Alabama's ranking revealed in 2025 preseason AP Poll Top 25
Released on Monday afternoon, Alabama is ranked as the nation's No. 8 overall team in the preseason AP Poll. The Crimson Tide's Week 1 opponent, Florida State, was unranked, but did receive eight total votes.
Alabama is also the third-highest ranked SEC team in the 2025 preseason AP Poll, trailing only No. 1 Texas and No. 5 Georgia. Other SEC teams in the preseason AP Poll Top 25 include No. 9 LSU, No. 13 South Carolina, No. 15 Florida, No. 18 Oklahoma, No. 19 Texas A&M, No. 21 Ole Miss, and No. 24 Tennessee.
Missouri and Auburn both also received votes, but enter the season unranked.
The Crimson Tide are set to open the 2025 season on Saturday, Aug. 30 in Tallahassee, Florida against the Florida State Seminoles. Kickoff for the contest is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC.

Although the now-defending champion Ohio State Buckeyes finished the 2024 season as the No. 1 team, they have already been bumped from the top spot. As revealed in the latest AP Poll rankings, which have been taking place since 1936, the 60 journalists who vote to decide the rankings ended up bumping the Buckeyes to the No. 3 team in the country. This paved the way for a team that Ohio State actually beat last season to supplant them from being the best team in college football. AP Poll Announces New No. 1 College Football Team Although the Buckeyes got the best of them in their College Football Playoff Semifinal matchup, the Texas Longhorns were tabbed as college football's newest No. 1 team. The Longhorns narrowly edged out Penn State in what the AP reported was the closest vote since 1998. In addition to being atop the AP Poll, the Longhorns were also tabbed as the No. 1 team in the Coaches Poll this past week. Why Texas is the No. 1 Team in College Football Despite having a program record 12 players drafted during the 2025 NFL Draft, the Longhorns have been stockpiling on talent over the past few years. Not only is former No. 1 overall recruit, Arch Manning, taking over at quarterback, but he is also joined by a roster flooded with blue-chip recruits. The Longhorns have had a top-six class in each of the past four years, with the 2025 class coming in as the No. 1 class in the country. 2025: No. 1 Class 2024: No. 6 Class 2023: No. 3 Class 2022: No. 5 Class The Longhorns are also coming off back-to-back College Football Playoff appearances, making it to the semifinal round in each of the past two seasons. They also have the luxury of returning 61% of their production on defense from a season ago, indicating they have a chance to field yet another dominant unit. While it'll come down to more than just one player, many believed Manning could have led them to a title last season instead of Ewers, but now that he is at the helm, he will have the chance to do just that. Why Ohio State Isn't the No. 1 Team in College Football Similar to Texas, the Buckeyes sent a ton of players to the NFL, tying a program record with 14. However, while Ohio State ranks higher in returning production at No. 101 to Texas' 103, the biggest question surrounding the Buckeyes is their quarterback situation. With Will Howard off to the NFL, Ryan Day is choosing between redshirt freshman Julian Sayin and redshirt sophomore Lincoln Kienholz. Unlike Manning who started two games and also had a significant role down the stretch for Texas, neither Sayin and Kienholz played any critical snaps last season. Kienholz hasn't attempted a pass since 2023, while Sayin attempted just 12 in mop-up duty last season. Week 1 Clash Between Texas and Ohio State The No. 1 Longhorns will have to defend their ranking quickly into the season as they'll head to Columbus to take on the Buckeyes in Week 1. Both ESPN's "College GameDay," and Fox's "Big Noon Kickoff" will be in attendance for the No. 1 vs. No. 3 matchup. With the college football season kicking off on Aug. 23, fans were able to argue over new rankings on Monday, as the AP announced its preseason top 25 poll. As it has in the past, the SEC led the way with 10 teams in the rankings, including four teams featured in the top 10. The Big Ten featured six teams in the rankings, with three teams in the top 10, while the Big 12 had four teams in the rankings and the ACC had just three. Although there were four Big 12 teams in the rankings, one team that had a strong 2024 season not featured was Deion Sanders' Colorado Buffaloes. Despite coming off a 9-4 season in 2024, the Buffs lost two of the best players in college football in quarterback Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter. With them off to the NFL, the expectation around college football is for Colorado to take a step back; however, there was a bit of a surprising development when it comes to the Buffs. Unexpected Colorado AP Poll Development Despite losing both the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year (Sanders) and Heisman Trophy winner (Hunter), the Buffs were one of the teams to receive a vote. Joined by the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns, Colorado was just one of two teams to receive a single vote with programs such as Army (2), Pitt (3) and TCU (4) among others racking up more. Colorado's Transfer Portal Method Being Put to the Test According to ESPN, Colorado returns just 50% of its total production from a year ago, with the offensive side of the ball likely seeing plenty of new faces with just 44% of its production returning. The Buffs will be replacing their entire receiving corps, as LaJohntay Wester (Baltimore Ravens) and Jimmy Horn Jr. (Carolina Panthers) joined Hunter in being drafted, while Will Sheppard (Green Bay Packers) was signed as an undrafted free agent. Colorado is also expected to field just one returning starter on the offensive line in Jordan Seaton, as it brought in nine transfers and a couple more recruits. Colorado Can Continue Success from 2024, But Will Need to Hit on Transfers With notable transfer additions such as Liberty Flames quarterback Kaidon Salter and Memphis Tigers offensive lineman Xavier Hill expected to lead the charge for Sanders in 2025, the Buffs do have proven commodities who can come in and play. With that being said, Sanders' heavy reliance on the transfer portal will be put to the test again. With so much turnover, thanks to the fact that they bring in 30+ transfers per year, it remains to be seen how sustainable this method can be. In his first two seasons at Colorado, Sanders has gone 13-12, but has shown glimpses of brilliance. With Colorado making him one of the highest-paid coaches in college football this offseason, all eyes will be on the Buffs again to see if they were a flash in the pan or a sign of things to come.
