enjoying a dinner with her fiancé Benny Blanco and other pals. The former Disney channel star donned an all-black ensemble as she took the picture while the group was seated outside. The Wolves singer continued to give her fans a glimpse at other recent moments from her life, such as another mirror selfie she took inside a public bathroom. Selena wore a cropped, black tank as well as black trousers as she held a big smile on her face. She also snapped another selfie as she lounged on a comfy couch, and revealed that she was indulging in a Pedialyte freezer popsicle. The Pedialyte popsicles can help with dehydration while also replenishing lost fluids and electrolytes. Selena included a rare image with her younger half-sister Gracie as they spent time on a rooftop together that was decked out in disco-themed decor for the star's 33rd birthday bash last month. Other recent moments in her busy life included a visit to a Tiffany & Co. cafe and promoting products from her Rare Beauty brand. Selena also included a rare image with her younger half-sister Gracie as they spent time on a rooftop together that was decked out in disco-themed decor for the star's 33rd birthday bash last month Earlier this month, the star celebrated the launch of perfume for her brand and rang in the milestone during an event in Santa Monica. Selena put on a glamorous display in a $2,298 Cult Gaia Renata dress that clung to her frame and fell down past her ankles. Her hair was parted in the middle and pulled back into a chic up do and the actress also opted for a nude-colored tint to her lips. Other celebrities were also spotted at the event last week, including fellow singer Becky G. The songstress has been keeping busy as the summer season begins to wind down to a close, and recently attended a wedding with her fiancé Benny. Selena jumped to Instagram to share moments from the nuptials of rapper-comedian David 'Lil Dicky' Burd and producer Kristin Batalucco. The star made a bold statement wearing a $498 backless red Cult Gaia 'Katara' dress for the ceremony while Benny kept it casual in a blue tracksuit. Selena also included pictures of both the bride and groom, and in another snap, the actress laid a loving kiss on the side of her fiancé's face. The couple are also preparing for a wedding of their own - after announcing their engagement late last year in December. At the time, the former Disney channel star revealed that Benny had proposed to her during a romantic picnic on a set. She posted a series of snaps to her main Instagram page that had captured the special moment. In one image, the star only showed her left hand to give her followers a close-up glimpse of the eye-catching diamond ring. Last month in July, details of Selena and Benny's alleged wedding was also revealed to Daily Mail. A source stated that the couple plan to allegedly tie the knot later this year in September in Montecito, California. A source said, 'Selena and Benny's wedding is going to be a two-day event in Montecito in September.' Close family and friends will be invited, including the actress's BFF Taylor Swift and her boyfriend Travis Kelce. 'Everyone invited has been asked to bring overnight bags to stay for the weekend,' the insider also added. Due to Selena and Benny's busy schedules, a wedding in September was the 'ideal' time for the two stars. 'Selena loves being engaged but she has been dreaming of being married forever,' a separate source told Daily Mail. 'At the end of the year, it gets busy, not only for them, but also for everyone they want to attend.' Another insider also shut down speculation that the wedding date was to 'accommodate' Taylor's own schedule. 'Selena is not having her wedding to accommodate Taylor, but she wants her to attend and she would love for her to be able to go with Travis.' The Only Murders In The Building actress has also revealed an unconventional menu item that she wants at her upcoming wedding. In a TikTok clip that was shared to Rare Beauty's account last month, the star said, 'My preferred dessert would be biscuits and gravy.' Selena continued, 'My Nana's biscuits and gravy. That sounds like dessert to me. Whenever that day comes, I do know I don't want a big cake.' In regards to what kind of cake she would want, the singer explained, 'I think I'd want a mini one, for just us, that we can freeze.' However, Benny also revealed in July that both he and Selena have yet to start making wedding plans. During an episode of Therapuss With Jake Shane, he explained, 'Not yet, that's why we both need to chill. We've both been working so much. 'We got engaged and then we were filming music videos for our album, then then it's holidays, then right after the holidays we had to start all the promo for our stuff, do that.' The record producer later said that they have been both 'working on so many things that we hadn't even had time to get into it but we're so excited.'

Putin jabs Joe Biden by saying he would have never invaded Ukraine if Trump were in charge
Vladimir Putin pointed the finger at former President Joe Biden for allowing the war with Ukraine to materialize. The Russian leader confirmed that if President Donald Trump were still in office at the time in 2022, he wouldn't have started the war more than three years ago. Putin said during remarks at a joint press conference in Anchorage, Alaska on Friday that he warned Biden that he shouldn't let the situation progress to 'the point of no return when it would come to hostilities.' 'I said it quite directly back then that it's a big mistake,' Putin said, according to a real-time translation. He insisted: 'President Trump saying that if he was the president back then there would be no war, and I'm quite sure that would indeed be so, I can confirm that.' Putin's comments were the ultimate flattery on an impressionable president, who he was desperately trying to keep from fully embracing Ukraine and Europe's cause. Trump has repeatedly claimed that he would have been able to use his relationship with Putin to stop Russia from invading Ukraine if he were reelected in 2020. On June 16, 2021, Biden and Putin met in-person for a summit in Geneva, Switzerland amid rising tensions between Moscow and Washington, D.C. Just eight months later on February 24, 2022, Putin invaded Ukraine, kick-starting a deadly war that still wages on today and has left thousands dead and displaced. Trump's negotiations with Putin appear to be Ukraine's last chance to get an end to the bloodshed and land grab by Russia. European leaders have expressed concern that Trump will concede too much land, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has recognized that a peace deal might need to include handing over more land area to Putin's regime. President Putin said on Friday that having a good trustworthy business relationship with Trump makes him confident that 'we can come to see the end of the conflict in Ukraine.' Though the two leaders acknowledged there is still a far way to go. Additionally, no ceasefire was announced in their joint press conference. 'I have every reason to believe that moving down this path we can come to see the end of the conflict in Ukraine,' Putin said at the end of his remarks. And if the greeting between Trump and Putin was any indication of their relationship, it's very likely the two are chummy. The two were smiling as they saw each other in the flesh for the first time since 2018. With an abundance of physical contact and a round of applause from Trump for the authoritarian leader, body language expert Judi James tells the Daily Mail that he gave Putin 'the ultimate ego-stroke' by publicly treating him like a celebrity guest. Putin appeared visibly pleased with how the lengthy greeting went, and James said he was left 'purring' with delight. Experts warn that Trump already handed Putin a 'victory' by inviting him to U.S. soil for the first time in more than a decade and agreeing to exclude Zelensky. But James notes that the U.S. president's tone swiftly altered when they were in a room for their official talks. He took a more 'heavyweight, power pose' as it was time to get down to business, she notes. 'After the overkill cordiality of his greeting ritual Trump's grim expression and his tapping fingertips here suddenly gave him a tougher and less optimistic look,' James notes. After their nearly three-hour face-to-face meeting, Trump and Putin took turns speaking in a 12-minute joint press conference. They took no questions. The meeting was the first time they sat down in-person since Trump came back into office. It also was the first time that Putin stepped foot on U.S. soil since he was in New York City in 2015 for a United Nations General Assembly gathering where he also met with then-President Barack Obama.

Highlights of Putin statement after summit with Trump
ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Aug 15 (Reuters) - Following are key quotes from Russian President Vladimir Putin's statement after meeting U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska on Friday. Translation by Reuters. As is known, Russian-American summits have not been held for more than four years. This is a long time. The past period was very difficult for bilateral relations. And, let's be honest, they have slid to the lowest point since the Cold War. And this is not good for our countries, or the world as a whole. Obviously, sooner or later, it was necessary to correct the situation, to move from confrontation to dialogue. And in this regard, a personal meeting of the heads of the two states was really overdue... As you well know and understand, one of the central issues has become the situation around Ukraine. We see the desire of the U.S. administration and President Trump personally to facilitate the resolution of the Ukrainian conflict, his desire to delve into the essence and understand its origins. I have said more than once that for Russia the events in Ukraine are associated with fundamental threats to our national security. Moreover, we have always considered and consider the Ukrainian people, I have said this many times, brotherly, no matter how strange that may sound in today's conditions. We have the same roots and everything that is happening for us is a tragedy and a great pain. Therefore, our country is sincerely interested in putting an end to this. But at the same time, we are convinced that in order for the Ukrainian settlement to be sustainable and long-term, all the root causes of the crisis must be eliminated... All of Russia's legitimate concerns must be taken into account, and a fair balance in the security sphere in Europe and the world as a whole must be restored. I agree with President Trump — he spoke about this today — that Ukraine's security must, without a doubt, be ensured. We are ready to work on this. I would like to hope that the understanding we have reached will allow us to get closer to that goal and open the way to peace in Ukraine. We expect that Kyiv and the European capitals will perceive all of this in a constructive manner and will not create any obstacles. That they will not attempt to disrupt the emerging progress through provocation or behind-the-scenes intrigue. It is obvious that Russian-American business and investment partnership has enormous potential. Russia and the United States have something to offer each other in trade, energy, the digital sphere, high tech and space exploration. Cooperation in the Arctic, resumption of interregional contacts, including between our Far East and the American West Coast, also seem relevant... I expect that today's agreements will become a reference point not only for solving the Ukrainian problem, but will also launch the restoration of business-like, pragmatic relations between Russia and the United States. Overall we have established very good business-like and trusting contact with President Trump. And I have every reason to believe that by moving along this path, we can - the quicker the better - reach an end to the conflict in Ukraine.
