Rescue workers in Chile find the body of one of 5 miners trapped in copper mine

BOGOTA, Colombia, Aug 3, (AP): Rescue teams found a body inside a section of a Chilean copper mine that collapsed two days earlier during a moderate earthquake, the mine's director said Saturday. Rescuers have been trying to reach five miners who were trapped Thursday evening in the El Teniente mine in central Chile as rocks collapsed around them during a 4.2 magnitude quake.
The copper mine is one of Chile's largest. A spokesman for the rescue team that is trying to drill through 90 meters (295 feet) of rock to reach the miners said the body found on Saturday is one of the five miners who were trapped in the mine. El Teniente Director Andres Music said authorities were still trying to identify the body.
The body of another miner - not one of the five still trapped - identified as Paulo Marin Tapia was found Friday, shortly after the mine's partial collapse. Nine other mine workers suffered injuries, said Chile's National Copper Corp., known as Codelco, describing the incident as a result of "a seismic event.'

Two dead, six injured in shooting at LA music festival after-party

LOS ANGELES, Aug 5, (AP): A shooting erupted during a music festival after-party in downtown Los Angeles, killing two people and wounding six others early Monday, authorities said. Authorities first responded around 11 p.m. Sunday to shut down a "big party' after officers saw a person possibly armed with a gun go inside a building in a downtown warehouse district, said Officer Norma Eisenman. That person was arrested at the scene, she said. The party had been promoted on social media as an unofficial after-party for Hard Summer, a weekend techno-music festival held at Hollywood Park, about 9 miles (14 km) away in Inglewood, KTLA-TV reported. Shortly after officers had cleared the area, police received a report of shots fired around 1 a.m. When the officers returned, they found one person dead and learned multiple people had been struck by gunfire, Eisenman said in an email. A male victim died at the scene, and a female victim died at a hospital, Eisenman said. Six people were taken to hospitals in unknown condition, she said. A man told KABC-TV that his 29-year-old son was one of the two people killed. "This senseless violence and loss of life is devastating, and those who are responsible must be held accountable,' Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said in a statement. "There will be no tolerance for violence in this city. My thoughts are with the victims and their families.' There was no information about a suspect or a motive. Investigators remained at the scene for hours. Tyrone Laney, who lives in a temporary housing encampment around the corner from where the shooting occurred, said the partygoers returned about an hour after police broke up the gathering late Sunday. He said he heard thumping music, and then, around 1 a.m., a burst of gunfire from what sounded like an automatic weapon. "It was pretty clear and loud. … You knew that if those bullets landed in somebody, that they weren't walking away from the situation,' Laney told the Los Angeles Times.

Stella Rimington, Britain's first female MI5 spy chief, dies at 90

LONDON, Aug 5, (AP): Stella Rimington, the first female chief of Britain's MI5 intelligence agency and later a successful thriller writer, has died, her family said Monday. She was 90. The first woman to head a UK intelligence agency, Rimington was the inspiration for Judi Dench's portrayal of MI6 chief M in seven James Bond films. Her family said in a statement that Rimington died on Sunday "surrounded by her beloved family and dogs and determinedly held on to the life she loved until her last breath.' MI5's current director-general, Ken McCallum, said that "as the first avowed female head of any intelligence agency in the world, Dame Stella broke through long-standing barriers and was a visible example of the importance of diversity in leadership.' Born in London in 1935, Rimington studied English at Edinburgh University and later worked as an archivist. She was living in India with her diplomat husband in the mid-1960s when she was recruited by MI5, Britain's domestic security service, as a part-time clerk and typist in its New Delhi office. She joined the agency full-time after moving back to London in 1969 and rose through the ranks, overcoming rules that kept the most prestigious roles, such as recruiting and running agents, for men only. She worked in each of MI5's operational branches - counterespionage, counterterrorism and counter-subversion - at a time when MI5's work included sniffing out Soviet spies, infiltrating Northern Ireland militant groups and, controversially, spying on leftists, trade union leaders and other alleged subversives. Rimington acknowledged in 2001 that the organization "may have been a bit over-enthusiastic' in some of its snooping on domestic targets during the Cold War.

32 bodies found in clandestine graves in central Mexico

MEXICO CITY, Aug 5, (AP): Authorities in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato said 32 bodies were found on a property in the municipality of Irapuato and nearly half of them have been identified. The Guanajuato state prosecutor's office said via X Monday that the bodies were found in clandestine graves on the property in the community of La Calera on Irapuato's north side, about 320 kilometers (200 miles) northwest of Mexico City. Forensic teams had working at the site since July 30, prosecutors said. Authorities were working to identify the remaining bodies. The discovery came less than two months after a mass shooting at a street party in Irapuato left 12 people dead. Guanajuato has suffered persistent violence in recent years as the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel battles the homegrown Santa Rosa de Lima organized crime group. The state recorded more than 1,500 homicides from January through July. Organized crime groups frequently bury their victims in clandestine graves. The Mexican government's current tally of disappeared is nearly 132,000.
