Hull need to take more risks in attack
Hull City's Joe Gelhardt says the Tigers must "take more risks" when they attack to help get the results they need to stay in the Championship.Only relegation rivals Luton Town (41) have scored fewer goals than the 43 Hull have managed across 44 games this season.Ruben Selles' side came from behind to beat Preston 2-1 on Easter Monday in what was only the ninth league match in which they've scored two or more goals."We want to score goals, and I think we need to take more risks in the final third sometimes," Gelhardt told BBC Radio Humberside."If the ball isn't in the box, you're never going to score, so at some point we know we've got to take more risks and have more shots on goal - or even crosses into the box - and flood the box."Three of the teams below Hull - who are two points clear of the drop zone in 20th - also won on Monday, but Gelhardt says he's looking up the table."As long as we get the three points, it doesn't matter what's going on around us," said the Leeds loanee, who has scored three goals in 16 games since arriving in January."Preston were four points ahead of us; now it's one, so instead of looking down at other teams, let's look up and try and catch other teams. "That's my perspective on it."Hull welcome 21st-placed Derby County for what Gelhardt described as a "massive" encounter on Saturday afternoon."We will do everything we can this week in preparation to come back here and get the three points," he added."We're all fully focused on that, and we'll do what it takes."

Heavyweight Brit teen, 15, heading to Japan to become SUMO wrestler & reveals huge sacrifices he's making
A HEAVYWEIGHT teenager is heading to Japan — to become a sumo wrestler. Nineteen-stone Nicholas Tarasenko, 15, will become only the second Briton to do so. 4 The 6ft 3in teen has won a scholarship at a prestigious academy where he will train with ten other sumo hopefuls. He will have strict schedules at the Minato Beya stable, which hopes to turn him into a champion of the ring. Nicholas will see his family only occasionally, until he has achieved his full potential. He will also be taught to cook a Japanese soup — chankonabe — which will form part of his 7,000-calorie daily diet. Nicholas, of Hull, East Yorks, told The Sun: 'I've been given a chance and I intend to go as hard as possible at it. My hope is to reach the high ranks. This is what motivates me to succeed.' He fell in love with sumo wrestling when his Estonian dad, karaoke bar owner Georgi Zilkin, 47, took him on a trip back to his homeland. Nicholas added: 'My dad had connections to a sumo wrestler who reached the highest rank in Japan and he hosts a tournament every year. I managed to win somehow. My opponents were very tough. 'From then on, I realised sumo wrestling was the sport for me.' The last British pro sumo wrestler, Nathan Strange, from Kent, quit the sport in 1990 complaining of bullying by his Japanese stablemates. The £3m reason Rangers are paying close attention after first 49ers transfer domino falls
Gers may revive their interest in striker Joe Gelhardt who has been pushed further down the pecking order at Leeds There's a £3m Rangers may be paying close attention after Leeds announced the signing of striker Lukas Nmecha on a free transfer. And his name is Joe Gelhardt – a potential signing that makes sense for more reasons than you may think. Andrew Cavenagh and the new owners at Ibrox are in the early stages of what should be a dramatic rebuild and finding the new man to bang in the goals will be key to that – particularly with the news that Cyriel Dessers could be on his way to AEK Athens as a deal in the region of £5m is being thrashed out. There's no official alliance with Leeds but their chairman Paraag Marathe joining the Ibrox board after the San Francisco 49ers-backed takeover tells you there is likely to be some crossover. And after the Elland Road side today added former Man City forward Nmecha to their ranks in their first addition of the summer, it opens the door for Rangers to move for a long-term target. Back in January it was heavily reported they were keen on striker Gelhardt, who has long been viewed as a rising star but now looks in need of a fresh start. In the end he stayed close to home, instead joining Hull City where he scored five goals in 20 appearances. But with Leeds now tooling up for life back in the Premier League with Nmecha's arrival, his prospects of an Elland Road revival look slim to non-existent. His reasonable goalscoring form at Hull, coupled with Leeds' strengthened negotiating position and a contract which still has two years to run, mean he won't come dirt cheap. But a reasonable £3m asking price has been mooted down south – meaning Dessers' exit would be able to fund it with some change left over. An outright sale for Gelhardt seems more likely than a loan deal at this stage of his career and, if they do decide to go down that route, there's an obvious reason Rangers would be the preferred bidder. That would allow them to part ways while keeping a close eye on his development at a club under the same ownership umbrella – and potentially include a favourable buy-back option in the event that he hits the ground running at Ibrox. Gelhardt, now 23, has been capped by England up to U20 level but hasn't really kicked on since his £1m move from Wigan in 2020. He's played against Russell Martin's Southampton team in the past so will be known to the new man at the helm. He's spent time on loan at Sunderland and more recently Hull where he featured in a number of attacking positions, although is primarily a central forward and may relish the chance to nail down the No.9 jersey at his next club.

Ally McCoist sets off on gruelling charity ride around Ireland despite his bike BREAKING DOWN just days before
He's been joined by a few other famous faces on the six-day cycle GEARING UP Ally McCoist sets off on gruelling charity ride around Ireland despite his bike BREAKING DOWN just days before Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) ALLY McCOIST is back in the saddle for his latest charity cycle event – but only after dealing with a few worrying mechanical issues first! The Scotland and Rangers icon headed off from Belfast this morning to take on the 555-mile, six-day ride around Ireland as part of the Doddie'5 Lions Challenge. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 5 Ally McCoist is taking part in the charity cycle around Ireland 5 But he had to deal with a few mechanical issues before he set off 5 And the group are doing it to help raise funds in memory of Doddie Weir Joining McCoist in the fundraising effort are Scotland rugby great Kenny Logan, his wife and broadcaster, Gabby, former rugby stars Mel Deane and Will Greene and actor Jamie Bamber. The group will cover up to 100 miles a day in memory of Scotland legend Doddie Weir, who sadly passed away in 2022, and to raise money for research into motor neurone disease. So far, the challenge has raised more than £300,000 for the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation and the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association, with hopes of hitting the £500,000 mark before the final leg. The ride will finish in Dublin on Friday where the team will deliver the match ball to the Aviva Stadium ahead of the British and Irish Lions' clash with Argentina. Read More Sport NOTE TO SELF Fergie spots emotional 26-year-old letter he sent on tour of Rangers' museum Logan says McCoist – who also took part in the 2023 charity cycle from Edinburgh to Paris - will fill the role again of trying to keep everyone's spirits up during the gruelling ordeal. But he revealed his close pal nearly never made it all – because he kept fiddling with his bike's settings! Logan said: 'Ally's been out and about but his bike broke down the other day. 'I told him not to trust himself to check the batteries on his fancy gears – someone else needs to do that for him! 'We've lost a few to injury and it just shows how demanding this is going to be. 'I'm not going to lie – I've had my own aches and pains. Rangers legend Ally McCoist labelled 'Scotland's James Bond' as he takes an Easter dip in freezing cold loch 'No major injuries thankfully, but I've definitely been reminded why I probably shouldn't be moving this much at my age! 'I'm most nervous about the hills. 'I convinced myself Ireland was flat – it's definitely not. But nerves are good. 'I've always had them before a big challenge, and it means I care.' This year's event is both a tribute to Weir and a rallying cry to continue his legacy. 5 Former Scotland star Kenny Logan and his wife Gabby are part of the crew 5 And the group hope to raise almost £500,000 for two charities Logan added: 'The support's been incredible. 'We've still got time to push, and every penny counts. 'Since Doddie died, awareness has grown massively – but we still need to fund research. 'The Foundation has committed nearly £20 million already, which is phenomenal, but it's only the beginning. 'Doddie would be proud – but he'd be telling us to go further and faster. 'That's why we're doing this.' Seven Scots are in the Lions squad for the tour after Zander Fagerson withdrew due to injury. Logan admits he's disappointed winger Darcy Graham never got the nod – but thinks there might be time yet for the Edinburgh flier to make the plane to Australia. He added: 'I still think Darcy will go – there's a lot of rugby to be played between now and then, and there will be injuries. 'We've seen that with Zander missing out already. 'Overall it's great to see so many Scots in the squad – they'll be out to make their mark in Australia and put down a marker for the Test team.' All funds raised will support the Foundation's mission to find effective treatments – and ultimately a cure – for motor neurone disease.
