Imphal: Nagas commemorated the 37th anniversary of the Operation Bluebird at the Maram Union Secretariat Complex in Tahamzan (Senapati), Manipur, on Wednesday. They marked the event as the dark day of July 9, 1987, when the Indian Army's counter-insurgency operation turned into what many regard as one of the worst cases of human rights violations in northeast.
The event was organised by the Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) and hosted by the Paomei Naha Union (PNU) with attendance from key Naga organisations, including the United Naga Council (UNC), Naga Students' Federation (NSF), Naga Women Union (NWU), Naga Peoples Organisation (NPO), ANSAM and other apex Naga tribal bodies, and well-wishers from across Naga districts.
Many speakers revisited the trauma of the incident, describing how in the early morning of July 9, 1987, Assam Rifles personnel descended upon Oinam village and over 30 surrounding villages, following the attack by the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM) on an Assam Rifles outpost that resulted in the killing of nine soldiers and looting of arms.
To recover the weapons, Operation Bluebird was unleashed and an unprecedented reign of terror followed. According to testimonies shared, 27 civilians were killed, three women raped, five sexually molested, two women forced to give birth in public view, 340 villagers were tortured, 96 arbitrarily arrested and detained for weeks, 125 houses burned, 172 dismantled, 10 churches desecrated and 6 schools destroyed.
NPMHR secretary general Neingulo Krome described the operation as 'a calculated and systemic assault on the civilian population'. "This brutality gave birth to the NPMHR as a cry for justice and a stand for the dignity of the Naga people," Krome said and reminded the gathering that Operation Bluebird was not just an isolated military crackdown but a historical wound that continues to fester.
The operation, carried out under the draconian provisions of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (
AFSPA
), has since become a case study in extrajudicial killings, torture and impunity.

France's Macron says Trump wants to achieve ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia at upcoming Alaska summit
French President Emmanuel Macron says U.S. President Donald Trump was 'very clear' in a meeting with European leaders that the U.S. wants to achieve a ceasefire at the summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. France's President Emmanuel Macron (L) and European Council President Antonio Costa, sitting next to France's Foreign Minister and France's Minister of Armed Forces (both unseen), attend a video conference on Ukraine from the Fort de Bregancon presidential holidays residence in Bormes-les-Mimosas, in southern France on August 13, 2025. (Photo by PHILIPPE MAGONI / POOL / AFP)(AFP) Speaking after the virtual meeting between Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other European leaders, Macron said Trump was prioritizing a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. He added that Trump had been clear that 'territorial issues relating to Ukraine ... will only be negotiated by the Ukrainian president.' Following his meeting with the Russian leader, Trump will also 'seek a future trilateral meeting' — one involving Trump, Putin and Zelenskyy, Macron said. 'I think that's a very important point in this regard. And we hope that it can be held in Europe, in a neutral country that is acceptable to all parties,' Macron said. Zelenskyy had 'constructive' discussion with Trump European leaders and Zelenskyy had a 'constructive' discussion with U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday, two days ahead of Trump's planned meeting in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said. Speaking alongside Zelenskyy, Merz said after the videoconference that 'important decisions' could be made in Anchorage, but stressed that 'fundamental European and Ukrainian security interests must be protected' at the meeting. Merz convened the virtual meetings in an attempt to make sure European and Ukraine's leaders are heard ahead of the summit, where Trump and Putin are expected to discuss a path toward ending Moscow's war in Ukraine. Zelenskyy and the Europeans have been sidelined from that summit. German government spokesperson Steffen Meyer said the intention of Wednesday's meetings was to 'make clear the position of the Europeans.' Zelenskyy is due to meet with European leaders first, in preparation for a virtual call with Trump and Vice President JD Vance about an hour later. A call among leaders of countries involved in the 'coalition of the willing' — those who are prepared to help police any future peace agreement between Moscow and Kyiv — will take place last. The Ukrainian leader on Wednesday said his government has had over 30 conversations with partners ahead of the summit in Alaska, but reiterated his doubt that Putin would negotiate in good faith. Writing on his official Telegram channel, Zelenskyy said there was 'currently no sign that the Russians are preparing to end the war,' and urged Ukraine's partners in the United States and Europe to coordinate efforts and "force Russia to peace.' "Pressure must be applied on Russia for an honest peace. We must take the experience of Ukraine and our partners to prevent deception by Russia,' Zelenskyy said.

Dalit man attacked for sporting moustache, beard
Rajkot: A 27-year-old Dalit man was allegedly beaten up and subjected to casteist slurs by five people from the upper caste community in a village of Junagadh district, reportedly for sporting a moustache and a beard. The incident took place on Aug 11 in Vajli village of Visavadar taluka and came to light after the victim, Sagar Makwana, lodged a complaint with the Visavadar police station on Tuesday. Makwana's father-in-law was seriously injured in the attack. In the complaint lodged from his bed in the Junagadh Civil Hospital, Makwana named Shailesh Jebaliya, Lalo Bhupat Kathi Darbar, and three unidentified men. According to case details, Makwana, who resides in Manganath Pipli village, was towing his motorcycle after the vehicle broke down. As he was dragging the bike, Jebaliya and Bhupat confronted him, expressing their anger at him sporting a moustache and beard. They started hurling casteist abuses at him and warned him not to sport a look like people from the upper caste community, the FIR states. As the confrontation escalated and the three started beating him, Makwana managed to escape and reach his father-in-law Jivan Karsan's house, which was close by. Karsan advised that they talk to Jebaliya as he lived in the same village and resolve the issue. When they approached Jebaliya, Bhupat reached there in a car with three others. The five subjected the two men to casteist abuse and then assaulted them. As locals gathered at the spot, the assailants fled the scene. Villagers rushed the injured duo to the hospital, where Karsan's condition is said to be serious. Assistant superintendent of police (Visavadar) Rohit Kumar said, "The accused live in the same village as that of the complainant's father-in-law. A team has been formed to apprehend them, and they will be arrested soon. Makwana is a farm labourer." Police have registered a case under BNS sections of assault, unlawful assembly, rioting, and others, along with relevant provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
