Who Is Zohran Mamdani, Indian-Origin Contesting New York Mayoral Polls
Indian-origin New York State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani has emerged as a surprise contender in the 2025 New York mayoral race. Representing Queens, the 33-year-old is now polling second, just behind front-runner and former Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Once relatively unknown, Mr Mamdani gained traction with strong fundraising, progressive policies, and viral social media content. Pitching himself as the candidate to beat Mr Cuomo, Mr Mamdani is focusing on housing, public transit, and economic justice to win over voters.
Who Is Zohran Mamdani?
Zohran Mamdani was born on October 18, 1991, in Kampala, Uganda. His father is Mahmood Mamdani, an Indian-born Ugandan Marxist scholar, and his mother is Mira Nair, an Indian-American filmmaker. At the age of five, Mr Mamdani moved with his family to Cape Town, South Africa. The family relocated to New York City when he was seven.
He attended the Bank Street School for Children and later graduated from Bronx High School of Science. Mr Mamdani studied at Bowdoin College and graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor's degree in Africana Studies. While in college, he co-founded the Students for Justice in Palestine chapter.
Zohran Mamdani began his political journey as a foreclosure prevention counsellor, later volunteering for local campaigns. These include roles with Ali Najmi, Khader El-Yateem, Ross Barkan, and Tiffany Caban. He joined the Democratic Socialists of America in 2017.
Zohran Mamdani won the 2020 Democratic primaries and took office in 2021 as New York State Assembly member for Queens' 36th District. He was re-elected unopposed in 2022 and 2024. A leading member of the Democratic Socialists of America, he serves on key committees and has sponsored 20 bills, three of which have become a law.
Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist inspired by Bernie Sanders, is in favour of free city bus rides, rent freezes, city-owned groceries, and a $30 minimum wage by 2030. He led efforts for fare-free buses and congestion pricing. On Israel-Palestine, he backs BDS, opposes illegal settlements, and calls for Gaza ceasefires, while rejecting antisemitism and supporting Israel's right to exist. He also champions anti-discrimination laws and protests funding cuts to gender-affirming care.
Zohran Mamdani became a naturalised American citizen in 2018. He married Syrian artist Rama Duwaji in 2025. A hip-hop enthusiast, Mr Mamdani released a single called ' Nani ' in 2019 under the stage name 'Mr Cardamom', featuring actress Madhur Jaffrey.

‘Investigate Tejashwi motorcade accident': CPI(M) general secretary
Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary M.A. Baby on Sunday (June 8, 2025) expressed concern over an accident involving the convoy of RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, and demanded that the incident be probed. A speeding truck hit two vehicles of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader's cavalcade in Bihar's Vaishali district early Saturday. While Mr. Yadav escaped unhurt, three security personnel were injured in the accident, police said. In a post on X, Baby said, "Deeply concerned about the accident involving Tejashwi Yadav's convoy in Vaishali. Relieved to hear that you are safe". The accident took place at around 12.30 am when Mr. Yadav's convoy had stopped for a tea break on the Patna-Muzaffarpur National Highway near Goraul.

All-party Parliamentary delegation led by Shashi Tharoor wraps up US visit
The all-party Parliamentary delegation wrapped up its visit to the US after meeting with US Vice President J D Vance and Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau among political and diplomatic leadership to drive home India's strong resolve to combat terrorism emanating from Pakistan. The delegation, led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor , was on the last leg of a multi-nation tour to brief key interlocutors about Operation Sindoor that India launched in retaliation of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives. The delegation was one of the seven multi-party delegations India had tasked to visit 33 global capitals to reach out to the international community to emphasise Pakistan's links to terrorism. On the last day of the delegation's scheduled meetings, the delegation oaid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at his statue opposite the Indian Embassy here. The team, which had arrived from India in New York on May 24, had travelled to Guyana, Panama, Colombia and Brazil before arriving in Washington for the last leg of the tour. India-China ties: Ambassador Feihong hopes of 'better and better' future; says work needed by both sides
Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong expressed optimism about the future of India-China ties on Sunday, describing the relationship as one rooted in a shared civilizational heritage spanning thousands of years. He hoped that relations between the two neighbours would become 'better and better' in the coming years. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a felicitation programme in Kolkata for Indian students proficient in Chinese, Feihong highlighted the historical depth of the bilateral relationship. He said, that the two countries have enjoyed these close ties for the majority of these thousands of years. When asked about the ongoing border issues, Feihong cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's past remarks, saying, 'Just like Prime Minister Modi said that in the thousands of years' relations between China and India, there was a very short time of differences between us.' 'We should look forward, look to the future, the young people today,' he stated, noting that youth were central to building stronger understanding. Praising the Indian students honoured at the event, Feihong said that the young generation is the hope for the two nations. "So we should believe that in the future our relationships will be better and better," and this is serrves as a reason to resolve the differences on both sides, he said, quoted by PTI. On the question of resolving border tensions, he stressed that work should be done by both sides and not only by the government but also by the think tanks, students and universities. Feihong recalled the 'very important consensus' reached between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping to promote 'good neighbourly relationships' and expressed confidence that 'new development will be taking shape in the coming time'. He also said he was hopeful that direct flights between India and China, suspended since 2020, would resume soon. Addressing the gathering, the envoy noted that India-China relations were at a 'critical stage' and highlighted that 2025 will mark the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries. He announced plans for a youth exchange delegation from India to visit several Chinese cities, including Beijing.
