City Hall keeping eyes on litterbugs at Centre Point

CITY Hall officers will be keeping their eyes peeled for litterbugs at Lorong Centre Point over the coming Wesak Day and Harvest Festival public holidays. This action follows a video posted on social media about the rubbish, including empty bottles and takeaway drinks, left behind around the brick planter boxes and on the covered walkway beside Centre Point Shopping Centre during the TYT's birthday-Hari Raya holiday long weekend last month. A spokesman for the agency's Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) said anyone caught disposing of their refuse indiscriminately risked being served with a compound for as much as RM500 under its Anti-Litter By-Laws 1984 (Amendment 2005). 'We are aware that some members of the public have the habit of gathering beneath the shelter to get some respite from the sun or rain,' he said. 'However, they should dispose of their garbage responsibly in bins placed near the planters and not leave the common area in a mess. If they fail to be more civic minded, when it comes to getting rid of their rubbish, and are witnessed littering, then we will not hesitate to take them to task.' He said City Hall had twice been contacted about the video, once at the beginning of April and then again last week. SWMD officers met with to staff of the management company (MC) for the shopping centre about what had transpired, shortly after the second report was lodged. A joint inspection was carried out of the covered walkway later that same day, according to him. 'We were made to understand that the video was taken early in the morning on the second day of the Hari Raya public holidays, before the cleaners for the shopping centre had reported to work.' He said the firm had engaged more than five workers to keep the common area around the building in order. 'The MC has agreed to get this team to step up its efforts to empty the bins and sweep up the refuse beneath the shelter on festive occasions. 'Our officers were told that, during public holidays, the cleaners would be asked to come in at least an hour before the shopping centre opened to clean up the walkway.' In the meantime, he said SWMD officers would monitor the goings-on around the building to try and catch any members of the public who disposed of their rubbish indiscriminately. He said those who repeatedly disregarded the agency's calls to refrain from littering in the common areas could wind up having legal action taken against them. 'They will become liable to a fine for as much as RM 10,000, if they are found guilty in court.' The spokesman said the agency collected a total of RM2,660 in the on-the-spot compounds from 133 litterbugs as part of its 'Ops Bersih' over the past two months. About RM1,540 was accrued in March and a further RM1,120 in April. He said the wrong-doers were spotted disposing of their rubbish, including cigarette butts, indiscriminately. 'A total of 142 smokers were caught between March and April. About 133 of them settled their compounds right away, while nine others elected to do this within the allotted grace-period.' Between four to five SWMD inspectors in plain clothes carried out 52 separate inspections between March 3 and April 28. These checks involved properties within the City Centre, as well as those in areas ranging from Telipok to Lido, according to him. He said those in Kota Kinabalu, included the shophouses in Kg Air, Sinsuran and Segama, as well as along Jalan Gaya, Jalan Tugu and Jalan Haji Yakub. 'The highest number of litterbugs was nabbed around Kg Air (38), followed by Sinsuran (19) and Segama (17).' When it came to areas outside the City limits, the spokesman said the SWMD team went to Damai Plaza, Foh Sang, the Bornion shophouses, Kingfisher Plaza, the Alam Mesra commercial centre, EG Mall, Manggatal Plaza, the Salut and the Commercial Centre. Checks were also made in the Tanjung Aru, Lido, Manggatal and Telipok townships. 'Tanjung Aru was the location with the most offenders, in this instance, with 14 litter-bugs caught in this area. 'This was followed by the Kingfisher Plaza, where 12 errant individuals were nabbed. Seven were taken to task around Manggatal Plaza, with five penalised at Damai Plaza.' The spokesman said City Hall had been coming down hard on littering violations in a bid to get the public to take a more active role in keeping the State Capital clean. 'It is not just up to our garbage collectors and street-sweepers to keep the commercial properties around our rating-area looking presentable and pleasing to the eye, especially to the many first time visitors from abroad. Telco woes in Ulu Kimanis village

A Papar handphone user has expressed her displeasure about poor coverage in one part of the district, while a Penampang employee is hoping that more care will be taken to look after the telecommunications installations near her office. The former shared her frustrations about the service outage at her village in the Ulu Kimanis area. The office-worker, on the other hand, was perturbed by a phone pole which was leaning over at a 45 degree angle off a section of Jalan Penampang. Both individuals provided Hotline with the pertinent details regarding their grievances. This information was forwarded to CelcomDigi and Telekom Malaysia (TM) Bhd. A CelcomDigi spokesperson said a preliminary check was made of the installation in the vicinity of the subscriber's village shortly after the company was contacted by the media. 'Our technical team was immediately deployed to assess the network signal in the customer's area,' the spokesperson said. 'The issue was resolved on the spot and the signal coverage was subsequently restored.' She said its personnel later confirmed that subscriber's handphone service was functioning as it should. 'Nevertheless, we will continue to monitor the network quality in the area to ensure consistent coverage.' GANESH of Papar said he was unable to use his handphone to make calls or access the Internet in Kg Toboon Minansar for days at a time. He said this had been going on for 'the past fortnight'. 'I can receive messages via whatsapp. However, I have noticed that there is a substantial delay between when they are first sent to me and when they appear on my phone,' he said. 'A friend who lives in Penampang sent me a request around 8.10pm on a recent Friday night. Her message only registered in my whatsapp about 45 minutes later.' He said his telecommunications services only functioned like normal when he reached the nearest main road. 'I have to make a two to three-minute drive from my house just to be able to use my handphone, which I feel is a ridiculous inconvenience.' Ganesh said he shared his handphone woes with several of his neighbours. Those among them, who also used CelcomDigi, expressed similar frustrations about the poor coverage, according to him. 'It is especially disappointing that the company's lines should malfunction like this. I fear that I will not be able to call for help if there is an emergency at home.' Meanwhile, TM staff have been asked to make periodic checks of the condition of its assets in Penampang, including those on the vegre along the main road leading to Donggongon. The firm recently dealt with a problem involving a pole which was bending towards the compound for a commercial premises dealing in hardware, plumbing and heating equipment at Mile 6 Jalan Penampang. A TM spokesman said the relevant section was alerted to what was happening in this part of the district. 'Our technicians confirmed that the pole was no longer upright a few days later,' he said. 'They set about repositioning the structure on the spot. A stay-wire was put in place to provide the pole with additional support.' He said the team also attended to any low-hanging cables in the area. 'We wanted to ensure that these lines did not droop down over the road shoulder or parking area for the commercial building in question.' EVAN, who works at the Penampang company, said his employers were worried about the potential property damage which they could incur if the pole were to fall. 'Several of our customers have already remarked that the pole seems to be edging closer and closer towards our compound,' he said. NYC mayor Adams kicks off re-election bid with jabs at Mamdani, vows to ‘fix what soapbox socialists only tweet about'
NEW YORK, June 27 — New York mayor Eric Adams launched his re-election campaign Thursday by taking direct aim at the credentials of his presumed Democratic opponent, Zohran Mamdani. 'It's a choice between a candidate with a blue collar and one with a suit and a silver spoon,' Adams, who was elected in 2021 as a Democrat but is running as an independent, told supporters outside City Hall. Adams, 64, is now facing off against 33-year-old Mamdani, a self-declared socialist who on Tuesday surprisingly beat out former governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic Party primary. Mamdani's win has yet to be certified, but Adams is already campaigning against him with accusations of empty idealism and false promises of 'giving everything to everyone for free.' 'They have a record of tweets. I have a record on these streets. A record of results. They talk about problems? I fix them. That's the difference. You don't lead this city from a soapbox,' Adams said of Mamdani. Mamdani's surprise win resonated as a political thunderclap, drawing the ire of US President Donald Trump and his collaborators, who accuse the left-leaning Democrat of being a radical extremist. In response Thursday, Mamdani said he launched his campaign to target Adams's corruption and his failure to address affordability. 'New Yorkers have been suffocated by a cost of living crisis and this mayor has taken almost every opportunity to exacerbate it, all while partnering with Donald Trump to tear our city apart,' Mamdani said. He promised to 'end this era of corruption, incompetence and the betrayal of working class New Yorkers.' Adams faced a series of major federal corruption charges, but they were dropped by the Justice Department after Trump took office in January. Mamdani and other New Yorkers have accused Adams of allowing the Trump administration to conduct immigration raids in exchange for burying the charges. Polling currently shows Mamdani ahead of Adams and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa for the November election. Ex-Sabah Water Director claims RM17 million not his
KOTA KINABALU (June 26): A Sessions Court here today heard that large amount of cash allegedly found by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in a former Sabah Water Department director's office pantry belonged to someone else. The first defence witness, Ag Mohd Tahir Mohd Talib, 63, told judge Abu Bakar Manat that most of the cash found in the pantry did not belong to him — only the amount inside a knapsack was his. Under cross-examination by deputy public prosecutor Mahadi Abdul Jumaat, Ag Mohd Tahir disagreed with the suggestion that he was the only person who had a key to the pantry. Mahadi: At the pantry and inside the knapsack, there was nothing belonging to anyone else. Agree? Ag Mohd Tahir: Only inside the knapsack was mine. Mahadi: In the pantry, there were items belonging to someone else? Ag Mohd Tahir: Yes. Mahadi: Can you tell the court what items belonged to someone else? Ag Mohd Tahir: A large amount of cash. He also agreed that no items in the knapsack belonged to someone else. Earlier, under examination-in-chief, Ag Mohd Tahir testified that the bulk of the RM20 million allegedly found in the pantry was already there when he entered the office. He claimed that from time to time he would keep his money there, especially when his brother came to request political donations. He maintained that only RM3 million of the RM20 million belonged to him. Ag Mohd Tahir is on trial alongside his wife Fauziah Hj Piut, 58, and former department deputy director Lim Lam Beng @ Lim Chee Hong, 69. He faces 11 charges, while Fauziah faces 19 charges under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUA). The couple also faces two joint charges under the same section, while Ag Mohd Tahir has an additional charge under Section 4(1)(a). The alleged offences were committed between October 4 and November 4, 2016, at various locations including Ag Mohd Tahir's office, a house in Sembulan, bank branches, a condominium in Sulaman, and a tower in Kuala Lumpur. Lim is alleged to have committed related offences between October 13 and November 8, 2016, at the MACC office in Jalan UMS and at a residence in Kota Kinabalu. Ag Mohd Tahir also testified that he was unaware his wife had 19 bank accounts totalling RM2.2 million. He disagreed with claims that MACC had seized 900 pieces of jewellery, initially valued at RM1.7 million in 2016, and later appraised at RM4.1 million in 2023. The prosecution is led by deputy public prosecutors Mahadi Abdul Jumaat, Haresh Prakash Somiah and Zander Lim. Ag Mohd Tahir and Fauziah are represented by Datuk Hj Ansari Abdullah and Erveana Ansari. Lim is defended by Datuk Tan Hock Chuan, Baldev Singh and Kelvin Wong. The trial resumes on July 23.
