Nimisha Priya case takes dark turn as brother of Yemeni victim accuses mediator of financial misconduct
Mr. Mahdi alleged that Mr. Jerome misrepresented himself as a lawyer and had collected donations, including $40,000 raised through a crowd funding, without the involvement or knowledge of the victim's family in Yemen. Mr. Mahdi challenged Mr. Jerome to disprove his allegation.
'After the (Yemeni) President gave the green light for the execution, I met him (Mr. Jerome) in Sanaa, and he greeted me with a broad smile, saying 'Congratulations',' said Mr. Mahdi in a Facebook post.
Mr. Mahdi also accused Mr. Jerome of trading on 'our spilled blood' under the banner of mediation. 'The truth will be revealed if he does not stop his deceitful narrative,' he warned.
Council dissociates from Jerome
The Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council, meanwhile, dissociated itself from Mr. Jerome.
According to Subhash Chandran K.R., the council's legal advisor, Mr. Jerome abandoned the group on December 28, 2024, soon after receiving $20,000 transferred through the embassy on December 27. 'His departure was apparently triggered by the council's scrutiny of his actions,' said Mr. Chandran.
Mr. Chandran said the action council distanced itself from Mr. Jerome, vice chairperson Deepa Joseph and member Babu John after they allegedly insulted the individuals handling the mediation efforts following the July 15 postponement of the execution by Yemeni authorities.
'They questioned the validity of the stay order and insulted Sunni leader Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar and Yemeni Sufi scholars involved in mediation, falsely claiming they were not part of it,' said Mr. Chandran.
The council offered its apologies to Talal Mahdi's family for the anguish caused by various persons involved. According to Mr. Chandran, both Nimisha Priya's and Talal Mahdi's families were victims of deception.
Meanwhile, Chandy Oommen, MLA, visited Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar in Kozhikode and thanked him for his intervention leading to the postponement of Nimisha Priya's execution scheduled for July 16. Mr. Oommen requested Mr. Aboobacker Musliar to continue his involvement and support for the safe release of Nimisha Priya.

Elderly man duped of ₹4.27 lakh in online coin sale scheme
A 74-year-old man from Ramnagar, Hyderabad was duped of ₹4.27 lakh in a total of 28 UPI transactions in a fake coin sale scheme. The scam unfolded after the victim came across a Facebook advertisement claiming that old coins could fetch crores in resale value. Intrigued by the offer, the man contacted a number listed in the advert and was approached by a person identifying himself as Manoj Kumar, along with several unidentified accomplices. The gang convinced the victim that his collection of coins was worth ₹72 lakh and began demanding payments under various pretexts including registration, coin verification, RBI clearance certificates, travel and accommodation and courier fee among others. The investigation revealed that over the span of six weeks, from February 14 to March 26, the man was made to transfer money through 28 UPI transactions. The total loss amounted to ₹4,27,590. Initially, the accused maintained contact, reassuring the victim that his payment would be processed soon. However, once the transfers were completed, they became evasive and eventually began threatening him when he demanded the promised amount. Left financially devastated after borrowing money from relatives to make the payments, the victim lodged a complaint with the cyber crime wing of the Hyderabad Police. A case was booked and an investigation is underway.

5 Civilians Killed In 'Terrorist' Attack In Iran, 3 Gunmen Then Shot Dead
Gunmen killed five civilians during a "terrorist attack" on a judiciary building in southeast Iran on Saturday before being killed themselves, state media reported. "Unknown gunmen attacked the judiciary centre in Zahedan," the capital of southeastern Sistan-Baluchistan province, the judiciary's Mizan Online said. The assailants threw a grenade into the building, Daliri said, killing several people inside, including a one-year-old baby and the child's mother. According to Iranian media, Jaish al-Adl (Arabic for "Army of Justice"), a Baloch jihadist group based in Pakistan but also active in Iran, claimed responsibility for the attack. Located about 1,200 kilometres (745 miles) southeast of the capital Tehran, the restive province shares a long border with Pakistan and Afghanistan. The area has been the scene of recurring clashes between Iranian security forces, including the IRGC, and rebels from the Baluch minority, radical Sunni groups, and drug traffickers. In one of the deadliest incidents in the region, ten police officers were killed in October in what authorities also described as a "terrorist" attack.
