Over 280 firearms collected at El Paso County event
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Over 280 firearms were collected last weekend during the Gun Buy Back event hosted by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, in partnership with the Office of County Commissioner Jackie Butler and the County Attorney's Office.
This event provided residents with a safe and anonymous opportunity to turn unwanted or unused firearms, helping to reduce the number of guns in circulation and enhance community safety, EPCSO said.
EPCSO said that 276 working firearms and eight non-operational firearms were collected.
'This event showed the power of community partnership,' Sheriff Oscar Ugarte said. 'Every firearm turned in is one less risk in our homes and on our streets. I want to thank Commissioner Jackie Butler, County Attorney Christina Sanchez, SISD Police, and the dedicated administrative staff at the SAC for their critical support in making this event safe, organized, and effective.'
'With more than 270 firearms turned in, our third Gun Buy Back event successfully contributed to our efforts to reduce gun violence and protect our kids and families,' County Commissioner Jackie Butler, Precinct 1, said. 'It is through community participation like this that we make meaningful progress in ensuring the safety of every resident. I'm grateful to everyone who took part and to our partners for their support in making this event possible.'
'This weekend's gun buyback event was a clear demonstration of our community's commitment to safety,' County Attorney Christina Sanchez said. 'Each firearm turned in represents a proactive step toward preventing harm and protecting lives. We are proud to have provided residents with a safe and anonymous way to make their homes and neighborhoods safer.'
EPCSO said this initiative marks a continued commitment from El Paso County officials to provide innovative, community-based solutions to address gun violence.

White Federal Building in Downtown El Paso, sparking concerns from local advocacy groups. You know, a lot of these people don't have lawyers because the nonprofit is backed up, so they can't take any more people. On top of that, a lot of people don't have the money to afford a lawyer,' said advocate Juan Flores. Previously, ICE designated courthouses as 'sensitive locations,' limiting enforcement actions at these sites. However, this guidance has been rescinded under the current administration, leading to increased enforcement activities at court facilities. Supporters of the enforcement measures argue that they are necessary for upholding immigration laws. 'We've had hundreds of thousands, millions of people who are here after their court date has said they're not allowed to stay here. They never reported. They never self-deported. So now we have a huge problem in this country, and it needs to be straightened out,' said Michael Aboud, Republican Party chairman. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) defended the enforcement actions, a statement to KTSM reads in part: 'Secretary Noem is reversing Biden's catch and release policy that allowed millions of unvetted illegal aliens to be let loose on American streets. This Administration is once again implementing the rule of law. Most aliens who illegally entered the United States within the past two years are subject to expedited removals. Biden ignored this legal fact and chose to release millions of illegal aliens, including violent criminals, into the country with a notice to appear before an immigration judge. ICE is now following the law and placing these illegal aliens in expedited removal, as they always should have been. If they have a valid, credible fear claim, they will continue in immigration proceedings, but if no valid claim is found, aliens will be subject to a swift deportation.' Venezuelan man convicted of conspiracy to harbor migrants
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – A federal jury in El Paso convicted a Venezuelan national of conspiracy to harbor undocumented migrants, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Texas said in a news release. Marcel Eliezer Zapata Zapata-Colmenarez, 26, opened the door of his residence on Jan. 30 to find agents from the U.S. Border Patrol and other federal law enforcement agencies present, according to court documents and evidence presented at trial. The Attorney's Office said that with Zapata-Colmenarez's consent, the agents entered and searched the residence, finding piles of clothes on the floor, wet and muddy clothing hanging in a closet, and other signs consistent with harboring and smuggling undocumented migrants. Zapata-Colmenarez also granted consent for agents to search his cell phone, leading to the discovery of proof-of-life videos — videos sent by recently-crossed undocumented migrants acknowledging that they had been smuggled with the assistance of a smuggling network, the Attorney's Office said. The Attorney's Office said Zapata-Colmenarez later admitted that he accepted an offer to harbor undocumented migrants in his apartment and was paid $50 per migrant. Zapata-Colmenarez was arrested Jan. 30 and indicted a month later for one count of conspiracy to harbor undocumented migrants and one count of harboring undocumented migrants for financial gain, the Attorney's Office said. The Attorney's Office said Zapata-Colmenarez's sentencing hearing is currently scheduled for Aug. 26, and he faces up to 10 years in federal prison along with a fine of up to $250,000. The U.S. Border Patrol investigated the case with assistance from the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations. Teen was shot, killed in road rage incident while sitting in backseat
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A 14-year-old boy was shot at least once and killed while sitting in the backseat of a vehicle in what Las Cruces Police are calling a road rage incident. Las Cruces Police said that Alejandro Roman was shot and killed at about 9 p.m. Monday night, June 2 near the intersection of Solano Drive and Spruce Avenue. Las Cruces Police: 14-year-old dead after alleged road rage shooting No arrests have been made at this measures were attempted, but Roman was pronounced dead at the scene, police are continuing their investigation and trying to determine the circumstances that led to the shooting.
