Maroons captain Cameron Munster to honour late father Steven in State of Origin decider
But he will take to the field knowing his late father is watching down on him, feeling proud and wanting him to play on.
Tributes are flowing for Steven Munster, who died at the age of 58 at the weekend.
A husband to Debbie and father of Danielle and Cameron, Steven was a stalwart of the Rockhampton sporting community and one of the Queensland skipper's biggest supporters.
Just one day before his death, Steven spoke about his desire to see his son captain the Maroons to a historic victory.
He said he and wife Debbie were full of admiration for their son's success.
"Both of us are so proud of the way he's going through his life and now he's captain of Queensland, it's just unbelievable," Steven told the ABC last week.
"He's got to be proud the way he's turned his life around and for where he's come from.
Before his sudden death, Steven had planned to watch the game in Sarina while visiting family.
Cameron Munster was in the Queensland team's Origin camp when he received the heartbreaking news.
He now plans to honour his dad by leading the Maroons out in what will be an emotionally-charged occasion.
The 30-year-old was man of the match in his first game as Maroons skipper during game two in Perth.
Wednesday night will be his 21st Origin match, where he'll be looking to back up that performance.
No Queensland team in the past 45 years has lost the first game and gone on to win the next two games away from home.
Steven Munster will be remembered as a champion sportsman in his own right at his home in central Queensland.
He was a stalwart of Rockhampton Cricket, representing the region as well as earning Australian team selection in indoor cricket.
Speaking to the ABC on Friday, Steven proudly recalled his son's sporting talents as a youngster growing up in central Queensland, as well as his daughter Danielle's achievements in touch football.
"[Cameron] was very good at soccer. He was 11 playing in the under-12s and they did an assessment on him to play [club] soccer in the under-14s for Bluebirds," he said.
"He passed the assessment and had two games off the bench and scored a hat-trick in both games."
He also followed his father's feats on the cricket field by playing A-grade at just 17.
"I turned up late. I dropped him off then went back home, had lunch and came back and he had already got the hat-trick while I was away."
Cameron's NRL club, the Melbourne Storm, offered its condolences to the Munster family.
"Steve was a beloved member of the Storm family and an incredible supporter of Cameron and the club," a spokesperson said.
"He was a regular in the Storm sheds and at events along with his wife, Deborah, and was a constant presence at his State of Origin and Australian representative matches."'
On Monday, Storm and Queensland player Harry Grant, who is also from central Queensland, paid his respects to a "beautiful family".
"It is a tough time for Cam and the immediate family and extended family and everyone in camp but I think the best way we can support him is throwing our arm around him," Grant said.
After taking time away to grieve with his family, Cameron is expected return for the Maroons' final training session, the captain's run, in Sydney on Tuesday.
The Queensland team will also wear black armbands in a tribute to Steven on Wednesday night.

Roosters star Sam Walker learns fate for ugly tackle that left David Klemmer grimacing in pain
Roosters halfback Sam Walker can count his lucky stars after he avoided being charged for an ugly tackle that injured Dragons prop David Klemmer. In the 26th minute on Saturday, with the Dragons leading 18-12, the veteran forward took a hit-up before being tackled by two Roosters players. Then for whatever reason Walker, the third man in, cannoned into his legs below the knee. 'He has gone down awkwardly there and Walker went low and Klemmer was wincing before he got to the ground,' Dan Ginnane said. FOX LEAGUE, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every game of every round in the 2025 NRL Telstra Premiership, LIVE with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer. 'It's a penalty for the third man in and dangerous contact. 'He might be in more trouble than just giving away a penalty, he might get 10 in the bin.' Referee Grant Atkins wasted no time in sending Walker for 10 minutes as Klemmer hobbled off. 'Third man in, it's low, it's avoidable, there is force and high risk of injury, 10 in the bin,' Atkins said. You can watch the ugly incident in the player at the top of the page. Dan Ginnane added: 'Sam Walker in his return game has been sent to the sin bin. He will get 10 minutes to think about that.' And many felt Walker, who was making his return from injury, was set for another stint on the sidelines for his ugly tackle. But on Sunday, as the NRL sent around the charge sheet for Saturday's games, Walker was a notable omission. And safe to say NRL fans were largely stunned. 'What a rort,' one fan wrote on X in response to the news that Walker had avoided suspension. 'You're kidding?! That's a couple of weeks if I've ever seen it,' another added. While a third said: 'What …??? The NRL and judiciary are a joke.'

Extent of mystery blow to key Crow revealed after shock hospitalisation
Adelaide key defender Jordon Butts has suffered a collapsed lung during his side's 11-point victory over the Western Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon. The 25-year-old copped a knock to his sternum at some point during the second quarter, however Crows head coach Matthew Nicks post-game was still none the wiser as to what incident caused the injury. Butts was taken down to the Marvel Stadium changerooms for a number of tests, and was having trouble breathing. FOX FOOTY, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every match of every round in the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer. Via a club statement, Crows High Performance Manager Darren Burgess provided an update on the 85-gamer's condition. 'Jordon underwent a thorough examination at the ground and given his breathing was inhibited, he was sent to hospital for further assessment which revealed a punctured lung. He won't travel home with the team and instead he will remain in Melbourne overnight,' Burgess said. Subsequently, Butts will not return to Adelaide with teammates — instead staying interstate until he is cleared to travel. 'He'll spend the night here, and with the right people around him to make sure that he gets what he needs from this point on. But we won't know any more information until a specialist comes in and checks him up further,' Nicks told journalists in his post-game press conference. Fox Footy vision at half time showed Butts walking gingerly in the Adelaide changeroom on his way to hospital, evidently in pain. Young forward Brayden Cook also suffered a concussion after a head clash in his first game of AFL for the 2025 season, and has entered the league's concussion protocols. Despite losing two players, the Crows secured the victory in what was the latest failing for the Western Bulldogs to stamp their premiership credentials against a top-eight side. The Dogs came into the match with a 10-6 record, but nine of those victories had come against teams outside the top eight. All up they had a 1-6 record entering Saturday against teams currently in the finals positions, with a lone victory over GWS to go with defeats to the likes of the Lions, Pies, Suns, Cats and Hawks. Rather than shy away from the concerning record, the team's cheer squad dived straight off the deep end with its pre-match banner. 'They say we're flat track bullies, we think that's funny,' it said. 'Hey Crows, think you're tough? Give us your lunch money.' If anyone was doing some bullying at Marvel Stadium, however, it was Matthew Nicks' men, who are emerging as flag fancies themselves after their sixth win from their past seven games. For the record, that stretch includes wins over Hawthorn and the reigning premier Brisbane. The teams traded goals in the first term before the Crows took a seven-point lead into quarter-time, gradually building that to a match-winning 27-point edge at the last change. The Dogs kicked five goals to two in the final term, but it was too little to late for Luke Beveridge's side. While the Dogs' final aspirations will get another stern test against Brisbane next week, the Crows are scheduled for another high-stakes clash, hosting the Gold Coast Suns at Adelaide Oval in the final match of the round.

Channel 7 news reporter and AFL player separate after 12 years
Former Swans star Jeremy Laidler and Channel 7 reporter Amber Laidler have reportedly called it quits after 12 years together. The adorable couple in 2022 celebrated the birth of their first child, Will. As first reported by The Daily Telegraph, the pair have quietly, amicably separated, but are still living together in the same family home with their son. A quick glance at their social media posts suggests there appears to have been issues between the pair dating back several years. The former Swans player-turned assistant coach has not featured on Amber's Instagram page since December, 2023. Amber has not been seen on the 35-year-old former defender's Instagram page since November, 2023. According to the report, Amber, 32, has not been wearing her wedding ring in recent months. It is a sad end to a relationship that has stretched back to 2013, when they were first described in news reports as a 'hot new item'. They were married in 2017 in a glamorous event attended by several Swans teammates, including former co-captain Kieren Jack and his partner Charlotte Goodlet, a fellow news presenter and former model. Amber, whose maiden name is Greasley, has become a popular presenter at the Seven Network and has built a career in journalism after winning Miss World Australia in 2011. She previously worked behind the scenes at 7News before taking up her role as an on-air reporter. The footballer, meanwhile, finished his playing career in 2017, having played 87 games across nine seasons in the AFL. He previously played for Geelong and Carlton before making the move to the Swans. The highly-rated assistant coach left the Swans at the end of 2022 to make a move to rivals GWS.
