Feared gangland thug broke cop's nose during ‘disgraceful' attack

Gangland thug Hugh Boyce was jailed this week after he broke one cops nose and spat in the face of another during an orgy of violence.
Boyce, pictured here when we confronted him on the street in 2023 about an attack on the son of murdered gangster Malcolm McKeown, was ordered to serve ten months behind bars after the court was told he described his own behaviour as a 'disgraceful episode'.
Boyce is the former right-hand man of the murdered drugs kingpin McKeown sr but has a shocking number of violent convictions and has settled a number of scores against former gang rivals both inside and outside of jail.
Crime boss McKeown, whose brother Clifford was jailed for life for the murder of Catholic taxi driver Michael McGoldrick, was shot dead in a hail of bullets at a petrol station forecourt in Waringstown in 2019.

Boyce, with an address at Lakeview Meadow in Lurgan, also admitted making threats to damage property, breaching a restraining order and improper use of a telecommunications network to send 'a message or other matter that was grossly offensive.'
Following the admissions, a further charge of burglary with intent to cause damage was withdrawn by the prosecution.
The PPS lawyer told the court how occupant of a property on Hidden Terrace, Mountnorris, was contacted by her neighbour on 14 December last year, reporting that 'alarms were going off…and there was water coming from her roof space.'

Police arrived at the scene and they found Boyce 'hiding in the shed outside.'
When they tried to arrest him however, he 'becomes aggressive' and attacked the officers, breaking the nose of one constable and spitting in the face and mouth of another.
'He made threats that he would burn their houses out,' said the prosecutor, adding that during police interviews Boyce refused to answer questions.
Defence counsel told the court Boyce himself conceded 'it was a disgraceful episode' and further that given his record, 'he is no stranger to custody.'
District Judge Michael Ranaghan said it was his view the ABH 'is the headline offence' so imposing ten months jail on that charge, he ordered the other, lesser sentences to be served concurrently.
Back in 2019 when Boyce was jailed for two years for his role in a campaign of intimidation and arson attacks directed at police officers' houses and cars, he was named in court as second in command in Malcolm McKeown's mid-Ulster gang.

The campaign against cops and staff of a Banbridge hotel began in 2015 when McKeown's gang were refused entry to the hotel's nightclub but eventually, cops placed covert listening devices in a car of a fellow gang member and recorded Boyce discussing drug deals, plans to burn down a pub in Craigavon and about balaclavas, gloves, climbing over walls and petrol bombs.
Boyce was convicted of attacking McKeown's son Malcolm Jnr as he sat in his car at a petrol station in Lurgan.
He was approached by Boyce who had got out of a BMW X5 and proceeded to open McKeown's car door, immediately punching him in the face.
When he got out of the car, McKeown was kneed and punched once more by Boyce.
When the Sunday World confronted Boyce about that attack, he said: 'It's nothing to do with you. It happened yeah but it's all been dealt with in court already.'

Surviving member of Miami Showband massacre tells of guilt ahead of book launch

A surviving member of The Miami Showband massacre has said it took him five years to write a book on the heinous crime – saying he battled with survivor's guilt for many years after the attack. Des Lee and Stephen Travers were the only two members of the hit band who survived the horrific slaughter by members of a UVF loyalist paramilitary group on July 31, 1975. Singer Fran O'Toole, 29, 23-year-old Tony Geraghty and 23-year-old Brian McCoy were killed in the attack after the band were travelling back home to Dublin from a gig in the North. It later emerged that the bogus British army checkpoint outside Newry was made up of UDR soldiers and members of terrorist group, the UVF. Des has now launched his first book - My Saxophone Saved My Life: The Miami Showband Massacre and My Quest for Answers – where he details the night of the attack and who he believes is responsible for it. He told The Irish Mirror: "To be honest, it took about five years (to write it). It was hard to work on it. Every time I picked it up, it made me cry and I put it down because it was depressing. "But I realise, 'listen, you're coming up to a ripe old age and you didn't want to kick the bucket when the book is not finished'." Mr Lee added: "I don't want people to think the book is depressing. The book is all about my life from when I was a young boy from Belfast and how we were treated as Catholics, back in the 50s. We got third class housing, third class education, third class jobs. "We were kicked into the ground. When you were a Catholic, you were just a piece of rubbish. I speak about that. "But there's a lot of comedy and humour in it, there's a lot of tear jerks. I think anyone who buys the book will have a wonderful read. "But I want people to know that the guy who organised the Miami massacre was the top guy in the British army. A guy called Captain Robert Nairac. He was the man who organised the weaponry, the uniforms, the bomb, the vehicles. Absolutely everything. "I want people to know all about this man, this man was evil and the British government to this day denies he was there on the night, but we have proof that he was there." The Miami Showband Mr Lee said that the night of the Miami Showband massacre will never leave him. "It never will till the day I die. I wake up every morning – there's photographs of Fran O'Toole in my bedroom, there's photographs of the guys from the band in my lounge, so I live with this 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year and I wouldn't have it any other way. "They were my three brothers; they will always be remembered. I want to keep their names alive. They were purely musicians." He added that he suffered with survivor's guilt for many years after the attack. "I felt sorry for the O'Toole, the Geraghty's and the McCoy family. "We were targeted because we were the number one band in Ireland, and they wanted maximum publicity. They put the bomb in the van, tell us to get back in the van, head up to Dublin, the bomb explodes, we're all killed, there's no one to say any different. "We would be accused of carrying weapons for the IRA. Then there would've been difficulties between the Irish Government and the English Government. That is exactly what would've happened," he added. Former footballer Scott Capper jailed for wheelie on wrong side of road

Scott Capper's football career was ended by a serious leg injury in his teens, and he turned to drugs A talented former footballer jumped on a scrambler bike in front of a garda station, before driving off and doing wheelies on the wrong side of the road, a court heard. Scott Capper's football career was ended by a serious leg injury in his teens, and he turned to drugs. At one stage, Capper (31) was taking up to €500 worth of cocaine a day, a court previously heard. Judge David McHugh fined Capper €500, disqualified him from driving for five years and jailed him for five months. The defendant, with an address at Cappagh Green in Finglas, admitted uninsured and dangerous driving. Garda William Bowes told Blanchardstown District Court that he came out of Finglas garda station on April 21, 2024, and saw Capper climb onto a scrambler bike. Gda Bowes said Capper drove through a yield sign, and turned onto Barry Drive where he did a wheelie on the wrong side of the road. Gda Bowes said Capper was driving at high speed. On Barry Road, Gds Bowes said that Capper went through two roundabouts on the wrong side of the road, forcing other road users to get out of his way. The court heard that Capper has over 50 convictions, most recently in 2021 when he was jailed for two and a half years for stealing almost €50,000 in a cash box from a security worker. He also has previous convictions for uninsured and dangerous driving. Defence solicitor Simon Fleming said Capper grew up in the Finglas area and is one of seven children. Capper, who was not working, lived at home with his parents, Mr Fleming said. The court heard that Capper was in custody on the matters and Mr Fleming asked Judge McHugh to backdate the sentence to when his client first went into custody. Judge McHugh said he would backdate the sentence. A court previously heard that Capper was a promising young footballer but his career was ended by a ligament injury in his late teens and he started hanging around with the wrong people. Scott Capper was previously convicted for stealing €50,000 Today's News in 90 Seconds - July 28th
