Rosman's tactical tweaks elevate Pearly-Thinaah's game

National women's doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah in action against China's Jia Yifan-Zhang Shuxian in the semi-final match of Malaysian Masters at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil on Saturday. — IZZRAFIQ ALIAS/The Star PETALING JAYA: Tactical tweaks under coach Rosman Razak are slowly but surely elevating women's doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah's game. Rosman replaced Hoon Thien How as the women's doubles head coach in the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) last November and has been working hard to turn the national No. 1 pair into a more consistent duo. And the work is starting to pay dividends as Pearly-Thinaah made it into their first ever World Tour Super 1000 final in the Indonesian Open. The world No. 4 pair went down fighting 25-23, 12-21, 19-21 to China's world No. 1 Liu Shengshu-Tan Ning at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta yesterday but showed clear improvement after failing to even reach the last four in a Super 1000 tourney before this. Despite competing in their fourth straight tournament, Pearly-Thinaah managed to battle hard until the end against the formidable Chinese duo before losing by the narrowest of margins. The pair are also becoming more consistent and managed to keep up their intensity after capturing the Thailand Open title last month. Pearly-Thinaah made it into the Malaysian Masters semi-finals and Singapore Open quarter-finals before achieving the personal milestone in Indonesia. Rosman believes his charges' performance over the last four weeks has been all the more commendable as the pair have not let external issues distract them. Pearly-Thinaah face an uncertain future in BAM as their contracts expired last December and they are still yet to sign new deals. "A lot has happened over these past four weeks. Although, sometimes Pearly-Thinaah have not performed to their best but their willingness to try and adapt to tactical tweaks has brought a lot of positive changes," said Rosman. "Their communication on court has also been very good and helped them a lot especially when they have been under pressure. "We have been trying new strategies on court and while there have been plenty of positives, there is still room for improvement." Antonsen wins battle of the 'Istora Boys'

KUALA LUMPUR: Dane Anders Antonsen won the battle of the "Istora Boys" by beating Taiwanese veteran Chou Tien Chen to claim his first Indonesia Open crown in Jakarta today. Both were hugely popular among fans at the iconic Istora Senayan because of their amiable nature, and were fondly known as the "Istora Boys". World No. 3 Antonsen secured a 22-20, 21-14 win over world No. 7 Tien Chen in a 60-minute final. The Danish showman was delighted by his victory after being denied the title in the 2019 final by Tien Chen and by China's world No. 1 Shu Yu Qi last year. "I was taking painkillers and had to push hard. It's my third final and I wanted the title so badly," said Antonsen. "I don't know If I got this correctly... Terima kasih kerana support saya (Thank you for supporting me)." Antonsen pocketed US$101,500 (RM429,148) while Tien Chen took home US$49,300. Meanwhile Olympic champion An Se Young of South Korea proved that her defeat in the Singapore Open last week was a minor blip as she secured her second Indonesia Open crown. World No. 1 Se Young came from behind to beat China's world No. 2 Wang Zhi Yi, 13-21, 21-19, 21-15 in 81 minutes.

Pearly-Thinaah can walk with heads held high after agonising loss in final

PETALING JAYA: Women's doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah agonisingly missed out on the biggest title of their careers so far but they still had reasons to smile. PETALING JAYA: Women's doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah agonisingly missed out on the biggest title of their careers so far but they still had reasons to smile. The Malaysian duo battled valiantly against China's world No. 1 Liu Shengshu-Tan Ning before going down narrowly 25-23, 12-21, 19-21 in the Indonesian Open final at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta yesterday. Despite missing out on the title, the world No. 4 pair achieved several personal milestones. Pearly-Thinaah are expected to move up one rung to a career high No. 3 in the world after reaching their maiden World Tour Super 1000 final. The duo are set to overtake current world No. 3 Baek Ha-na-Lee So-hee from South Korea when the rankings list is officially updated tomorrow after the latter failed to defend their title in Indonesia. Pearly-Thinaah can also be proud of their efforts as they had never even made it to the last four of a Super 1000 tourney before their feat in Istora. In the final, the pair gave themselves hope of capturing the crown when they led 9-4 and 14-12 in the decider but could not hold on against their mighty opponents and heartbreakingly lost in an exhausting 87-minute battle. It was Pearly-Thinaah's eighth defeat to Shengshu-Tan Ning in 11 meetings. Pearly-Thinaah were playing in their fourth straight tournament but refused to blame their defeat on fatigue. "We are disappointed. Towards the end, I made two mistakes. I rushed a bit," Pearly told the Badminton World Federation (BWF). "This is what I still need to learn day by day, so I still need some time and I hope I can be better in the future. "All four of us were really tired and it was point by point towards the end. "Tiredness was not a big issue. I think it's the mindset. They were calmer than us while I made two silly mistakes. I need to learn from this''. On the positives from the match, Thinaah said: "I think the main positive is the support that we gave each other throughout the match. "We always tried to lift each other's spirits when we were leading and trailing." Pearly-Thinaah's best achievement previously was capturing the Super 750 French Open in 2022. After struggling with inconsistency in the past, the pair are slowly improving their form and growing in confidence. Pearly-Thinaah have reached three finals so far this year after triumphing in the Thailand Open last month and finishing runners-up in the Indonesian Masters in January. The duo also became the first Malaysians in the women's doubles to make it to the Indonesian Open final since Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty, who won the title in 2009. Pearly-Thinaah will next have a well-earned break from competitions before looking to build on their positive showings in the back-to-back Japan Open (July 15-20) and China Open (July 22-27).
