Aberdeen legend joins Dons fans for Scottish Cup final in the sun

Two Aberdeen supporters' clubs will celebrate this weekend's Scottish Cup final against Celtic in the sunny surroundings of Tenerife.
Both the Tenerife Dons and the Zizzi Dons will mark the occasion at their respective bars which are located just a stone's throw away from each other.
Those at Zizzi's Bar will be joined by a very special guest to watch the big game – Aberdeen legend Joe Harper.
With shirt giveaways, sweepstakes, and free shots on arrival, both of the bars are expecting a good turnout from Dandies on the island.
Record goalscorer Joe Harper, who has been to Zizzi's several times, will be watching the game from the Los Cristianos bar.
Harper, who hit 199 goals for the club, doesn't think Aberdeen has the best chance against the league champions.
'I'd be lying if I said I thought we would win, but you never know,' he said.
'Jimmy Thelin has a real challenge on his hands.
'Back in 1970 when we played Celtic in the final, no one gave us a chance, and we were totally written off.
'I remember Celtic had ordered crates of champagne that we had to walk past.
'That fuelled us on, and hopefully being underdogs will have a similar effect for the lads on Saturday.'
Whatever the result will be, Joe is in the ideal setting for the game.
'Tenerife is definitely a happy place for me,' he shared.
'It's been booked for a while, I didn't realise it was Cup Final weekend.
'I've been heading over to Zizzi's for years, and have a lot of friends there.
'Whether it's a great win or a disappointing defeat, I think I'll be in a great spot surrounded by a brilliant crowd.'
Zizzi's has been a popular spot for Aberdeen fans on the Canary Islands for years.
And Joe Harper is one of many former Dons who have stopped by the bar.
Owner Willie Bruce said: 'King Joey is coming along on Saturday, which is always great for the supporters.
'He's a good friend and knows the staff well.
'We'll have a raffle going for a signed shirt, and then hopefully we'll be getting our signature shots out after we win!'
Victory Bar is the new home of the original Tenerife supporters club, the Tenerife Dons.
The club moved into its new surroundings at the beginning of March.
Founding member Martyn Mackie says things have been going well for the group since finding their new home.
He said: 'We've had a great response so far. It's proving really popular.
'It catches the sun really well.
'So when the guys want to watch the game and they bring their wives or girlfriends who aren't into football, there's never much complaining because they get a good tan.'
There's expected to be a great turnout at Victory Bar for the Hampden clash.
'We've got a really good day planned. We've got a correct goal sweepstake, as well as activities for the kids,' Martyn added.
'There will be free shots for everyone, given it's the Cup Final.
'We have our new Tenerife Dons T-shirts on sale, as well as the usual collection for the community fund.
'Following the last league game, our total raised for the fund has reached over £8,000 for the season.
'A few of us are heading back home for the game, but our Tenerife Dons members will still be there to look after the tourists.'

We beat the European Cup winners to put two stars above the Aberdeen badge, that's something special says Mark McGhee

Beating European Cup winners Hamburg over two legs, it's a triumph still celebrated at Pittodrie and sung about by the Red Army. Mark McGhee, scorer of the Dons' second goal against his future club in the 2-0 win, insists Fergie's players took landing the Euro bragging rights' title as seriously as any game. He said: 'It was something we took seriously, we wanted to win it once we were in it. 'A lot of the talk was that it's not as prestigious as the main competitions, which it isn't, of course. 'The best way to describe it, probably, is a bit like a European version of the Charity Shield in England. 'But you're not telling me the fans of Crystal Palace and Liverpool didn't enjoy that last weekend. 'It's a celebration of what you have already achieved and the opportunity to put the crowning glory on it. 'With us winning the Cup Winners' Cup, we relished pitting ourselves against the European Cup winners. Kris Boyd drops a bombshell and reveals ABERDEEN tried to sign him before he joined Rangers 'The fact that Aberdeen have the two stars on the shirt to this day is a lasting reminder of how important it was. 'That sort of thing wasn't around in those days so it obviously didn't dawn on us at the time, but seeing the two stars now is something special.' McGhee scored the Dons' second on the night, after a goalless draw in Germany, following on from Neil Simpson's opener. But hitting the net is the only thing he can recall from the night. He said: 'As far as the game goes, I only really remember the goal. 'I'm like that with any game, some of the boys remember all the details - John Hewitt is great for that - but scoring is the only thing I can ever recall! 'Amongst the squad Neil Simpson and I have always claimed the fame of being the two goalscorers. 'We have always been a little team in a way because we scored - any time we meet up, we wind everyone up that we were the scorers.' Eric Black on the Gothenburg Greats, Sir Alex Ferguson & remembering Neale Cooper McGhee ended up signing for Hamburg the following season after German legend Gunter Netzer - their sporting director - turned up at his flat in Aberdeen. He said: 'That game definitely played a part in me getting to Hamburg. 'I'd scored against them before in the Uefa Cup, against Franz Beckenbauer, which is one I definitely remember clearly. 'I think Hamburg had remembered that goal as well. 'So they knew what I could do. 'Hamburg are a great club and going there had a lot going for it. 'When Gunter Netzer came to my house, my flat in Aberdeen, that's what swung it for me. 'We didn't get much notice he was coming but were still able to get a tray of open sandwiches ready for him!' Celtic legend Neil Lennon spotted rocking shades and Oasis t-shirt in the sunshine on his way to Murrayfield gig

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) NEIL LENNON is hoping to pull off The Masterplan with Dunfermline in the Scottish Championship this season. But tonight the two-time Celtic boss would have felt like he was Half The World Away as he put football on hold and headed to the capital to join in with the Oasis party at Murrayfield. Sign up for the Celtic newsletter Sign up 1 Neil Lennon on his way to the Murrayfield concert Lennon, 54, was in attendance at the home of Scottish rugby with around 70,000 others for the legendary band's third and final gig in Edinburgh. The Northern Irishman has been a fan of Liam and Noel Gallagher for decades and it isn't his first time at one of their concerts. He even displayed his love for the Manchester group on his way to the Edinburgh venue as he was pictured wearing an Oasis t-shirt displaying an iconic picture of the two brothers. Celtic legend Lennon, who previously starred for Manchester City - Neil and Liam's favourite club - even named his son Gallagher after the famous pair. Speaking previously about his love for the band, the gaffer revealed: 'I'd just joined Manchester City in 1987 when the whole Britpop thing erupted. 'I've seen Oasis 13 or 14 times, including at Maine Road, which is one of the best gigs I've ever been at. I've met them a few times – Liam is a lot smarter than he makes out, and Noel just cracks you up every time he opens his mouth. "I named my son after them as well. He's called Gallagher.' The Dunfermline boss has now made it either 14 or 15 Oasis gigs after revealing the amount of times he's watched and listened to them live is well into the double digits. And it's fair to say there's been some wild and memorable nights over the years. On his way to Murrayfield, he would have been hoping to just make it out the concert unscathed - after being escorted out of one of their gigs in 1996 following a bust-up with another footballer. Incredible moment Celtic legend Neil Lennon was strangled by boss Martin O'Neill Speaking to Graham Hunter's The Big Interview, Lennon revealed: "The gig was amazing, as all Oasis gigs were in those days. Happy Mondays were on before them, so you can imagine the carnage. "So, I'd gone with Steve Lomas who was the City captain at the time and a couple of other Leicester players and Irish players. "With his bit of pull, Lomas got the group access backstage where they all got to schmooze with the band and other high-profile names. "The only problem it seemed was that 'nobody was talking to Steve'. "Steve gets a bit itchy when he's had a bit to drink and he starts looking at me in a funny way. "So, I'm talking to 'Bonehead', who is the bassist with the band, and his Grandfather about Gaelic football, and I see out of the corner of my eye that Lomas is still looking at me. "So I says, 'what's wrong with you?' Next thing, bang, he stuck the head on me." The Celtic hero went on to reveal that he was chucked out of the concert for fighting with his team-mate, but Lomas WASN'T given his status as Man City's captain. The Hoops have enjoyed direct entry into the Champions League in recent seasons due to Scotland's coefficient ranking, which has now dropped meaning the Scottish champions must negotiate the play-off hurdle to reach the league phase this term. Celtic will face 7000-mile round trip to face Kairat Almaty after the Kazakhstan side emerged victorious in a penalty shoot-out with Slovan Bratislava. The match went to a shoot-out with Almaty emerging victorious. They will travel to Celtic Park for an 8pm kick-off on Wednesday, August 20 with the return leg in Almaty on Tuesday, August 26, kick-off 5.45pm. The Hoops will face Livingston in between after refusing to take up the option of postponing the intervening league fixture. Rangers, meanwhile, will face Club Brugge for a place in the Champions League proper. The Belgians already led 1-0 over RB Salzburg following the first leg in Austria last week and they completed the job on home soil, coming from behind to win 3-2 on the night and earn a 4-2 win on aggregate.
