Govt to review SST expansion for imported fruits, says Zahid

PETALING JAYA : The government will review the revision and expansion of the sales and service tax for imported fruits within the next month, following concerns raised by industry players.
Deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the government had taken note of the various views put forth and would reconsider the list of taxable items.
He said the matter would be brought to the Cabinet before a decision is made, taking into account the needs of lower-income citizens.
'Our country does not produce apples or mandarin oranges. Even though the SST is to protect the local fruit industry, we must understand that not all fruits can be produced here.
'I believe an adjustment will be made to the list of goods taxable by 5-10% under the SST. I am certain the finance and economy ministries are thoroughly studying the matter,' Utusan Malaysia reported him as saying.
He emphasised that the matter would still need the consideration of the Cabinet.
Previously, the finance ministry said the expansion of the SST from July 1, including a 5% rate on imported fruits, was strategically aimed at bolstering local agricultural demand and strengthening food security.
Treasury secretary-general Johan Mahmood Merican outlined the government's deliberate approach to differentiate between essential and non-essential goods under the expanded tax net.
He said the 5% SST on imported fruits served as a strategic nudge to consumers, encouraging the consumption of local alternatives and strengthening the nation's food security.
'Optional goods with alternatives are subject to 5% SST, but locally produced fruits are not subject to the sales tax,' said Johan.

Oil prices capped despite geopolitical conflict
TA Research has retained its 'neutral' view on the O&G sector. PETALING JAYA: Any further upside to the price premium of crude oil prices fuelled by the Iran-Israel conflict is constrained by ample spare capacity among Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its members (Opec) members as well as non-Opec suppliers, TA Research states in its oil and gas (O&G) sector report. It said global demand for energy also remains weaker due to slower economic activity and the increased use of electric vehicles. The research house added the geopolitical premium put on crude oil prices since the conflict erupted is more likely to be transient rather than transformative. 'The global oil supply backdrop remains relatively resilient despite the geopolitical turmoil. Opec, led by Saudi Arabia, holds sufficient spare production capacity to offset most short term disruptions from Iran,' it stated. TA Research added US shale producers continue to deliver robust output levels, averaging a steady 13.4 million barrels per day while other non-Opec producers like Brazil, Canada, and Guyana are also ramping up supply, contributing to a broader narrative of a well-supplied global market. While supply-side fears can generate temporary price rallies, the demand picture remains insufficiently supportive for a sustained oil bull cycle without further macroeconomic improvement, TA Research opined. 'While the war may add volatility, the probability of a sustained supply shock remains relatively low unless additional producers or infrastructure become targets,' it summarised. Hence, TA Research has maintained its average Brent crude oil price forecast of US$73 a barrel for 2025. 'We retain our 'neutral' view on the O&G sector, as we believe the risk-reward balance remains evenly poised. 'We reiterate our preference for oil and gas players with strong export linkages and robust cash generation, such as Pantech Group Holdings Bhd and MISC Bhd ,' the research house noted. It explained that MISC ('buy', target price: RM8.40) stands to benefit from increased demand for tanker freight and floating solutions, particularly as shipping markets remain volatile. Additionally, Pantech ('buy', target price: 96 sen), meanwhile, is well placed to ride on higher project flows for pipeline and industrial fittings, driven by infrastructure upgrades and intensified maintenance cycles in response to supply chain vulnerabilities. That said, TA Research said should diplomacy prevail and the war drums go quiet, it forecasts crude oil prices to correct to US$60 to US$65 a barrel level for the Brent contract. Furthermore, should there be complications in the Straits of Hormuz which disrupt supply lines out of the region, prices could spike to US$100 to US$120 a barrel levels.

Telegram complies with court order, ‘Edisi Siasat' blocked

(Pexels pic) PETALING JAYA : Online messaging platform Telegram has complied with a High Court order to stop the spread of offensive material by purported whistleblower channel 'Edisi Siasat'. Checks on Telegram showed that Edisi Siasat has been blocked this evening, with users notified that the channel 'can't be displayed because it violated local laws'. FMT was made to understand that this was a result of Telegram complying with the interim injunction issued by the High Court. Edisi Siasat has, however, already set up a second channel on Telegram. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had filed a civil suit against Telegram and two of its channels for allegedly spreading harmful content that could erode trust in public institutions and threaten social order. The MCMC said Edisi Siasat and Edisi Khas were found to have published content that violated provisions under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Both Edisi Siasat and Edisi Khas were anonymous Telegram channels known for publishing whistleblower-style allegations, particularly targeting public institutions and enforcement agencies. Despite being unofficial, their posts often gain traction and trigger public debates. The MCMC reminded social media platforms that they have a duty to ensure that the content on their platforms did not violate Malaysian laws, adding that it would not hesitate to take similar action against other providers.
