Doncaster police officer jailed for sending sexualised messages
A former South Yorkshire Police officer has been jailed for nine months for sending inappropriate and sexualised messages to a vulnerable woman.Stuart Trentham, 41 was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court for an offence of misconduct in a public offence.At the beginning of his trial, Trentham pleaded guilty to the charge.Sentencing him, the Recorder of Sheffield, Jeremy Richardson KC, said Trentham's actions had "undermined" public confidence in the police.
The court heard that in July 2022, Trentham had been assigned to investigate a case where a woman from Doncaster had complained to the police that images of a sexual and explicit nature had been shared of her online by another party.Trentham had forwarded police emails involving details of the case, which included sexually explicit images of the complainant, to his own personal email address.
'Suggestive emojis'
The court heard that in August 2022 South Yorkshire Police closed the case, having been unable to identify a suspect - but Trentham lied to the complainant by telling her that he was still investigating the matter.He proceeded to send her messages from his personal mobile phone and email account that were described as "unprofessional which then became inappropriate and sexualised", according to prosecution counsel Josh Bell.The court heard that in one message, Trentham told the woman "I do prefer a curvy woman" and "have you got a plans for this evening?" while using sexually suggestive emojis. In another message Trentham sent a picture of himself in his police uniform with a winking emoji to the woman.In a victim impact statement read to the court, the woman said that she "had put her faith and trust in a police officer but instead she had been taken advantage of" and that since July 2022 her life has been "ruined".In evidence it was established that Trentham had no physical relationship with the woman, but the court heard that the complainant's existing mental health issues had been exacerbated by Trentham's actions, leading her to fall into depression and bouts of anxiety that had required medical intervention.Counsel for the defence David James said Trentham's guilty plea was an acknowledgement of the wrong that he had done and that he publicly wanted to apologise to both the woman and his former colleagues at South Yorkshire Police.Mr James also told the court that Trentham had begun to turn his life around, training to become a HGV driver and that factors such as the breakdown in the father of two's marriage and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) developed through his role as a police officer had contributed to his decision making.Recorder Richardson noted that Trentham had taken positive steps in his life and recognised the presence of PTSD due to his police role.However he went on to say that the offence "was a serious breach of trust in relation to a vulnerable victim"."As a former police officer. prison will fall particularly hard upon you and special measures will be put in place to protect you," he said.Listen to highlights from South Yorkshire on BBC Sounds, catch up with the latest episode of Look North or tell us a story you think we should be covering here.

Montrose driver with 'no empathy' left pedestrian, 64, with horrific eye injuries in road rage attack
A road rage thug from Montrose who left a 64-year-old man needing to have his retina re-attached has been jailed. Robert Cobb was locked up after attacking his victim twice during the same incident. Despite admitting to police he punched the man in the face, Cobb claimed the serious injuries were caused by his victim drunkenly falling. Cobb was slammed by a sheriff for having 'no empathy' and was locked up for more than a year. At previous hearing, Forfar Sheriff Court heard Cobb had driven past the 64-year-old at 9pm on July 15 2023 near the river in Montrose, on the corner of Wharf Street and Shore Wynd. He heard Cobb's Vauxhall Astra's brakes screech as he passed and as the motorist passed, the stranger said: 'Oh here we go, another d**khead'. Cobb stopped the vehicle, got out and told him: 'I heard what you f***ing said, me and my wife heard it.' He punched him on the head twice and as he was walking back to his car, turned and asked: 'Are you laughing?' He returned and punched him twice more to the head, then drove off. Cobb's victim suffered a bleeding nose and a hairline fracture to his cheekbone, a blood clot at the back of his left eye and a detached retina. After the assault, he reported seeing 'floaters' in his left eye as well as a cataract, both as a result of blunt force trauma. A month after the assault, the man had his retina re-attached and reports he has recovered. Cobb was identified as the attacker when a relative and the victim's sister discussed the incident five days later. Police interviewed Cobb in mid-August 2023 and he freely told officers: 'I did lift a hand. 'To tell you the truth, I think he's fallen after having a drink to cause himself these injuries. 'I only hit him twice to the nose.' Before a jury trial scheduled in April, Cobb pled guilty to severely injuring and impairing his victim. The court heard he has previous assault convictions dating back to 2010. Sentencing had been deferred for reports on the HGV driver, of Montrose. Solicitor Billy Rennie said: 'This is effectively road rage against a pedestrian who, on the face of it, was making comments to him about the manner of his driving. 'He's 57, he lives alone. He is back leading what seems to be a fairly prosocial life. 'This seems to be a fairly isolated incident that hasn't thankfully had significant long-term consequences for the complainer. 'He pretty much sees everything black and white, there's not much nuance to his thinking.' Cobb had been on bail since first appearing in court on September 12 in 2023. Sheriff Mark Thorley jailed him for 15 months. He said: 'This was an entirely unprovoked assault on a member of the public. 'Having assaulted the complainer, you went back and assaulted him again a second time. 'This caused significant consequences for the complainer. 'What makes it worse is what you've said in the report – effectively it was his fault. 'It's a serious assault. There's no empathy here. 'There is absolutely no alternative but a custodial sentence here.'

Murder suspects remanded in custody accused of killing boy, 16
Zulkernain Ahmed, 20, and Armaan Ahmed, 26, were not asked to enter any pleas when they were remanded in custody at Sheffield Magistrates' Court accused of killing Abdullah Yaser Abdullah Al Yazidi. The teenager was walking along Staniforth Road in the Darnall area of Sheffield last Wednesday when he was hit by an Audi car and suffered fatal injuries. Abdullah Yaser Abdullah Al Yazidi, who died after being hit by a car last week (South Yorkshire Police/PA) Police said officers understood that the Audi had driven towards three electric bikes, colliding with one rider, an 18-year-old man who suffered serious but non life-threatening injuries. District Judge James Gould was told that the two defendants are both charged with the same offences, all alleged to have been committed on Wednesday June 4. The judge told Ahmed and Ahmed, who appeared alongside each other in the glass-fronted dock: 'The next hearing in your case in respect of all of these charges is the 10th of June at the crown court in Sheffield. 'You have no right to apply for bail at this stage and accordingly you are remanded in custody and you will appear tomorrow at the Crown Court.' During the three-minute hearing on Monday, the men, both of Locke Drive, Darnall, spoke only to give their names, dates of birth and address. Relatives of Abdullah said last week that he had recently arrived in the UK from Yemen 'for a better future' and was devoted to his family. He arrived in the UK two or three months ago, and was enjoying learning English ahead of starting at college in September. Abdullah's relative Saleh Alsirkal said: 'His dad brought him over to change his life, to get a better future for his son, but this has happened and destroyed everything.' Mr Alsirkal added that Abdullah was a 'kind boy' who just wanted to look after his family, including his three sisters. Two people, a man aged 46 and a 45-year-old woman, arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, have both been bailed pending further inquiries, police said.
