
Dogs Able to Sniff Out Parkinson's Before Symptoms Appear
The findings may help inform key biomarkers for PD before symptoms appear. There is currently no single diagnostic test for PD, and reported estimates show roughly a quarter of patients are misdiagnosed.
'Sensitivity levels of 70% and 80% are well above chance, and I believe that dogs could help us to develop a quick noninvasive, and cost-effective method to identify patients with Parkinson's disease,' lead investigator Nicola Rooney, associate professor at Bristol Veterinary School at the University of Bristol, Bristol, England, said in a news release.
The study was published online on July 14 in the Journal of Parkinson's Disease .
The Nose Knows
Previous studies have shown that dogs can detect disease-specific odors in human breath or urine in patients with cancer, diabetes, and even posttraumatic stress disorder. This study adds to the growing evidence they can also identify PD.
Seborrheic dermatitis and increased sebum production are premotor signs of PD. Previous research published last year by a nonprofit Parkinson's organization based in Washington showed that various breeds of dogs can be trained to recognize sebum unique to PD patients. This led the UK-based researchers to suspect sebum could be used as an indicator of PD.
For this double-blind, randomized controlled trial, investigators collected dry skin swabs from 130 patients with PD and 175 individuals without the condition. Of these, 205 swabs were used for training dogs from the organization Medical Detection Dogs. For double-blind testing, 40 samples were from patients who didn't use drugs for PD (42.5% women; mean age, 69.6 years), and 60 samples were from individuals without PD.
After 38-53 weeks of training, a Golden Retriever named Bumper and a Black Labrador named Peanut were shown samples on four stands in a line. In each line, there was either one positive sample or all controls. Both the trainer and experimenter were blind to the location of positive or negative samples. Computer software confirmed whether the dog's response was correct.
If the dog was unsure, samples were retested in new lines until a clear decision was made. Dogs were rewarded for correctly identifying a positive or negative sample.
The dogs showed high specificity by correctly ignoring 90% and 98.3% of swabs from the control group and high sensitivity by correctly identifying 70% and 80% of the swabs from patients with PD ( P < .0001). Of note, the Labrador had 15 weeks more training than the Golden Retriever and achieved the higher of the two results.
'While we do not envisage dogs being diagnostic, they could potentially, with refinements, help to validate methods of clinical utility…and aid rapid screening and diagnosis,' the investigators wrote.

‘My cancer symptoms were mistaken for signs of menopause – now I'm unable to walk'
A woman has been left unable to walk after her spinal cancer symptoms were mistaken for signs of the menopause and a gardening injury. Karen Davey, 54, from Cornwall, began experiencing hot flushes, fatigue, and loss of appetite in early 2024, but she assumed these were menopause symptoms. But by March 2024, she developed pain in her kidneys and went to visit her GP. However, she was told the back pain was due to gardening, despite having only done 20 minutes of this. Over the next two months, her symptoms worsened and she stopped eating properly, lost weight, and developed a temperature, later losing all sensation in her legs, as well as bladder and bowel function. After being taken to the hospital and admitted for two weeks, she was given the devastating news that she had stage four non-Hodgkin lymphoma in her kidneys, and a tumour wrapped around her spinal cord. After one round of radiotherapy and further chemotherapy, she is now in remission. However, she has been left unable to walk. The 'life-changing' impacts of the cancer have meant she has to reduce her working hours to four a week, while her husband has given up work to be a full-time carer. Ms Davey told the Spinal Injuries Association she felt her symptoms were 'dismissed' by her GP and continued to be dismissed until she was admitted to hospital. She said: 'I'd gone from somebody who was quite active before. I'd do a lot of hiking across the moors, I used to go cold-water swimming all year round. One of the last things I did before I got ill was an abseil off a 120-foot viaduct. 'This isn't what I'm supposed to be doing at this time of life. I've not yet been able to get back to driving or anything like that. I'm completely reliant on my husband; it's messed up my social life, just going out to meet friends or going swimming or popping into town to look around the shops. Emotionally, it's just completely messed me up.' Ms Davey said she wanted to spread awareness of her situation and help others who might be experiencing similar symptoms. She said, 'I had no idea that hot flushes would lead to all this. The symptoms you've got aren't always menopause symptoms, and we need to be more mindful of that. 'I just get annoyed that it was attributed to menopause and doing gardening when it needed looking into a bit more. I didn't know anything about spinal cord injury and when my toes started going tingly, it didn't occur to me that that's what it was. There's not enough information.' Spinal Injuries Association supports people living with spinal cord injuries. Dharshana Sridhar, campaigns manager at the association, said: 'Karen's story is a powerful reminder that women's health symptoms should never be dismissed or explained away without proper investigation. 'Too often, women with spinal cord injuries face delays in diagnosis and unnecessary barriers to equitable care, leaving them to cope with life-changing consequences that could have been prevented. Across the board, women's concerns are frequently overlooked and when disability or other intersecting factors are involved, the barriers to timely diagnosis and treatment become even greater. Through our women's health campaign, we're calling for better awareness, earlier diagnosis, and accessible healthcare for every woman, no matter her disability."

The Northern Lights Are Expected Over 15 U.S. States Tonight—Here's Where to Look
Tonight into tomorrow, the night sky may put on a colorful show for skywatchers in several lucky states. On Aug. 18 and Aug. 19, a fast-moving stream of solar wind could spark a geomagnetic storm, potentially lighting up the sky with Northern Lights across 15 U.S. states, according to forecasters from NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) and the U.K. Met Office. 'There is an increasing possibility during Monday of minor geomagnetic enhancement due to an arriving fast wind, with the possibility of a Coronal Mass Ejection glance Tuesday into Wednesday,' the UK Met Office stated. Alaska has the highest probability of seeing the northern lights tonight. Other states with a chance to spot the aurora, listed in order of likeliness, include: Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Maine, South Dakota, Vermont, New Hampshire, Idaho, Washington, New York, Wyoming, and Iowa. 'Late on 18 Aug, conditions are likely to increase to active levels followed by G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels on 19 Aug. Active conditions are likely on 20 Aug,' NOAA predicts on its website. The aurora is expected to peak between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. from the night of Aug. 18 through the morning of Aug. 19, with the Kp index—which measures geomagnetic activity on a scale of 0 to 9—projected to reach Kp 5 tonight. Currently, a large coronal hole, or open region in the sun's magnetic field, is facing the Earth. This has led to the ejection of a high-speed stream of solar wind toward our planet. When this solar wind interacts with Earth's magnetic field, it increases the likelihood of geomagnetic storms and the possibility of auroral displays. 'Aurora can often be observed somewhere on Earth from just after sunset or just before sunrise. The aurora is not visible during daylight hours. The aurora does not need to be directly overhead but can be observed from as much as 1000 km away when the aurora is bright and if conditions are right,' NOAA's website explains. For those in the potential viewing zones, try to find a north-facing spot with clear view of the horizon and minimal light pollution. There are also several mobile apps that can help track aurora forecasts in real time for the best chance of catching the show.
