Number of foreign workers with non-professional employment visas drop 21%

Korea Herald22-06-2025
The number of foreign workers arriving in South Korea with non-professional employment visas dropped 21 percent this year, according to government data Sunday, apparently hit by the nation's sluggish economic growth.
According to the Ministry of Employment and Labor, the number of foreign workers arriving here with E-9 visas under the Employment Permit System stood at 28,520 as of June 10, down 20.9 percent from the same period last year.
In particular, the number of foreign workers with E-9 visas employed in the manufacturing sector slipped 25.8 percent on-year to 21,443, the data showed.
A ministry official attributed weaker economic growth to the "decline in demand for foreign workforce."
The Bank of Korea has cut its outlook for South Korea's economic growth this year to 0.8 percent, citing sagging consumption and slowing export growth amid uncertainties stemming from Washington's tariff measures. (Yonhap)

S. Korea, Britain agree to accelerate talks to upgrade FTA

Senior diplomats of South Korea and Britain on Monday agreed to speed up negotiations to upgrade a bilateral free trade agreement as part of efforts to expand trade and investment, the foreign ministry said. Second Vice Foreign Minister Kim Jina and Catherine West, parliamentary under secretary of state for the Indo-Pacific at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office in Britain, reached the agreement during the Senior Economic Dialogue. During the talks, the two sides explored ways to expand cooperation in areas such as trading and investment, economic security, artificial intelligence and quantum technology, the defense industry and energy, the ministry said in a release. They also agreed to expedite talks to revise the FTA in line with the agreements made by President Lee Jae Myung and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit in Canada in June. Last month, trade delegations of the two countries held the fifth round of negotiations on easing regulations on product origins and introduced new rules in the areas of supply chains and digital trade. In addition, Seoul officials asked for the British government to "favorably review" its safeguard measures against homegrown steel products and an electric vehicle subsidy scheme to ensure fair competition for Korean companies, it noted. During the two-day stay, West will meet Second Deputy National Security Adviser Lim Woong-soon to discuss regional security and support for Ukraine, and visit the Demilitarized Zone separating the two Koreas and meet North Korean defectors, the British Embassy in Seoul said. Economic impact of defense projects by state agency estimated at 69.7b won

The economic impact of weapons systems developed by the Agency for Defense Development since its establishment was estimated at 69.7 billion won ($50.3 million), a report showed Monday. The amount was calculated based on the value of 303 weapons systems, including 146 deployed by the military, developed by the state-run institution since its establishment in 1970, according to the report published on the occasion of the ADD's 55th anniversary. Among the weapons systems developed by the ADD were the Cheongung-II medium-range surface-to-air missile system and the K9 self-propelled howitzer, which were the two most-exported products in terms of amount. Weapons systems researched and developed by the ADD accounted for 43 percent of South Korea's overseas defense exports, which totaled around 60 trillion won from 2008-2025, according to the report. South Korea's defense technologies were assessed to be the world's eighth most advanced as of last year, according to a separate government report. (Yonhap)

[Graphic News] Workers aged 50 and over outnumber 20s at major firms

Leading companies in South Korea have fewer employees in their 20s than those aged 50 or older on their payrolls, industry data showed, partly reflecting reduced hiring of young workers amid an economic slowdown. According to data from corporate tracker Leaders Index, the share of 20-something employees at the 124 top companies by sales was recorded at 19.8 percent as of the end of 2024, down 1.2 percentage points from a year earlier. In contrast, the proportion of workers aged 50 or older reached 20.1 percent, up 0.6 percentage point from the previous year. It marked the first time since 2015, when Leaders Index started compiling related data, that workers in their 20s have been outnumbered by those aged 50 and above. The ratio of workers under 30 also fell below 20 percent for the first time. An official at Leaders Index said that many industries have reduced new hiring due to sluggish economic conditions, while older employees are also delaying retirement. (Yonhap)
