Shortage of auto tippers hits garbage collection in H-D

Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation
(HDMC) faces significant challenges in managing
door-to-door waste collection
due to a severe shortage of
auto tippers
. Currently, the corporation operates with only 282 auto tippers against the required 420 units.
The situation worsens as approximately 40 to 50 vehicles remain non-operational in garages due to technical issues, affecting the efficiency of waste collection services.To address this shortfall, HDMC finalised arrangements to acquire 66 additional auto tippers on hire.
These vehicles are expected to commence operations within the next two weeks, which should help improve the waste collection system across the twin cities.The shortage of auto tippers has severely affected waste collection in several areas of the twin cities. Residents have complained about irregular collection schedules and accumulation of waste in their neighbourhoods. The HDMC officials acknowledged these concerns and are working to address them promptly.Mayor Ramanna Badiger said the current door-to-door collection has issues in certain areas due to shortage of auto tippers. He said plans to hire 66 additional auto tippers to supplement the existing fleet of 282 vehicles, which will provide relief to several wards.The 66 outsourced auto tippers will come equipped with drivers and support staff. Additionally, he mentioned that tractors have been allocated to specific wards to facilitate
garbage collection
, which will help to streamline the waste collection process.The newly hired vehicles will be distributed across different zones based on population density and waste generation patterns.

Each auto tipper will be assigned specific routes and timings to ensure systematic coverage of all areas. The HDMC also plans to train the operators of these new vehicles in proper waste collection and segregation procedures.The corporation initiated repairs of the defunct auto tippers to bring them back into service.
The zonal offices received sufficient funding for the repair of auto tipper. Each office has been authorised to utilise up to Rs 2 lakh for repairing the auto tippers assigned to their respective wards.Local authorities expect these measures will significantly improve the
waste management
system in Hubballi-Dharwad. Regular reviews will be conducted to assess the effectiveness of these initiatives and make necessary adjustments.Srikant Pattar, a resident in Keshwapur, said the timing of the garbage collection poses a significant challenge for us. "Since the collection vehicle arrives in the afternoon when we are away at work, we are unable to hand over the waste. I kindly request that the waste be collected in the morning hours to ensure proper disposal," he said.
