Ex-White House Doctor Refuses Questions in G.O.P. Inquiry on Biden's Mental Acuity
The doctor, Kevin O'Connor, cited both physician-patient privilege and his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination, according to a statement that one of his lawyers read to the House Oversight Committee at the start of his scheduled closed-door deposition.
Dr. O'Connor, who served all four years as Mr. Biden's doctor in the White House, had been subpoenaed by Republicans on the oversight panel who are investigating whether Mr. Biden and his aides concealed mental deficiencies that made him unable to perform presidential duties. The inquiry includes questions about whether Mr. Biden's staff abused an autopen, a device routinely used by presidents to put their signatures to formal documents, to illegally carry out official actions in his name.
Presidents have for decades used an autopen to sign all manner of documents, including major legislation; doing so is legal as long as a president authorizes it. President Trump and his allies have been stoking a theory that Mr. Biden suffered from severe age-related decline that left him incapable of making presidential decisions at all, making any action taken in his name via the device legally invalid.
In a statement, Representative James Comer, Republican of Kentucky and the Oversight chairman, blasted Dr. O'Connor for refusing to cooperate and suggested he was trying to hide something.
'It's clear there was a conspiracy to cover up President Biden's cognitive decline after Dr. Kevin O'Connor, Biden's physician and family business associate, refused to answer any questions and chose to hide behind the Fifth Amendment,' he said. 'The American people demand transparency, but Dr. O'Connor would rather conceal the truth.'

'Diaper Diplomacy': YouTube channel features AI baby versions of politicians
Move over E*TRADE Baby — a new generation of talking tykes is going viral, but instead of stock quotes, they're politicians discussing foreign policy, the economy and bickering in congressional committee hearings. Making its debut on YouTube, Diaper Diplomacy videos use artificial intelligence software to transform some of the nation's most well-known political figures, such as President Donald Trump and U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.), into irritable infants while using the actual audio from the interviews or press conferences. With more than 67,000 subscribers and over 40 videos, the channel has garnered millions of views and a loyal following through its recreations of viral political moments, starring "babyfied" politicians of both parties. Diaper Diplomacy has recreated videos of a variety of notable figures in American politics, ranging from Trump visiting a construction site with Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell to U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez testifying before Congress, and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., explaining how he discovered and placed a dead bear cub in his car - among others. "Trigger Warning (for everyone): I roast both sides," according to the channel description, "Because let's be honest —our politicians act like toddlers, and it's time someone put them back in time-out." While some videos are for "members only," the channel's creator has widely shared numerous videos as fundraisers for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, allowing "babies to help other babies."USA TODAY has contacted the White House and Booker for comment. But who runs Diaper Diplomacy? According to a bio on "Buy Me a Coffee," Diaper Diplomacy is run by a "regular guy" who is chasing his dreams as a video creator. "[I am] trying to keep my head above water while raising three kids — including a 10-week-old who seems to think diapers grow on trees. If one of my videos gave you a laugh, I'd be super grateful for your support," the bio says. "Every little bit helps me keep making more content (and helps keep my little dude stocked up on diapers)." When recently asked by a viewer in the comments section whether the channel had become a full-time gig, the response was that it's been a "wild ride," and, hopefully, "getting close." "It's not paying all the bills yet, I've got a lot of mouths to feed and actual diapers to buy, but I think within a few months it can," was the response. "We'll see." The channel also touts video-specific merchandise, membership-only perks and access to "Diaper Doppelgänger GTP," the AI tool used to "babify" politicians on both sides of the aisle for $9.95. Maria Scruggs files to run for St. Petersburg mayor
Maria Scruggs, a former president of the St. Petersburg branch of the NAACP and longtime community activist, has filed to run for St. Petersburg mayor in 2026. Scruggs, 67, filed paperwork with the city clerk's office Friday, becoming the first mayoral candidate to do so. She will presumably challenge Mayor Ken Welch, who said last year he would seek reelection but has not filed to run yet. 'I believe that the city of St. Petersburg can be going in a different direction,' Scruggs told the Tampa Bay Times. 'While I think we have made some strides forward, our conversations throughout the community is an overall dissatisfaction with the way the city is going.' Scruggs said she consistently hears concerns on five issues: The pros and cons that come with potentially losing the Tampa Bay Rays, cost of living, affordable housing, flooding and the handling of the aftermath of hurricanes. 'I certainly believe that the preparation through training, through certification, through education, has certainly prepared me to become the mayor of St. Petersburg,' she said. Scruggs entered the state's deferred retirement program after 19 years with Orange County Corrections Department. This is Scruggs' sixth time seeking public office. She ran unsuccessfully for St. Petersburg City Council in 2017 and 2005 and for Pinellas County Commission in 2020 and 2004. She has run for St. Petersburg mayor once before in 2001. She supported Welch's bid for mayor in 2021. Welch declined to comment through a city spokesperson. He opened a new political action committee in January after the state in November revoked his old one, Pelican PAC, for failing to file reports. The new Pelican Political Action Committee has raised $87,175 since April. Scruggs' official campaign kickoff will take place Sept. 27 at Black Leaf Cigar and Wine Lounge downtown. Four City Council seats are also on the ballot next year. Two candidates have filed for the downtown and southeast seat, District 6: Children's Network of Hillsborough CEO Terri Balliet and public health practitioner Linsey Grove. Solve the daily Crossword

Washington Primary Election: Mayor of Everett
Current Mayor Cassie Franklin has served in the Everett mayoral office for the past eight years, and is up against three candidates this term: Scott Murphy, Rich Ryan, and Janice R. Greene. Each of the three candidates has submitted a statement, along with details about their experience and education, to the Office of the Secretary of State. Read the candidates' statements below or find more details on these candidates here. Cassie Franklin Statement: When I was elected Mayor in 2018, Everett faced real, economic and safety challenges. These past eight years, I've led with a clear vision— investing in public safety, driving economic growth, addressing budget gaps, while protecting quality of life for all. Together, we've revitalized downtown, added 3000+ housing units, launched Everett Mall's redevelopment, and expanded our waterfront into a hub for business and recreation. The new Everett Outdoor Event Center is transformational – inspiring investment, creating jobs and accelerating growth and opportunity. Public safety remains my top priority. With strong partnerships I've successfully led our Police, Alternative Response and city teams to reduce crime while expanding housing, treatment, and mental health services. Everett is safer because of this balanced approach. I'm the experienced Mayor to keep Everett moving forward— through challenges and change. I've led across three federal administrations and have strong relationships to navigate the future. I'm honored to be supported by Police, Firefighters, Longshoremen (ILWU), Washington Multi-Family Housing Association, Congressman Larsen, Congresswoman DelBene and many local leaders and organizations. Today we are one Everett - resilient, inclusive and vibrant. I'm proud of all we've achieved, and I ask for your support to continue building a safer, stronger Everett. Scott Murphy Statement: Whether it's public safety, increasing homelessness, public drug use, or Everett's serious budget spiral, we are worse off! We're not as safe as eight years ago. I will make public safety Everett's top priority, starting with fully staffing the police department – many positions have been unfilled for years. Homelessness has increased 65% from 2018 to 2024. Everett needs a plan! Since 2021, Everett has spent 38% of its Fund Balance (Rainy Day Fund) while cutting services like our Park Ranger program and library hours. The City now projects a $6.8 million deficit in 2026, with Fund Balance (Rainy Day Fund) exhausted by 2028. With Scott's experience as a former Councilmember, successful business leader, and CPA, Scott will restore fiscal discipline, balance the budget, prioritize essential services and ensure taxpayer dollars are spent wisely. We have the opportunity to chart a new direction – 'Let's turn Everett around!'. Endorsed by former Everett Mayor Ed Hansen; Councilmember Judy Tuohy, 9 former Councilmembers: Brenda Stonecipher; Shannon Affholter, Richard Anderson, Gigi Burke, Ron Gipson, Arlan Hatloe, Connie Niva, Mark Olson, Bill Rucker, Retired Police Chiefs: Jim Scharf, Al Shelstad; Retired Fire Captain Curt Rider, Everett Transit ATU 883, IBEW Local 77, IUPAT DC5 Rich Ryan Statement: My name is Rich Ryan, and I am running for Mayor of Everett to provide practical leadership that reflects the needs of everyday people. As a renter, IT professional, musician, and producer, I understand the challenges our community faces. Skyrocketing housing costs and economic pressures affect families every day. I'm not a career politician; I bring a perspective, rooted in real life experience. My focus is on making Everett more affordable, welcoming, and transparent. I will encourage responsible housing development, protect tenants, and ensure local government is accountable to residents. I'll also invest in arts and culture, drawing people to our city and supporting local businesses. My campaign is built on fairness, inclusion, openness, and respect for human rights. I'm committed to leading by example, with integrity, and without corporate funding. I'd be honored to earn your vote. Janice R. Greene Statement: I'm running for Mayor because Everett needs leadership grounded in real life. I raised three kids in our city, as a parent, and I know the choices our families too often face between housing, childcare, and other essentials. My professional career started as a union Machinist, and after 17 years I managed business portfolios. I later helped hundreds of small businesses find their economic footing, creating needed jobs and opportunities. As Mayor, I'll bring unique perspectives and expertise to tackle the city's $12.6 million deficit, ensuring we don't turn our backs on core services and vulnerable neighbors. I'll champion economic development and family-wage jobs, expand childcare access, and address housing affordability so families are not priced out of our city and low-income residents are not pushed into homelessness. I'll support first responders and behavioral health responses through community partnerships and smart investments. Endorsed by: Snohomish County Democrats; Sen. June Robinson; Rep. April Berg; Snohomish County Councilmember Megan Dunn, and more! From steel-toed boots to executive leadership, I bring a lifetime of experience collaborating with labor, business, and community. With your vote, we can unite Everett to build the future we deserve! Solve the daily Crossword
