MCE Calls for Confronting Hate, intolerance

The Muslim Council of Elders, chaired by Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, affirms that combating hate speech, racism, intolerance, and discrimination is a moral, religious, and humanitarian imperative—especially in light of the growing global rise in violence, incitement, and social polarization, all of which pose a serious threat to communal harmony and human coexistence.
In a statement issued on the occasion of the International Day for Countering Hate Speech, observed annually on June 18, the Council warned of the dangers of turning a blind eye to verbal incitement, racist practices, and exclusionary rhetoric—particularly within digital and media spaces—which fuel hatred and resentment and create fertile ground for extremism and violence. The Council stressed the urgent need to enact binding legislation to curb such harmful discourse.
The statement emphasized that Islamic law forbids anything that incites division, hatred, or discord. As the Qur'an states: 'And tell My ˹believing˺ servants to say what is best' [Qur'an 17:53], and as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught: 'A kind word is charity.' Islam calls on its followers to uphold the values of compassion, mutual respect, and tolerance; to embrace diversity and pluralism; and to strengthen the principles of human fraternity—values that form the true foundation of peace and stability in societies and nations.
The Muslim Council of Elders continues to lead efforts to promote dialogue, peaceful coexistence, and mutual respect through several pioneering initiatives, including East-West Dialogue, Intra-Islamic Dialogue, the International Peace Convoys, and the Emerging Peacemakers Forum, among others.
The Document on Human Fraternity, signed in Abu Dhabi in 2019 by Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, and the late Pope Francis of the Catholic Church, clearly states that religions have never been a source of war, conflict, hatred, or extremism.
Instead, it calls for an end to the misuse of religion to incite hatred, violence, extremism, and blind fanaticism, and urges all people of faith and goodwill to work together in spreading the values of tolerance, coexistence, and peace.

CAIRO – 18 June 2025: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Badr Abdelatty stressed on Wednesday that diplomacy and political solutions remain the only viable path to address mounting tensions in the Middle East, warning against further escalation that could plunge the region into chaos. In a phone call with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Abdelatty underscored the urgency of achieving an immediate ceasefire and returning to negotiations as the sole route toward a sustainable agreement on Iran's nuclear program. The two ministers discussed bilateral relations and the latest developments in the Middle East. Both expressed satisfaction with the steady progress in Egyptian-Chinese ties in recent years and affirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation in various sectors for mutual benefit. Regionally, Abdelatty briefed Wang on Egypt's efforts to defuse tensions between Iran and Israel and prevent the conflict from expanding further across the region, warning of severe consequences for regional security and stability. Wang welcomed Egypt's stance, noting the strong alignment between Beijing and Cairo on the issue. He praised a joint statement issued on June 16 by 24 Arab and Islamic countries, initiated by Egypt, which called for an immediate ceasefire and the resumption of talks as the only way to reach a lasting agreement on Iran's nuclear file.

Egypt's Foreign Minister discusses Mideast de-escalation with China FM, EU Parliament President
Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held separate phone calls on Wednesday with his Chinese counterpart and the president of the European Parliament to discuss efforts to de-escalate Middle East tensions and address key bilateral matters, including the final approval of a major EU aid package for Cairo. In both calls, Abdelatty stressed the urgent need for a return to negotiations on the Iranian nuclear programme and outlined Egypt's diplomatic push to contain a wider regional conflict following the recent military escalation between Israel and Iran. During his call with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday, Abdelatty warned of 'grave consequences for the security and stability of the region,' stressing that there was no alternative to diplomatic and political solutions. He emphasised the need for an immediate ceasefire and a return to negotiations as 'the only way to reach a sustainable agreement on the Iranian nuclear programme'. The Egyptian minister conveyed a similar message in his call with the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, briefing her on Egypt's recent diplomatic contacts aimed at de-escalation. China's foreign minister affirmed that the Egyptian and Chinese positions were aligned and praised a joint statement initiated by Egypt on 16 June from 24 Arab and Islamic countries that called for a ceasefire and a swift return to nuclear talks. The two ministers also expressed satisfaction with the recent development of bilateral relations. The call with the EU Parliament president followed the parliament's final approval of the second tranche of a €4bn macro-financial support package for Egypt. Abdel-Aty expressed his appreciation for the decision, stating it reflected the EU's esteem for its strategic partnership with Egypt. For her part, Metsola praised Egypt's 'balanced role' amid the regional turmoil and highlighted her high regard for the Egyptian President's 'wise leadership'. ICESCO, Malaysia Discuss Partnership for Inclusive, Sustainable Education
Mohamed Mandour As part of his participation in the annual ASEAN Education Ministers Meeting, Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, Director-General of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), held a bilateral meeting with Dr. Fadhlina Sidek, Malaysia's Minister of Education. The meeting focused on exploring ways to enhance cooperation between the two sides in the fields of education, innovation, and heritage preservation. Her Excellency the Minister presented key initiatives of the Malaysian Ministry of Education, which have made the country's education system a comprehensive model for achieving the fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 4). She noted that education in Malaysia is guided by a holistic vision that values quality, equity, and sustainability. For his part, Dr. AlMalik commended Malaysia's educational experience and stressed the importance of strengthening international partnerships to achieve inclusive education for all. He also highlighted ICESCO's initiatives in this regard, including its ongoing cooperation with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in support of the international PISA assessments. Dr. AlMalik invited Dr. Sidek to participate in the third Ministerial Conference on PISA, which will be organized by ICESCO in Samarkand in November 2025, and is considered an important platform for exchanging expertise and encouraging educational policy reform in Member States. The meeting also touched on the Greening Education initiative, launched by ICESCO in collaboration with the University of Cambridge, which aims to develop long-term strategic visions in the field of education. Dr. AlMalik also underscored the importance of integrating values of peace into school curricula and embedding them into the educational policies of Member States. The two sides also discussed the issue of girls' education in Afghanistan.
