Glasgow is failing its music fans with shambolic public transport

There is something magical about the inclusivity of the event and it is quite honestly the most incredible music festival I have ever encountered. And it's accessible. Across Paris and the wider Île-de-France region, a special transport ticket was available for just €4.20 (around £3.50) that gave commuters unlimited access to trains, buses, trams and the Metro. Select Metro and RER (express suburban trains) were open all night to help revellers get between concerts and home safely. Oh, and did I mention every gig is free? The night-long celebration of music put Glasgow to shame.
At least ScotRail decided to put on some extra late-night services to shuttle punters back to Glasgow Central after the gig. This is a nice step up considering the absolute shambles that the national rail operator caused TRNSMT-goers last summer. Tens of thousands of festival attendees were stranded on the last night of the festival (Sunday) at Glasgow Green thanks to ScotRail refusing to extend services beyond 6pm amid a dispute with workers over pay.
Oh, and shocker, the Subway was not operating after 6pm either. The only time Glaswegians get a late Sunday Subway service is during the annual Christmas consumer frenzy. Our transport bosses appear to prioritise shopping over the consumption of music and cultural events.
Music fans and parents of young TRNSMT attendees were rightly furious at either being stranded at the event or missing the big name acts they paid to see just to get home. Around 50,000 people attend each day of TRNSMT, many of whom are teenagers as the festival is open to those aged 16 and over.
Those who had parents or guardians to pick them up were lucky, but many were stuck for a safe way to return home because of the lack of transport. TRNSMT is Scotland's largest music festival and people could not reasonably get home from it last year. Embarassing. (At the time of writing, ScotRail has remained tight-lipped about whether the firm will increase or extend its services for the TRNSMT festival, which takes place from July 11 to 13 this year.)
It sends a message that political elites and transport chiefs do not place value on large scale music events. It seems like any event where people, especially young people, gather to enjoy themselves is something that authorities need to turn a blind eye to rather than accommodate.
In Paris, experiencing the marriage of a comprehensive, integrated public transport system with a public, city-wide music celebration was both inspiring and bittersweet. Public transport and big events are interwoven. Huge numbers of people congregating in the same place need to be able to get to and from their destination safely, effectively, and efficiently. The local authority and the Scottish Government have a duty to people to ensure that this is a reality. The public has a right to have a good time.
La Fête de la Musique, or World Music Day, was founded in 1982 by Jack Lang, then France's Minister for Culture. Inspired by musician Joel Cohen to create a large-scale public music celebration. The idea was 'music everywhere, concerts nowhere' – it is an inherently public event. And even better, it's fun. Even though it was hatched from a government department. The eighties weren't that long ago, and this is proof that politicians do not need to be so dull and serious all the time. With a little bit of creativity and motivation, we can have public events that people of all ages want to get involved in.
With understandably tight local authority budgets, politicians need to be inventive. Imagine if Glasgow City Council could drum up this kind excitement for a grassroots, citywide music festival? After all, this is a big year for the city. But alas. We are stuck with poor public transport to pricey and privatised music festivals. Though I am sure we will see some hot pink Glasgow 850 posters slapped around TRNSMT next month.
As an inherently free event, both to attend and participate in, the government in Paris does not directly bear the cost of La Fête de la Musique. They provide logistical support in terms of subsidized public transport and policing, but the focus is a spirit of collaboration and citizen-centred celebration.
It is about the political will to make something like this happen. To see music bringing people together to let their hair down in civic spaces as a positive thing, rather than something to clutch pearls at. And if its not something the city is willing to provide for Glaswegians, at least make sure they have an affordable, reliable way to get home from the music events that are happening this summer.
Which is the UNESCO City of Music, Glasgow or Paris? If you were to pose this question on a game show – wah-WAH. Paris is incorrect. It's Glasgow. So why are failing our music fans? It is utterly mortifying.

Charles Bronson has become godfather to a six-year-old girl whose mum is campaigning for the long-serving prisoner's release. The notorious inmate has struck up a relationship with Maisie Mcneice and her daughter Angel, who have been in regular contact with him. Maisie, 25, from Primrose Hill, north London, is gathering support for his release and is organising a show displaying his artwork. She talks to the 72-year-old every day on the phone and feels she can trust him to look out for Angel, who has also exchanged letters with Bronson. Maisie said: 'They talk to each other all the time on the phone and he adores Angel. 'They've always had a good relationship, he sends her letters and art and she's sent him letters and her own art as well. 'They've always had a nice little relationship and I know I can trust Charlie completely.' Bronson, who has changed his name to Charles Salvador, left Maisie a voicemail saying 'I take it very, very seriously being a godparent' and he is going to take Angel 'to some lovely places' when he is released. He describes Maisie – who has visited Bronson over the past year – as a 'lovely' person who makes up for 'all the pain and misery' in the world. 'Charlie is thrilled at becoming Angel's godfather, it's not just something that he is putting his name to, he is taking it seriously,' Maisie said. Bronson has spent 51 years in prison after first being jailed for armed robbery, before having his term repeatedly extended for attacks on prison staff and inmates. He has taken 11 people hostage. However the admin worker wants the art show in London to reflect the 'positives' in Bronson's life, from his childhood up to the present. The former bare knuckle fighter, who is being held at HMP Woodhill in Buckinghamshire, is preparing for a ninth parole hearing which is due to take place in October. He is one of the UK's longest-serving prisoners. In September 2024, he told Metro that 'my soul is good' and 'I've got no regrets' as he made the case for his release. He said: 'The people outside will go, oh, Charlie, never get out. 'He doesn't want to get out. Look what he's done there. 'Well, let me tell you something – I haven't done nothing bad for the last nearly 10 years. I've practically been a model prisoner. 'And that's down to my art. And I'm bloody proud of it.' Maisie has started a petition to grant Bronson his freedom, believing his long sentence is not 'necessary or justifiable.' Her family knew Bronson's family from Luton, with Maisie's mum initiating contact before her daughter began visiting and speaking on the phone. 'I think he deserves a chance which no one has given him for so long,' Maisie said. Former Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain has made headlines this week after vowing that she will 'not be grateful' following her TV show being axed by the BBC. Earlier this month, the 40-year-old star shared that the broadcaster would not be commissioning another cookery show with her, despite a 10-year working relationship. At the time, she thanked fans for 'being on this journey with [her]' andadmitted that being dropped by the Beeb made her reassess 'where [she] wants to be'. However, following the BBC's announcement on the decision, Nadiya issued some fresh thoughts on the news, namely that as a Muslim woman, she isn't always supported by the industry. The Bake Off winner's comments drew messages of support, with the likes of TV presenter Fearne Cotton leaving a string of red hearts beneath her post on Instagram. But taking a look at her career, what is the context of her relationship with the broadcaster and what could be next for the chef? The 40-year-old first rose to fame after winning Bake Off in 2015 and has since fronted several popular food and travel shows for the channel. The star defeated Ian Cumming and Tamal Ray to win the major prize in what was an extremely close competition. Many viewers said it was one of the best series and finals ever, with the speech Nadiya gave about believing in herself still a tear-jerking and moving moment to this day. At the time, the show aired on BBC One, and Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood were the judges. Meanwhile, Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins were the hosts of the baking competition. Since then, Nadiya has gone on to have one of the most successful post-Bake Off career out of any contestant to date and boasts 973,000 followers on Instagram. Since her 2015 win, Nadiya has become the most recognisable of the competition's winners, launching a series of cooking shows, TV appearances and cookbooks. These shows included Nadiya's Simple Spices, Nadiya's Everyday Baking, Nadiya's Cook Once, Eat Twice and more. Other projects she has worked on include the documentary The Chronicles Of Nadiya as well as the cookery series Nadiya's British Food Adventure and Nadiya's Family Favourites. Last year she revealed that she has not watched Bake Off since 2019 as the series has undergone so many changes, including the exit of presenters Mel and Sue as well as judge Mary Berry in 2016, following the show's move from BBC to Channel 4. . She told Heat: 'I don't watch Bake Off. I stopped watching it about five years ago as it has changed so much since I was on it. It's a different show now, but I do love that Alison Hammond is the host.' Explaining Nadiya's dismissal, a BBC spokesperson said: 'After several wonderful series we have made the difficult decision not to commission another cookery show with Nadiya Hussain at the moment.' The BBC did not rule out a future collaboration with the star, however, adding: 'Nadiya remains a much-valued part of the BBC family, and we look forward to working together on future projects.' 'Now, my whole life, as a child in an immigrant household, I used to think I had to be grateful all the time because I watched my family, always grateful. Grateful for being let in, grateful for having work, even if underpaid, grateful for safety, even if it meant silence. 'Always grateful, even when I feel tired, lonely, or disrespected. At first, gratitude felt right because it was instilled in me from a young age; it was all I saw,' she reflected. 'But after a while, it starts to get really heavy. Gratitude became something that I was expected to wear like a uniform. Anytime I voiced frustration or sadness or wanted more, I could feel the invisible pressure. 'Like, how dare you complain? Aren't you lucky just to be here? But here's what I've come to understand.' Nadiya went on to say firmly: 'I am allowed to feel more than just thankful. Oliver provided English language commentary for tourists on board the City Sightseeing Glasgow buses, which featured a picture of his face on the side of the vehicles. Four years after calls were made to remove Oliver from the City Sightseeing services, it seems that he has finally been dropped. Though the same sentence has been removed from the City Sightseeing information page, Visit Scotland's website still says "our English recorded commentary is provided by renowned historian Neil Oliver", suggesting that this removal has been done quietly. City Sightseeing Glasgow was urged to drop Oliver, who has narrated the service since 2012, following his comments on GB News regarding pandemic-era lockdowns and vaccines, and his remarks on a potential second independence referendum. Otto English, author of Fake History, told The National: "Given Neil Oliver's long journey into conspiracy and irrelevance, I'm simply flabbergasted that it didn't happen years ago. "I hope Glasgow gets the commentator it deserves in his place." He left his previous role as president for the National Trust for Scotland (NTS) amid a row over his expression of admiration for race-row historian David Starkey, though he claimed the decision to step down was due to the end of his three-year tenure. He faced backlash during his time with NTS for his support of the Union and describing a second independence referendum as 'cancerous'. Oliver was blasted by former Glasgow Kelvin MSP Sandra White for his Covid jibes during the pandemic, calling lockdowns the 'biggest mistake in world history' and saying he'd happily risk catching the virus. Given his fierce pro-Union stance, his authority to narrate historic tours of Glasgow was also called into question, considering that Glasgow voted Yes to the 2014 referendum. West Coast Motors, the firm who operate the City Sightseeing Glasgow buses, has been approached for comment.
