Operation Sindoor strikes sent clear message to Pakistan: Army chief Upendra Dwivedi
'Operation Sindoor was a message to Pakistan as well as a response to the Pahalgam terror attack, which was a deep wound for the entire nation. This time India did not only mourn but showed that the response will be decisive,' Gen Dwivedi said at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass.
Addressing a gathering on Vijay Diwas, the Chief of Army Staff said a stern response to the adversary was the new normal established by India.
'The faith shown by the countrymen and the free hand given by the government, the Indian Army gave a befitting surgical response. Any power that tries to challenge the unity, integrity, and sovereignty of India or harm the people will be given a befitting reply. This is the new normal of India,' he said.
Gen Dwivedi said that during Operation Sindoor, the army eliminated nine high-value terrorist targets in Pakistan with zero collateral damage.
'India attained a decisive victory by effective targeting of terror infrastructure in Pakistan during Operation Sindoor. The army targeted the terrorist infrastructure and foiled the other aggressive moves of Pakistan to attain a decisive victory,' he said.
Gen. Dwivedi said Indian gave peace a chance, but Pakistan resorted to cowardice.
'The Pakistani action on May 8 and 9 was responded to effectively. Our army air defence stood like an impregnable wall which could not be breached by any missile or drones,' he said.
He said the Indian Army is on its way to becoming a force to reckon with in the world.
'Rudra, all of brigade, is being established for which I gave an approval yesterday. Under this, we will have infantry, mechanised infantry, armoured units, artillery, special forces and unmanned aerial units at one place to provide logistics and combat support,' he said.
The army has formed a special strike force Bhairav Light Commando Unit, which is 'always ready to surprise the enemy at the border.'
Gen. Dwivedi said, 'Every infantry battalion now has a drone platoon. In the artillery, the Shaktiban regiment has been set up, which will be equipped with a drone, counter-drone, and loiter munition. Every regiment will have a composite battery equipped with these things.'
The Army Chief said our capability will increase manifold in coming days as we are equipping the army air defence systems with indigenous missiles.
Recalling the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the silver jubilee celebrations last year, the military chief said the presence of top leaders shows that it is not only an army day but a festival for the entire nation.
'The nation is safe due to the sacrifices made by the heroes at the icy heights. We remember their dedication and determination, and we bow to the brave heroes who laid down their lives so that we can live a peaceful life with dignity,' he added.

India, US may invest in Africa's critical minerals
India and the US have discussed proposals to jointly invest in critical minerals projects in Africa, according to persons aware of the matter. 'We are working closely with India to strengthen bilateral cooperation on critical minerals, an essential priority for both our countries' economic security. Through COMPACT (Catalyzing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology) and TRUST (Transforming the Relationship Utilizing Strategic Technology), we are working together to strengthen supply chains to ensure access to critical minerals and support industry innovation,' said a State Department spokesperson in response to a query from HT. 'At the recent Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting, the Quad partners also announced the launch of the Quad Critical Minerals Initiative, which will strengthen economic security and collective resilience in the face of economic coercion, price manipulation, and supply chain disruptions in this sector,' the spokesperson stated before adding that the State Department has no immediate information to share on joint US-India investments in Africa. In January 2025, India established the ₹16,300 crore National Critical Minerals Mission to boost domestic production of these minerals and reduce dependence on foreign imports. According to the ministry of heavy industries, the Geological Survey of India undertook 368 exploration projects focused on critical and strategic minerals in 2024-25. India has also sought international partners for the creation of new critical minerals supply chains. In 2023, India joined the Minerals Security Partnership , which is led by the United States and includes the European Union, Australia, Japan, South Korea and the United Kingdom. 'MSP partner governments engage across a wide range of agencies and departments, including those responsible for foreign affairs, economy, energy, trade, mining, industry, development finance, and export finance. MSP partners established the Finance Network to bring together the development finance institutions (DFIs) and export credit agencies (ECAs) of the MSP partner governments to concretely focus on project finance,' according to the US State Department. Despite these efforts, the International Energy Agency estimates that efforts to diversify supply chains will make slow progress. For example, IEA predicts that critical minerals refining supply chains will only see marginal diversification by 2035 with China remaining the dominant player.

Acquitted in Malegaon case, Lt Col Purohit receives a hero's welcome
Jubilant scenes unfolded at Shantisheela Housing Society on Law College Road on Saturday as Lt Colonel Prasad Purohit returned home for the first time after being acquitted in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) court, on July 31, acquitted all seven remaining accused, including Purohit, of all charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), Arms Act, and other relevant laws, bringing to an end a legal battle that spanned nearly 17 years. (HT) Purohit, a serving Indian Army officer, was accorded a celebratory welcome with chants of 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and a shower of flower petals. He was visibly moved by the warm reception. 'I am in a different state of mind. Today, I'm being welcomed by my own people. It's a family affair. This society is like family to me. They've seen me since childhood. I am happy and enjoying the moment,' he told reporters. Not even an enemy can question my patriotism and loyalty towards the nation Purohit said. 'As a soldier, what I can say with conviction is that not even an enemy can question my patriotism and loyalty towards the nation. During my submission (in court), I insisted that I be called anything but not aatankwadi (terrorist) or deshdrohi (traitor),' he said. Accompanied by his wife Aparna, the officer first offered prayers at a Hanuman temple located within the housing society. Residents, many of whom have known Purohit for decades, gathered in large numbers to greet him. Drummers dressed in white and saffron played festive rhythms, firecrackers were set off, and Purohit greeted supporters from an open-roof vehicle. Aparna Purohit, overwhelmed by the emotional welcome, recalled the challenges of the past years. 'This journey has been extremely difficult, but the truth has finally triumphed. Many in this colony have seen him since birth. I'm relieved this is over. We just want to live a normal life now. Truth is the ultimate source of power. I always believed he had done nothing wrong. We were determined to fight injustice to the end,' she said. A college friend of Purohit, part of the welcoming committee, said, 'He has finally received justice after 17 years. He returns home not as an accused, but as an innocent man. That is why we felt this welcome was necessary.' The 2008 Malegaon blast occurred on September 29, when a bomb strapped to a motorcycle exploded near a mosque at Bhikkhu Chowk in Malegaon, Nashik district, killing six people and injuring 95 others. The case, initially investigated by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and later handed over to the NIA, had a total of 11 accused. Purohit, who was arrested in November 2008, spent nearly nine years in jail before being granted bail by the Supreme Court in 2017. Over the years, the case became politically and socially charged due to the alleged involvement of individuals linked to right-wing groups, leading to a contentious national debate. The NIA court's verdict came after examining 323 prosecution witnesses and eight defence witnesses. In its ruling, the court noted that there was insufficient evidence to prove the charges under UAPA and other sections against the remaining accused. Purohit's legal team has maintained that he was falsely implicated despite being an Army intelligence officer working to infiltrate and monitor extremist groups. His acquittal has been met with celebration in some quarters, while others have questioned the outcome, calling for a review of the investigation and judicial process.

A special flag to symbolically honour Operation Sindoor, an Under Vehicle Surveillance System (UVSS) amid heightened security measures, a tiered seating arrangement so that can guests can have a better view of the ceremony, and interlocking pavements for better movement of vehicles and visitors: these are the among the firsts for the Independence Day ceremony this year at Red Fort in Delhi. Operation Sindoor was initiated on May 7 this year in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 citizens. It showcased a calibrated, tri-services response, according to the government, and a targeted campaign to dismantle the terror infrastructure across the Line of Control (LoC) and deeper inside Pakistan. In a symbolic gesture, the valour of the forces will be highlighted during the celebrations on August 15 at the Red Fort, said officials. In the run-up to 79th Independence Day, the Delhi Police has already stepped up the security arrangements at the Red Fort. With the officers frp, the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) on senior police deployment, a two-layered ring security system has been put in place, starting Sunday. Around 15,000 personnel of the Delhi Police will be deployed at the Red Fort and the surrounding precinct, officers highlighted. Large-scale mock emergency exercises, hotel inspections, and increased patrolling are among the measures that are already being implemented, said officers. Snipers, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) commandos, drones, and 700 AI-enabled CCTV cameras with facial recognition facility will also be a part of the security arrangements. Specialised cameras can count the visitors and lens blockers obstruct visual access to the high-security targets, said officers, elaborating on the arrangements. Along with the traditional undercarriage checks using a mirror, an officer said, the Delhi Police will be using the UVSS to scan the underside of the vehicles for hazardous substances. In another first, bleacher seating system or a tiered seating arrangement will be in place this time. The space-efficient seating system — which is seen in stadiums — will ensure that the guests can have a better and orderly view of the celebration, said officers. To curb logistical issues that plagued the ceremony in the last few years, such as waterlogging, the authorities have sought assistance from the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) to install interlocking pavements. This will help the authorities to accommodate up to 2,000 parked cars and ease pedestrian movement. On August 15, Delhi Police will also deploy 'kite-catchers' to make sure that stray kites do not move into restricted airspace over the Red Fort. The officers will be on high alert in a bid to ensure a clear flying zone.
