The £3m reason Rangers are paying close attention after first 49ers transfer domino falls
Gers may revive their interest in striker Joe Gelhardt who has been pushed further down the pecking order at Leeds There's a £3m Rangers may be paying close attention after Leeds announced the signing of striker Lukas Nmecha on a free transfer. And his name is Joe Gelhardt – a potential signing that makes sense for more reasons than you may think. Andrew Cavenagh and the new owners at Ibrox are in the early stages of what should be a dramatic rebuild and finding the new man to bang in the goals will be key to that – particularly with the news that Cyriel Dessers could be on his way to AEK Athens as a deal in the region of £5m is being thrashed out. There's no official alliance with Leeds but their chairman Paraag Marathe joining the Ibrox board after the San Francisco 49ers-backed takeover tells you there is likely to be some crossover. And after the Elland Road side today added former Man City forward Nmecha to their ranks in their first addition of the summer, it opens the door for Rangers to move for a long-term target. Back in January it was heavily reported they were keen on striker Gelhardt, who has long been viewed as a rising star but now looks in need of a fresh start. In the end he stayed close to home, instead joining Hull City where he scored five goals in 20 appearances. But with Leeds now tooling up for life back in the Premier League with Nmecha's arrival, his prospects of an Elland Road revival look slim to non-existent. His reasonable goalscoring form at Hull, coupled with Leeds' strengthened negotiating position and a contract which still has two years to run, mean he won't come dirt cheap. But a reasonable £3m asking price has been mooted down south – meaning Dessers' exit would be able to fund it with some change left over. An outright sale for Gelhardt seems more likely than a loan deal at this stage of his career and, if they do decide to go down that route, there's an obvious reason Rangers would be the preferred bidder. That would allow them to part ways while keeping a close eye on his development at a club under the same ownership umbrella – and potentially include a favourable buy-back option in the event that he hits the ground running at Ibrox. Gelhardt, now 23, has been capped by England up to U20 level but hasn't really kicked on since his £1m move from Wigan in 2020. He's played against Russell Martin's Southampton team in the past so will be known to the new man at the helm. He's spent time on loan at Sunderland and more recently Hull where he featured in a number of attacking positions, although is primarily a central forward and may relish the chance to nail down the No.9 jersey at his next club.

Hull need to take more risks in attack
Hull City's Joe Gelhardt says the Tigers must "take more risks" when they attack to help get the results they need to stay in the relegation rivals Luton Town (41) have scored fewer goals than the 43 Hull have managed across 44 games this Selles' side came from behind to beat Preston 2-1 on Easter Monday in what was only the ninth league match in which they've scored two or more goals."We want to score goals, and I think we need to take more risks in the final third sometimes," Gelhardt told BBC Radio Humberside."If the ball isn't in the box, you're never going to score, so at some point we know we've got to take more risks and have more shots on goal - or even crosses into the box - and flood the box."Three of the teams below Hull - who are two points clear of the drop zone in 20th - also won on Monday, but Gelhardt says he's looking up the table."As long as we get the three points, it doesn't matter what's going on around us," said the Leeds loanee, who has scored three goals in 16 games since arriving in January."Preston were four points ahead of us; now it's one, so instead of looking down at other teams, let's look up and try and catch other teams. "That's my perspective on it."Hull welcome 21st-placed Derby County for what Gelhardt described as a "massive" encounter on Saturday afternoon."We will do everything we can this week in preparation to come back here and get the three points," he added."We're all fully focused on that, and we'll do what it takes." U's throw away lead to lose at Hull City
OXFORD United threw away a lead within the space of 10 minutes as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at Hull City. After a fairly lifeless first half from both sides, the U's took the lead after 66 minutes, when Michal Helik smashed in a brilliant first-time volley from a corner. But United conceded two sloppy goals within three minutes, as Joe Gelhardt worked a way through a gap in the U's defence, and then Gustavo Puerta somehow managed to squeeze the ball inside the near post from the left-hand byline. The loss extended United's winless run in Sky Bet Championship to nine matches, and heightened the scrap for survival the U's find themselves in. Gary Rowett switched back to his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation, and made three changes to the side which battled to the 1-1 draw at Norwich City. One of those was enforced as Cameron Brannagan was ruled out due to a minor knee injury, while Przemyslaw Placheta and Ole Romeny dropped to the bench. Into the side came Stan Mills, Matt Phillips and Ruben Rodrigues, with Mills starting for the first time since December 2023 following his lengthy recovery from a serious knee injury. In addition to Brannagan, Rowett was also without Tyler Goodrham due to illness, therefore Ben Nelson and Jordan Thorniley made the bench, with Nelson back fit after a quad injury suffered in the reverse clash against the Tigers back in November. The game took quarter of an hour to kick into life after a stodgy start, with Phillips bending in a right wing free kick which Elliott Moore headed wide. Midway through the first half, a 25-yard free kick from Will Vaulks brought a smart low save out of Tigers goalkeeper Ivor Pandur. The match then brightened a little bit, as Lewie Coyle directed a first-time volley wide with his right foot, while a Phillips cross skewed in from the left-hand byline forced Pandur into tipping the ball over for a corner which ultimately came to nothing for the U's. Gelhardt was a threat for the home side, and he showed quick feet to evade a couple of challenges, before then firing a left-footed effort from just outside the penalty box off target. Leeds United loanee Gelhardt then had a driving run down the right-hand side, prior to drifting infield and forcing a good save out of Jamie Cumming from the edge of the penalty area. Tempers flared at the end of the half, with a bit of pushing and shoving inside the United box, and referee Josh Smith saw fit to show a yellow card to both Ciaron Brown and Gelhardt. Five minutes into the second period, the U's pinched the ball high up the field, resulting in Mark Harris swivelling and shooting from the edge of the box, however the striker's low effort was claimed by Pandur. The Tigers were presented with a glorious chance to hit the target just before the hour mark, as Abu Kamara cut the ball back for Gelhardt, who instead of testing Cumming, blazed comfortably over the crossbar. Shortly after, United lost skipper Moore, who picked up a knock, and he was replaced by Nelson, while Placheta came on for Mills at the same time. The U's then nudged in front with 66 minutes on the clock, as Helik produced a fabulous first-time volley which flew into the back of the net from a Phillips corner. Seven minutes later though, the Tigers were level after Gelhardt squirmed through a gap in the United defence and finished from close range. The Tigers then put themselves in front three minutes later, as a shot from Puerta on the left-hand byline somehow found a way past Cumming at the goalkeeper's near post. Rowett responded by making another double switch, as Siriki Dembele and Romeny replaced Phillips and Rodrigues respectively. With three minutes to go, the ball fell to Placheta, who rattled the crossbar with a left-footed volley 25 yards from goal. Six minutes of stoppage were signalled at the end of the second half, but in truth, United never really looked like threatening to get an equaliser. Hull City (4-2-3-1): Pandur; Coyle, Jones, Hughes, McLoughlin; Alzate (Slater 67), Puerta; Kamara (Egan 90), Gelhardt, Joseph (Burstow 67); Crooks (Palmer 67). Lack of Leeds signings 'wise' or 'a big risk'?
After the transfer window closed on Monday, we asked what you thought about Leeds United's Gelhardt and Charlie Crew went on loan until the end of the season, while Sonny Perkins made his move to Leyton Orient a permanent one, but the Whites did not bring in any players. Here are some of your responses:Wayne: Another striker would have been nice but only if they would have improved the team. There was no point bringing in someone for the sake of it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it as the saying goes. We have a squad that is strong enough to go up. Piroe gets his fair share of criticism but he is second top scorer in the league and the likes of James, Solomon, Ramazani and Aaronson are all chipping in. So long as that continues, we should be more than good enough to get Frustrated really, despite leading the Championship we have not strengthened when given a golden opportunity to do so, like our competitors. Only time will tell if this was a wise decision!Lee: We have a good enough squad. Don't need the team spirit disturbing. Any permanent signing would need to be Premier League ready. I'm Lack of investment in January cost us promotion last season, let's hope it's not a case of history repeating itself come In Farke we trust, and in this group of players who have been outstanding so far. We are right not to waste money on the wrong players who won't improve the squad. Clearly should we gain promotion then will need to It's a big risk. Two or three injuries and you're prone to drop points. Why on earth wasn't Iheanacho taken on loan for example? It feels like a missed I noticed there were a lot of "loan" signings and judging by the sheer volumes this transfer window looked like collective panic stations. Signing loan players on short-term contracts is never a good thing because they might be the wrong fit, their presence may cause unrest in the dressing room and it takes more than a few weeks to get loanees playing in coordination with the We've been here before - the 'we don't need to buy' or 'there wasn't a quality player available'. If there are no injuries, before the end of the season, then fine. If there are, then it's going to be 50-50 for promotion, and I don't think I can take another play-off As long as we stay clear of injuries and red cards we should be fine. This squad is better than last year. Glad we saved money for summer We have been needing a Prem quality striker since Bielsa was the manager. So, it would appear that we as a club can only afford to buy strikers with potential and then to develop them on, ready for re-sale to supposed bigger clubs? If not the case, why have we not bought at least one?Neil: Very happy. Completely supportive. Definitely a wise window. There's only 16 games left to manage. The squad is good enough. Top, clear, and 60 goals is proof of that. Injuries are possible but there's already plenty of scope for regular top-quality rotation. No need to be nervous. We have only one injured player right now and he's about to return.
