Kuching man caught with kiddie porn on smartphone fined RM5,000

KUCHING (June 10): The Magistrates' Court here today fined a 42-year-old man RM5,000 in default 12 months' imprisonment for possessing obscene materials on his smartphone.
Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan convicted Terence Sim on his own guilty plea to a charge framed under Section 292(a) of the Penal Code.
The Section provides for a penalty of imprisonment for up to three years in prison, or a fine, or both upon conviction.
Sim was charged with committing the offence on Jan 27 at approximately 12.30pm at a house here.
According to the facts of the case, police conducted an inspection of Sim following information received concerning the possession of child pornography.
The investigation confirmed that such content was found on his smartphone.
Sim was subsequently arrested and his smartphone, together with the SIM card, was seized by the authorities.
As the device was in his possession at the time of the inspection, the court held that he had committed an offence punishable under Section 292(a) of the Penal Code.

RM193,000 gone: Woman pensioner falls victim to phone scam
CHUKAI: A pensioner was poorer by RM193,000 after falling victim to a phone scam syndicate. Kemaman police chief Supt Mohd Razi Rosli said on May 25, a 63-year-old woman (victim) received a phone call from a suspect impersonating an agent from Takaful Malaysia. He said the suspect claimed the victim had filed a false insurance claim, which could lead to her being fined and imprisoned. 'The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code,' he added.

Norjuma fined RM4,800 for damaging condominium boom gate, CCTV
KUALA LUMPUR: Former television personality Norjuma Habib Mohamed was fined RM4,800 by the Magistrate's Court here today after pleading guilty to two counts of mischief by damaging a boom gate and a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera at a condominium, two years ago. Magistrate Farah Nabihah Muhamad Dan meted out the punishment after Norjuma, 45, changed her plea to guilty today and ordered her to serve five months in prison if she failed to pay the fine. Norjuma paid the fine. She was charged with committing mischief by damaging a boom gate and the CCTV belonging to the Sastra U-Thant Condominium, Wangsa Maju here at 7.44 pm and 7.45 pm on July 28, 2023, causing a total loss of RM4,700. The charges were framed under Section 427 of the Penal Code which provides for a minimum prison sentence of one year and a maximum of five years or a fine or both, if convicted. Deputy Public Prosecutor Amritpreet Kaur Randhawa urged the court to impose a proportionate sentence, considering the losses incurred by the condominium. However, lawyer Faiz Kamal Jaafar, representing Norjuma, requested a fine instead, on the grounds that his client's unemployment and remorse. 'My client is currently pursuing her studies at a local higher education institution (IPT) and is financially supported by her father, a government pensioner,' he stated.
