has partnered withto develop a new. The aircraft is expected to stay in the air for up to 90 days.Skydweller Aero and Thales have announced their collaboration on a maritime surveillance drone. The drone is powered completely by solar energy and is designed to fly continuously without refueling. The first goal is to achieve a flight duration of 90 days. The drone has been created for extended defense surveillance missions. Thales will provide radar systems tailored for maritime operations. This partnership aims to improve monitoring over long ocean routes. The drone collects energy from over 17,000 solar cells. These are spread across 2,900 square feet of wing area. The wingspan of the drone is 236 feet, which is 25 feet longer than a Boeing 747.Under good conditions, these solar cells can generate up to 100 kilowatts of power. The drone's batteries store energy for night flight, although capacity loss over time could affect endurance. The aircraft is made from carbon fiber and can carry 800 pounds of payload. This allows it to transport radar and other systems necessary for maritime patrol. Many previous solar-powered aircraft have failed due to structural stress at mid-altitudes. These failures happened when aircraft climbed or descended through altitudes between 6,500 to 32,800 feet. The Skydweller drone is designed to function within that same altitude range. It uses software to reduce turbulence-related stress. The gust-load alleviation system is built into its flight controls to avoid damage. To stay airborne for 90 days, the drone must operate without failure. It is equipped with a quadruple-redundant flight control system. If one system fails, another takes over. Its vehicle management system uses self-healing code. If any software string fails, it is shut down, fixed, and restored mid-flight. This ensures the drone remains operational at all times. These technologies aim to prevent mission disruption and ensure full system recovery while in the air. While the drone can fly at night using stored solar energy, battery life will reduce over time. This limits the potential maximum patrol time. Also, because it relies on sunlight, it cannot be used in polar regions during winter.Future test flights will assess the full capability of the drone. The team will focus on expanding the maximum duration and testing the radar integration.Despite these limitations, the project marks progress in renewable energy and surveillance.Skydweller is built to fly at mid-altitudes safely, using gust-load control and self-healing systems for uninterrupted long-duration surveillance missions. It uses charged onboard batteries to fly at night but avoids low-light zones like polar regions in winter to maintain energy levels.

ET Market Watch: Sensex rises 304 pts, Nifty reclaims 24,600 on Fed cut hopes, cooling inflation

Transcript Hi, I am Neha Vashishth from the Economic Times. Welcome to a brand-new episode of ET Market Watch, your quick pulse on markets and money. Let's hear the top highlights. Markets Update Indian markets ended Wednesday in the green, riding on hopes of a U.S. Fed rate cut in September and easing domestic inflation. The Sensex climbed 304 points to 80,565, while the Nifty added 132 points to finish at 24,619. Autos and financials led the rally, auto stocks gained 1.1%, financials rose 0.4%. Top Sensex gainers included BEL, Eternal, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Tata Motors, and Mahindra & Mahindra, each up between 1.4% and 2.3%. In standout moves, Apollo Hospitals surged nearly 8%, Hindalco jumped 5% after earnings, Nykaa rose 5% on a twofold profit jump, and Paytm gained 3% after its payments arm secured RBI approval to operate as an online payments aggregator. Midcaps and smallcaps also joined the party, up 0.6% and 0.7% respectively. Expert Take Vinod Nair of Geojit Financial Services says CPI hitting an eight-year low is fuelling hopes for a revival in discretionary spending, especially in autos and metals. Globally, sentiment also got a lift from easing oil prices and China's tariff deadline extension but eyes are on the Trump–Putin meet set for August 15. Global Markets World equities hit record highs as softer inflation data boosted risk appetite. Japan's Nikkei crossed 43,000 for the first time ever, European markets were up around half a percent, and U.S. futures pointed higher. In crypto, Ether hit a near four-year high above $4,679. Commodities & Forex Brent crude slipped 0.7% to $65.67 a barrel after the IEA projected supply would outpace demand this year. The rupee had its best day in over a month, up 0.3% to 87.44 against the U.S. dollar as the greenback weakened on Fed cut bets. That's your market wrap for today. This is ET Market Watch. Section 87A Rebate: Is Income Up To Rs 12.75 Lakh Entirely Tax Free For Salaried? Check This Exception

Last Updated: Any gains from capital assets will attract LTCG and STCG taxes at a special rate irrespective of a salaried taxpayer's income. Under the new tax regime, the government provided tax relief to salaried taxpayers earning up to Rs. 12 Lakh annually, with an additional Rs 75,000 standard deduction. Under the new tax regime, as announced in Budget 2025-26, for the salaried taxpayers, an annual income up to Rs 12.75 lakh becomes entirely tax-free. The Finance Act, 2025, has introduced major changes to the tax rebate under Section 87A as announced in the Union Budget. Under Section 87A of the Income Tax Act, 1961, the tax-free income limit was extended to Rs 12 lakh from Rs 7 lakh earlier. However, the Section 87A rebate will not apply to incomes taxed at special rates, such as short-term capital gains (STCG) and long-term capital gains (LTCG). Even if a salaried taxpayer's income remains below the 12.75 lakh exemption limit, the entire STCG or LTCG in FY 2025-26 will be taxed at the applicable special rate without any benefits provided under Section 87A. In the Finance Act, 2025, the government has amended clause (iii) of Section 115BAC(1A) of the Income Tax Act, 1961. Announced in the Budget 2025, the incorporation of an enhanced standard deduction of Rs 75,000 meant that taxpayers earning up to Rs 12.75 lakh were not liable to pay any tax. But the drafting error in the act prevented salaried taxpayers from claiming and bringing the standard deduction down to Rs 50,000. 'Providing clarity for the new Income Tax regime, where standard deduction of Rs. 75,000 will be clarified for salaried individuals," said Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman regarding the amendment in the Lok Sabha on August 13. As reported by the Economic Times, Taxmann Vice President, Research and Advisory Division, Naveen Wadhwa, highlighted the importance of the move. 'I had pointed out that proviso to Section 16(ia) gave a reference to clause (ii) of section 115BAC(1A), which applies to the assessment year 2025-26, but did not mention clause (iii), which governed the assessment year 2026-27," Wadhwa was quoted as saying by ET. 'Due to this omission, the enhanced standard deduction of Rs. 75,000 under the new tax regime failed to be available for the current financial year 2025-26. However, in the latest Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025, as passed by the Parliament, this drafting error is fixed," he added. view comments First Published: August 13, 2025, 18:56 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
