Ethiopian Airlines bets on Hyderabad's medical tourism with launch of direct flights connecting Addis Ababa

The Hindu6 hours ago

Tapping into Hyderabad's growing reputation as a medical tourism hub, Ethiopian Airlines has launched a new direct air route connecting the city with Addis Ababa, with plans to channel inbound patients from across Africa to hospitals in Telangana.
Thrice-weekly service
The thrice-weekly service, which began on June 16 from Addis Ababa and on June 17 from Hyderabad, is part of Africa's largest airline's expanding India network. The carrier will operate flight ET 682 from Addis Ababa to Hyderabad on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, with return flight ET 683 departing from Hyderabad on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
Teklehaimanot G Yohannes, managing director of International Services at Ethiopian Airlines Group, told The Hindu that medical travel is emerging as a key growth area for the airline in India.
Relations with major hospitals in India
'Medical tourism is indeed a growing opportunity. We already have established relationships with major hospitals in India, including a few in Hyderabad. Additionally, we operate a division called Ethiopian Holidays, which also promotes medical travel. We are in the process of developing a dedicated medical tourism package, which will soon be launched. Once finalised and approved by our headquarters, this initiative is expected to further boost inbound travel to Hyderabad for medical treatment,' he said.
The airline's move comes at a time when Hyderabad's public and private hospitals are increasingly attracting patients from African countries for specialised treatment in cardiology, oncology, nephrology and organ transplants.
Mr. Yohannes noted that the airline's relationship with Hyderabad began during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it started operating cargo charters carrying critical medical supplies. 'That effort evolved into regular cargo operations. Today, we continue to transport pharma and IT-related shipments from Hyderabad. While pharma is not always about high volume, it demands precision and cold-chain reliability. To that end, we have state-of-the-art cold storage facilities in Addis Ababa and our own temperature-controlled pharma containers, ensuring integrity from origin to destination.'
Responding to recent concerns over aviation safety following the Air India flight 171 crash involving a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner in Ahmedabad, Mr. Yohannes said, 'We operate 29 of the same aircraft type. That said, aviation remains one of the safest and fastest modes of transportation. We have not encountered any major issues with our fleet. The incident in India is unfortunate, but we continue to maintain rigorous safety and maintenance standards. Passenger safety is our top priority.'

Air India Crash: 163 Victims Identified, 124 Bodies Handed Over To Families

Ahmedabad: Five days after an Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad claimed 270 lives, 163 victims have so far been identified through DNA matching and 124 bodies handed over to their families, officials said on Tuesday. Authorities are carrying out DNA tests to establish the identity of the victims as many bodies were charred beyond recognition or damaged. "So far, 163 DNA samples have been matched, and 124 bodies have been handed over to the respective families. Remaining mortal remains will be handed over soon," Medical Superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital Dr Rakesh Joshi told reporters. Of the 71 injured persons admitted to the hospital after the crash, nine are currently undergoing treatment while two died during treatment, said Joshi. He dismissed reports which claimed two more MBBS students of BJ Medical College, affiliated to the Civil Hospital, were killed in the crash. "I want to clarify that only four students of BJMC were killed in the crash and there is no change in that count. Of those two doctors who were also killed, one was on board the flight while another was from Surat and came to the hostel to meet his sister who married a resident doctor," said Joshi. He hoped that the DNA profiling of all the victims would be completed by either Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning. All but one of the 242 persons on board the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner were killed after it crashed into a medical college complex in Ahmedabad moments after taking off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1.39 pm on June 12. A total of 29 persons were killed on the ground.

Two more Covid-linked deaths reported in Maharashtra

Mumbai: On Tuesday, the state health department linked two more deaths to Covid-19. One was a 68-year-old woman from Thane with interstitial lung disease, and the other was an 81-year-old man from Solapur with viral meningitis. There were a total of 31 deaths linked to Covid-19 since May. Of these, six were in Mumbai, one of which was just a day earlier in a 44-year-old woman with chronic liver cirrhosis. All the deceased had severe comorbidities. Doctors earlier told TOI that while Covid-19 is not seen to cause mortality by itself, it can pressure and weaken the body further if the person has a severe underlying disease. The cause of deaths in such cases is the primary disease of the person. Meanwhile, the state recorded 67 new cases on Tuesday, of which 17 were in Mumbai. Other cases were reported from Pune (18), Solapur (16), Kolhapur (4), Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (3), Nagpur (3), Navi Mumbai (2), Thane (2), Pimpri-Chinchwad (1), Kalyan (1), Raigad (1), and Panvel (1). Health officials said all diagnosed patients had mild symptoms.
