Israel kills 38 Palestinians in Gaza near food distribution centres, says health ministry
At least 38 Palestinians were killed on Monday in new shootings in areas of food distribution centres in the south of the Gaza Strip, the local Health Ministry said. Advertisement The toll was the deadliest yet in the near-daily shootings that have taken place as thousands of Palestinians move through Israeli military-controlled areas to reach food centres run by the private contractor Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a US-backed aid group bypassing the longstanding UN-led system in the tiny enclave. Two witnesses said Israeli troops opened fire early on Monday in an attempt to control the crowds. There was no immediate comment by the Israeli military. It has said in previous instances that troops fired warning shots at what it calls 'suspects' approaching their positions. Gaza's Health Ministry said most of the dead were trying to reach the GHF centre near the southern city of Rafah, although a few were on the roads to a newly opened hub on the outskirts of the nearby city of Khan Younis. Advertisement Two Palestinians trying to get food at the Rafah site, Heba Jouda and Mohammed Abed, told the Associated Press that Israeli forces fired on the crowds at around 4am at the Flag Roundabout. The roundabout, hundreds of metres from the GHF centre, has repeatedly been the scene of shootings.

Palestinian death toll surpasses 55,000 in ongoing Israel-Gaza war
The Palestinian death toll from the 20-month Israel-Gaza war has climbed past 55,000, the Gaza Health Ministry said on Wednesday. Advertisement The ministry does not distinguish between civilians and combatants, but has said that women and children make up more than half the dead. It's a grim milestone in the war that began with Hamas' attack into southern Israel on October 7, 2023, and shows no sign of ending. Israel says it only targets militants and blames civilian deaths on Hamas, accusing the militants of hiding among civilians because they operate in populated areas. The ministry says 55,104 people have been killed since the start of the war and 127,394 wounded. Many more are believed to be buried under the rubble or in areas that are inaccessible to local doctors. Israeli forces have destroyed vast areas of Gaza, displaced about 90 per cent of its population and in recent weeks have transformed more than half of the coastal territory into a military buffer zone that includes the now mostly uninhabited southern city of Rafah. Advertisement A 2½-month blockade imposed by Israel when it ended a ceasefire with Hamas raised fears of famine and was slightly eased in May. The launch of a new Israeli- and US-backed aid system has been marred by chaos and violence, and the UN says it has struggled to bring in food because of Israeli restrictions, a breakdown of law and order, and widespread looting.
