Two dead in Spain fire as heatwave scorches Europe
Many places in Spain are experiencing temperatures exceeding 40 deg C.
BARCELONA - Firefighters in Spain have said they found two bodies after a blaze in the north-east of the country, which is in the midst of a brutal heatwave.
The heatwave across Europe this week broke high temperature records, caused the closure of schools and increased the risk of fire.
Authorities in Spain's Catalonia region confined about 14,000 people to their homes on July 1 due to two wildfires that broke out almost simultaneously in the province of Lerida.
In one of the blazes, near the city of Cosco, 'two people were found lifeless by firefighters', the fire and emergency service said in a statement.
The exact cause of the fire was unclear, but the service said the recent heat, dry conditions and strong winds caused by storms had increased the intensity of the flames.
Catalonia Regional President Salvador Illa said he was 'dismayed after learning of the death of two people as a result of the fire', in a post on X.
Hours earlier, police in the region had reported the death of a two-year-old boy after he was left in a parked car in the sun for several hours.

Spain is in the midst of an intense heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 40 deg C in many places and several heat records set for the month of June.
One person died in the southern city of Cordoba and another in Barcelona, both while doing road work on June 28, and likely victims of heatstroke.
According to scientists, extreme weather events, such as heatwaves and storms, are becoming more intense due to man-made climate change.
Tens of thousands of people have died in Europe during past heatwaves, prompting authorities to issue warnings for the old and young, the sick, and others vulnerable to what experts call a 'silent killer'. AFP

Combs, 55, has been held at the Metropolitan Detention Center since his September 2024 arrest. The facility, which has also held convicted sex traffickers like British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell and rhythm and blues singer R. Kelly, is a far cry from the luxurious Los Angeles and Miami mansions Combs called home until last year. After the verdict was read on Wednesday, Combs' lawyers asked U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian to release him on $1 million bond ahead of his sentencing, expected to take place by October. "I understand that you don't, that Mr. Combs does not want to go back to the MDC," the judge said. Combs shook his head. His hopes of returning to one of those homes and the embrace of his family after being cleared of the more serious charges were soon dashed. The judge denied Combs' request for bail, citing evidence of his violent behavior presented during the trial. In recent years, MDC has been plagued by persistent staffing shortages, power outages and maggots in inmates' food. Two weeks after Combs' arrest, prosecutors announced criminal charges against nine MDC inmates for crimes including assault, attempted murder and murder at the facility in the months before Combs arrived. The U.S. Bureau of Prisons, which operates MDC, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The bureau has said it takes its duty to protect inmates seriously. Man injures four people in attack on German train, police say

The ICE 91 train was carrying around 500 passengers from Hamburg in northern Germany to the Austrian capital Vienna. The man was arrested and the rail line shut down, a police statement said. "Today at around 1:55 p.m., (1155 GMT) a man injured several people with dangerous objects on an ICE train heading towards Vienna shortly before Strasskirchen," a statement from police in the southern state of Bavaria said.
