Legacy body to investigate Narrow Water and M62 bombing atrocities
The Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information (ICRIR) will also investigate the 1974 M62 coach bombing in England, which killed nine soldiers and three civilians.
They are among the latest cases that have been accepted by the commission and are in the information recovery stage.
The Narrow Water atrocity occurred on August 27 1979, as a convoy of vehicles transported Parachute Regiment soldiers from Ballykinler barracks to Newry.
As they passed the old Narrow Water castle ruins, IRA terrorists remotely detonated the two bombs from a firing point across the Newry River in the Republic of Ireland.
Eighteen soldiers were killed, the highest death toll suffered by the Army in a single day during the Troubles.
There was also a 19th victim – Michael Hudson, who had been visiting the Republic of Ireland from London, who was killed by army gunfire across the river following the blasts.
Nobody was ever convicted over the attacks.
The incident came just hours after Lord Mountbatten, two members of his family and a Co Fermanagh teenager had been killed by the IRA in a boat bomb in Co Sligo.
The M62 coach bombing in West Yorkshire occurred on February 4 1974.
The coach was carrying soldiers and their families back to their Catterick base when an IRA bomb hidden in the luggage compartment of exploded.
Twelve people were killed, including two children aged five and two.
The ICRIR was created by the previous government's controversial Legacy Act and is headed by former Northern Ireland Lord Chief Justice Sir Declan Morgan.
Bereaved families, victims and certain public authorities can request the commission carry out an investigation into Troubles incidents.
While the Labour Government has said it will repeal and replace parts of the Act and reinstate inquests and civil cases, it is retaining the ICRIR.
Many bereaved families are unhappy with the retention of the commission and have vowed not to engage with it.
Victims have questioned the body's independence and its ability to uncover answers about Troubles crimes.
The commission has previously revealed that it is carrying out an investigation into the Guildford pub bombings of 1974 and has also been asked to investigate the Kingsmill massacre in Co Armagh in 1976.

Nigel Farage urges PM to appoint Reform peers to House of Lords
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has called on the prime minister to allow him to appoint peers to the House of Lords. In a letter to Sir Keir Starmer, Farage said he wanted "the democratic disparity" in the upper chamber to be addressed, suggesting it was unfair that parties with fewer MPs were represented. Reform has four MPs in the House of Commons and controls ten councils in England, but currently has no peers. Political appointments to the Lords are made at the discretion of the prime minister. Downing Street has been approached for comment. The House of Lords is a part of Parliament. It scrutinises the work of government and is independent from the House of Commons, where MPs sit. Members of the Lords are called peers. Like MPs, they scrutinise the work of government and recommend changes to proposed legislation. There are currently more than 800. In his letter, Farage said: "My party received over 4.1 million votes at the general election in July 2024. We have since won a large number of seats in local government, led the national opinion polls for many months and won the only by-election of this Parliament." Farage added that he was in favour of reforming the Lords, but that "the time has come to address the democratic disparity that exists in the upper house". He noted that the Green Party, Plaid Cymru and Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) have 13 peers between them. He also pointed out that the Liberal Democrats have 76 peers, despite winning fewer votes than Reform at the previous election. The Lib Dems currently hold 72 seats in the Commons, making them the third largest party after Labour and the Conservatives. "None of this holds water any longer given the seismic shifts that have taken place in British politics," Farage said. Farage said his request to appoint peers was "modest", but did not outline who he would nominate if given the opportunity to do so. In May, Reform made sweeping gains in local elections, as well as winning the Runcorn and Helsby by-election by just six votes. That success led Farage to claim that Reform UK was now the main opposition party. The prime minister is under no constitutional obligation to elevate members of opposition parties, but will often ask opposition leaders to nominate individuals for peerage. In December, Sir Keir appointed 30 new Labour peers, including his former chief of staff Sue Gray. The Conservatives appointed six new peers, while the Liberal Democrats appointed two. Newport City Council in drive Welsh speakers by 2050
Newport City Council has released new information following their promise to promote the growth of the Welsh Language by 2050. Newport City Council published a draft of their Welsh Language Annual Monitoring Report on June 30, which contained information on the popularity of the Welsh language in Newport between 2024 and 2025. Demonstrating their commitment to keeping the language alive, the council aims to normalise the Welsh language in areas where it is less spoken. This is a continuation of their five-year strategy, implemented in 2022, to increase the number of Welsh speakers within the area by 2027. The council's eventual goal is the 'Cymraeg 2050' strategy, which aims for one million Welsh speakers across the country by 2050. Data from the Annual Population Survey regarding the use of the Welsh language highlights Blaenau Gwent as the county with the lowest estimated number of Welsh speakers. In 2022, when the council's five-year strategy was put in place, Blaenau Gwent had an estimate of 11,200 people able to speak the language. Now in 2025, this number has decreased to around 9,500 Welsh speakers within the county. Despite this statistic, Blaenau Gwent Council states that it "remains fully committed to the Welsh Government's Cymraeg 2050 vision". The council plans on "working closely with neighbouring authorities to strengthen regional provision and continue to promote Welsh language use across our workforce and communities". Newport City Council's strategies aim to meet the requirements of the Welsh language legislation; to ensure that both the Welsh and English languages are equally endorsed. The council has a wide outreach to Welsh organisations and schools also committed to the survival of the language. Newport City Council have decided not to comment further outside of their published report, which aims to normalise the language instead of outdate it. The intention to provide bilingual services throughout the city aims to integrate the Welsh language into everyday life. The council has been developing the 'Cymraeg Gwaith'/'Work Welsh' programme for Welsh language skills to be built upon within the workplace, working with Menter Iaith Casnewydd and Coleg Gwent to encourage these changes. Administering Welsh language lessons in local schools as well as providing 'Welsh for Adults' schemes, the council has focused on working with Welsh services throughout the county to better support the growth of Newport's Welsh speakers. By encouraging a community effort towards a thriving Welsh language, Newport City Council is determined to provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn Welsh. Looking ahead to 2026, the report encourages increasing Welsh language skills in Newport through refining programmes like 'Cymraeg Gwaith', as well as engaging with minority ethnic communities to widen the outreach of the language. Building up to the Urdd Eisteddfod coming to Newport in 2027, the council is directing its focus towards working with local authorities to promote the language before this Welsh-driven festival makes its highly anticipated arrival.
