Oak Ridge man convicted of attempted voluntary manslaughter
Kevin Dwayne Steen Sr.'s conviction by a jury on June 30 followed a week-long trial, according to a news release from Anderson County District Attorney General Dave Clark's office. In addition to the attempted voluntary manslaughter charge, Steen was found guilty of:
Possession of weapon by a convicted felon (violent);
Reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon;
Tampering with evidence;
Maintaining a dwelling for drug use;
Possession of Schedule II drug (cocaine) of greater than .5 grams for resale; and
Possession of drug paraphernalia.
The charges stemmed from an incident on July 30, 2023, in which Steen was accused of having shot at a woman following an argument, the release stated. Following an investigation by the Oak Ridge Police Department, indictments were issued by an Anderson County grand jury on June 4, 2024. He was indicted on a charge of attempted first-degree murder in connecton to the shooting. Steen made bond but that bond was revoked on Dec. 9, 2024. He has been held in the Anderson County jail in Clinton since then.
His sentencing will take place in Anderson County Criminal Court at 1 p.m. Sept. 29.
Clark thanked the police department, Assistant District Attorney Kevin Allen, Criminal Court Judge Ryan M. Spitzer, the Anderson County Criminal Court staff and the jurors for their investigation and work. Assistant Victim Witness Coordinator Kaitlyn Norris helped in the prosecution of this case.
'We are grateful to the efforts of Assistant District Attorney Kevin J. Allen and all of those who helped bring justice to the victim in this case," Clark said in the news release.

On July 10, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department confirmed that Smith was charged with a misdemeanor for failure to yield the right of way resulting in death. The following day, Smith broke his silence on the tragedy in a statement via Instagram. 'Not a day has gone by that I haven't grieved, prayed and mourned for Ms. Dobbins and her family. My heart is broken in a way I've never experienced, and I still struggle to fully process the weight of it all,' he said. Child custody exchange leads to shooting: Sheriff
ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A shooting incident occurred during a child custody exchange in Rowan County, resulting in a victim being transported to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. According to the report, a patient was transported in a personally owned vehicle to Novant Hospital in Salisbury with apparent gunshot wounds. Information obtained at the hospital led deputies to determine that a shooting had taken place on Grants Creek Road. When deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered Melvin and Raynard Bookhart. Both were escorted outside of the crime scene and agreed to speak with investigators. Investigators discovered several firearms in the residence, along with ammunition. The shooting incident allegedly took place during a child custody exchange, at which time an altercation took place between Melvin Bookhart and the victim. At some point during the altercation, shots were fired, which resulted in the victim being struck multiple times. It was also discovered that both Melvin Bookhart and Raynard Bookhart were convicted felons. Both were charged with possession of a firearm by convicted felon, and Melvin was also charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious bodily injury. The victim was eventually transported from Novant Health Rowan Medical Center to Presbyterian Hospital for further treatment. At this time, the investigation is still ongoing. Early morning shooting in Minneapolis leaves man dead, police searching for shooter
Minneapolis police say a man is dead after a shooting early Saturday morning on the city's south side. According to police, officers were called to the 2400 block of 18th Avenue South just before 1 a.m. There, police say a man in his 20's was found with at least one life-threatening injury caused by gunfire. Despite being given aid, he died at Hennepin Healthcare. His name will be released later by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office. At this time, police believe an argument escalated to the shooting. However, the shooter is still on the loose. No information about the shooter has been provided as of this time. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara says the community is now "further traumatized" by more gun violence and is asking anyone with information to come forward by either contacting police or CrimeStoppers.
