Ashhryshoshedap had been on my radar for quite a while — all thanks to Jason Chen's review. If you're not familiar with Jason, he's a well-known Malaysian food critic, famous for his honest yet constructive takes. But honestly, if you haven't heard of him… where have you been?
Now, let's talk about that name. I wasn't exactly thrilled by it. Saying Ashhryshoshedap out loud to my friends felt like baby talk, almost. A little awkward, a lot confusing. But hey, I'm not here to critique branding decisions. I came to Johor Bahru with one mission: to eat.
To my surprise, the place was bigger than expected. There's even an upstairs dining area if you need more space. A little heads-up: you'll need to remove your shoes at the entrance, so maybe leave the holey socks at home.
Browsing the menu was… certainly something. You have to scan a QR code to access it but navigating it was a nightmare. The categories were all over the place, and the quirky, chaotic dish names didn't help. We did have a good laugh, but it definitely took us longer than it should've to just place an order.
Naturally, we went for the dish Jason raved about: Salted Egg Clam Spaghetti (RM29.90). Or, in its full birth name: Spaghetti Salted Egg Clam Creamy Bismillah Yummy (Sweet Creamy & Spicy). See what I mean?
Price-wise, things leaned toward the steeper side, but the portion made up for it; the plate practically took over ¾ of our table. And the moment it landed, the unmistakable aroma of salted egg and curry leaves hit us hard — in a good way.
The pasta was cooked beautifully al dente. But the mouthfeel made me certain that the brand used was Prego. A bit plasticky in texture, not exactly premium. Understandable, though, for a casual eatery.
As for the sauce… it was intense. Think Super Ring snack kind of cheesy-salty-spicy. Tasty? Yes. But probably better suited as a dip than a pasta sauce. The salted egg and curry notes came through strong, but fair warning: it was paprika-heavy. My friends with low spice tolerance were sweating bullets with every bite, holding on to the table like Jack with that door in Titanic.

The clams were fresh and juicy, but otherwise unremarkable.
Next up: a crowd-favourite classic — Nasi Goreng Belacan (RM29.90). Or as the menu puts it: Nasgor Mantan TAK Move On! (Belacan & Spicy). Whatever that means.
The presentation was certainly flawless. Plump, ruby-red prawns. Juicy cherry tomatoes. Crisp cucumber slices. It looked like a 10/10 dish — and it almost was.
The first bite was nothing short of heavenly. The rice was fluffy, well-seasoned, spicy, savoury, and packed with umami. Absolute delight. My only complaint: the belacan flavour was painfully subtle. It tasted more like regular Nasi Goreng Kampung. Perhaps they used sambal belacan rather than pure belacan for the paste?
But the real surprise was the generous amount of squid in the dish as I dug further into the mountain of rice. Fresh ones, mind you. I just wish they'd served it with a side of sambal belacan to really elevate the dish even more.
One thing that I could confirm about Ashhryshoshedap: a total nightmare for those with a more delicate palate. The flavours were a punch on the throat, though for someone like me, it was spot on. While I wasn't a fan of the Salted Egg Spaghetti, the Belacan Fried Rice definitely stole my heart (and stomach).
If you're planning to visit, make sure to never order one dish per each person unless you're a big eater.

In one of the numerous social media posts shared by the Fever showcasing the activities Sophie Cunningham, Natasha Howard, Sydney Colson, and Kelsey Mitchell endured during the trip, the group gave their honest opinions on popular food items. All four players tried items such as a dill pickle corn dog, a regular corn dog, a Hot Cheetos corn dog, corn on the cob, funnel cake, and deep-fried Oreos. After sampling and reviewing the various culinary concoctions, the group headed to the petting zoo, where they were swarmed by numerous baby goats seeking food from the Fever stars. One of the highlights of the animal encounter was a hungry goat nibbling on Colson's shorts in an attempt to get some of the feed. The team also shared a feature specifically focused on Kelsey Mitchell's experiences at the State Fair as she followed along with the rest of the three Fever stars. Michell was seen tasting the food and taking a spin on some of the rides, which ultimately tired out the seventh-year guard. In the Fever closed out their fun day at the Indiana State Fair by sharing behind-the-scenes footage of the numerous moments that didn't make the final cut in their previous videos and a few pictures of all four experiencing the festival's activities. The 2025 Indiana State Fair began on Friday, August 1, and runs until Sunday, August 17, at the Indiana State Fairgrounds & Event Center in Indianapolis. While the team had a blast during their day at the Indiana State Fair, they will need to collectively refocus on making a strong, late-season push towards the 2025 WNBA Playoffs by racking up wins as the regular season winds down. When I think of Wisma Cosway, I usually picture an almost-forgotten mall living in the shadow of Pavilion KL next door. But during a visit to Mama Lek — one of the still-operating eateries in the premises — I was immediately humbled. The place was buzzing with office workers, and the queue was so long my colleague and I had to leave for 2 hours before coming back. I'd never even heard of Mama Lek before, and neither had my friends. But it turns out the Thai beef noodle spot is no hidden amateur. It recently bagged the Thai SELECT Award from Thailand's Ministry of Commerce for the second year in a row. That's a big deal, meaning the flavours are as authentic as it gets. Best of all, it's Muslim-friendly! Not trying it would be like rejecting a glass of water in the middle of the dry desert. What I tried at Mama Lek As a first-timer at Mama Lek, I'll admit I approached the menu with the kind of enthusiasm usually reserved for buffet lines. One glance and I wanted a little bit of everything, so I went all in with the Signature Beef Mix (RM33.50) — their classic Thai beef noodles, lavishly loaded with all the trimmings. The bowl, far more imposing in person than in the photos, arrived filled with Sen Lek — thin, flat rice noodles — and an impressive parade of beef. But before even twirling my chopsticks, I had to taste the broth. Darker than your average beef soup thanks to a medley of Thai spices, it offered a depth of flavour that was clean yet layered, never muddy. In fact, it might just be one of the best beef broths I've encountered. Even my dining companion, who usually avoids beef, found herself returning for more sips. The noodles, too, were a pleasant surprise. I often find this type of noodles can lean towards being overly chewy, but here they struck the perfect balance — tender with just enough resistance to make each bite satisfying. Mali's Corner: Trying the 'best char kway teow in town since 1997' — 2 different versions! The beef selection was generous — silky tendon, chewy tripe, fresh beef slices, thick slabs of braised beef, and springy beef balls. My personal favourites were the gelatinous, almost luxurious tendon and the fresh slices that were smoky, tender, and melt-in-your-mouth soft. The tripe slices were, unfortunately, too tough for me to enjoy. The braised beef was quite a conflict for me — the fatty portions were delicious, but the thicker cuts less so — though all were impressively free from any gamey aftertaste. The beef balls were unremarkable, but the crispy garlic topping scattered across the bowl was an undeniable scene-stealer. For our second bowl, we ventured into new territory with the Isaan-style Tom Yum Braised Beef & Beef Ball Noodles (RM25.90) paired with glass noodles. Those expecting the familiar tangy, zesty tom yum found in Malaysian Thai restaurants might be caught off guard. This northern variation begins with the same beef broth, then layers in chilli oil and a touch of milk for richness. The beef was just as tender as before, but the chilli oil took charge of the flavour profile, adding a heat that, curiously, reminded me of bottled chilli sauce — likely due to the type of chillies used, as the taste echoed the flakes and oil in the condiment jars supplied on every table. Final thoughts It's easy to see why Mama Lek draws a steady stream of customers for its Thai beef noodle bowls and other hearty offerings. While the prices lean on the higher side, the generous portions more than justify the splurge. Between the two I tried, the signature Thai beef noodle easily stole the spotlight over the tom yum version. I also spotted dry noodles on the menu — and I'm already plotting a return visit to give them a try.
