Netflix movie branded 'too real' as people terrified by 'haunting' disaster film
The End We Start From is a film that shows a world in which the UK is hit by the devastating effects of climate change - and viewers have branded the disaster movie 'too real'
The movie "The End We Start From" depicts the UK being overwhelmed by severe climate change consequences. Jodie Comer plays a young mother struggling to care for her newborn baby amidst catastrophic flooding in London.
A review on Rotten Tomatoes defines the film as a heart-wrenching portrayal of survival and the hardships of refugees fleeing climate change. One reviewer wrote: "The End We Start From presents the purest form of dystopia. It's not an Orwell or Atwood riff.
"Rather, it's 'imagine if the current state of Britain was even worse': overflow camps, social disorder as people kill for supplies, things like that. The film's world just feels so real."
As the UK becomes increasingly flooded, the movie showcases a rapidly escalating crisis with food supplies and accommodations for the displaced in desperately short supply. The central character and her husband are forced to flee their home, leaving their baby with his grandparents, reports the Express.
Tragedy soon strikes, and the couple must persevere not only for their own survival, but also for that of their infant son. Another reviewer said: "This dystopian thriller explores the truth about surviving, showing both the dark and scary with glimmers of joy, laughter, and humanity.
"This was emotional, and I felt everything as if I was right there – I basically had my arms crossed the whole time out of stress. Unsurprisingly, Jodie Comer's performance is brilliant. I also really liked the prevalence of water, the sounds that at times felt overwhelming (pounding rain, screaming crowds, crying babies, etc.), and the creative angles and use of reflections."
The film features Killing Eve star Jodie Comer, with Joel Fry playing her husband 'R', and a cameo from Benedict Cumberbatch. The gripping tale of survival was brought to the screen by Alice Birch, who adapted it from Megan Hunter's 2017 novel The End We Start From.
Benedict Cumberbatch's company SunnyMarch, in partnership with Hera Pictures, secured the rights to the book - hence his brief appearance. While the film's themes are rooted in dystopian fiction, many viewers saw it as a chilling prediction of what the future could hold for our country.
One viewer said: "A beautiful, yet scary and enlightening piece on terror, loss, love and movement. This shows a picture of what life is already like for some and could become likely for many. Jodie Comer is fantastic and is supported by an excellent cast."
Audiences have been moved to tears by the powerful performances in the movie. One fan wrote: "Jodie Comer soley is the reason to see this brief yet impactful film - it is one that you feel distant from yet so understandably close. It is sprinkled with loss and disbelief in humanity yet recovered by the kindred souls that come together throughout with beautifully displayed friendship. It starts with a feeling of desolation but ends with a sense of renewal."
With an impressive 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it's clear that The End We Start From is making a big impact on viewers. You can watch it now on Netflix and experience the emotional rollercoaster for yourself.

American Gangster film based on true story that's a 'must watch' if you love the Godfather
The gangster film, which is now streaming on Amazon Prime, has been hailed as very "underrated" and the "best true crime drama out there". Biographical crime film Kill the Irishman is a movie based on the life of the Irish-American gangster Danny Greene that has viewers raving. The movie, which is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime and Apple TV, is an on-screen adaptation of Rick Porrello's book To Kill the Irishman: The War That Crippled the Mafia. The film's official synopsis reads: "Kill the Irishman tells the true story of Danny Greene, a scrappy union representative who rose through the ranks of the Cleveland underworld and became a force to be reckoned with, ultimately engaging in a turf war with the Italian Mafia. Greene's rise to power and his eventual assassination, which is depicted in the film, are the central themes. "The film explores Greene's ambition, his clashes with the Mafia, and the impact of his actions on organised crime in Cleveland and beyond." Directed by Jonathan Hensleigh, the star studded cast includes Ray Stevenson, Vincent D'Onofrio, Val Kilmer, Christopher Walken, Linda Cardellini , Tony Darrow and Robert Davi, among others. The film, which is also available to watch on Apple TV, has been applauded by gangster movie fanatics, who have branded it a 'must watch' if you are a fan of The Godfather, the Express reports. One critic stated in an IMDb review: "Great cast, great acting, and an absolute must-see for mafia-philes. "Unlike many bio-dramas, this one moves along at a rocket pace, leaving the audience on the edge of their seats." Another hailed the film as "very underrated". Kill the Irishman received mixed reviews upon its release and was noted for its similarities to Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas (1990). It was awarded a divisive score of 63% from Rotten Tomatoes critics, who state: "Kill the Irishman may not add much in the way of new ingredients to its crowded genre, but the admirable efforts of a solidly assembled cast add extra depth to a familiar story." However, other reviewers were quick to jump to its defence as one insisted it it "the best true crime drama out there" and another agreed they "absolutely love this [film]. Kill the Irishman is not the only gangster film that Amazon viewers are currently raving about as another crime film, that's been described as 'poetic' has recently resurfaced. Starring two forgotten Hollywood legends, the 1990s American gangster film, Miller's Crossing, created by Joel and Ethan Coen, is considered to be "an all time classic" by viewers. The film follows the story of two rival gangs, set during the 1929 Prohibition, as Irish mob boss Leo O'Bannon, portrayed by Albert Finney, sets off a war between the two as he protects his girlfriend's brother, Bernie, who lands himself in trouble with the other group. Unbeknownst to him, his girlfriend is having an affair with his partner-in-crime, Tom Reagan, played by Gabriel Byrne. Despite Tom's attempts to feed Bernie to the wolves, Leo trusts in his decision to protect him. However, while his Italian gangster enemy Johnny Caspar is growing in power in the background, he needs the help from his right-hand man now more than ever, that is, until he finds out he's been sleeping with his girlfriend. The title boasts a near 'perfect' rating as one viewer wrote on Rotten Tomatoes:"All-time classic. This has all the hallmarks of a noir. "The script is very complicated but never convoluted to the point where you can't follow it, which is a testament to the masterful editing. My only real complaint is while the music is good, I wish it was used a bit more, but this really is never dry. Everyone should give this a try once."

Prince Harry confirms his UK return date after losing devastating security battle
Prince Harry has confirmed when he will be in on British soil for a very important trip after a UK judge dismissed his plea to restore his state-funded security last month. Prince Harry has confirmed when he will make his next trip to Britain following a UK judge's dismissal of his plea to restore his state-funded security last month. While it's expected that the Duke of Sussex will return long before this date, Harry has confirmed he will be back on British soil for the Invictus Games when they are held in Birmingham in 2027. Back in July 2024, it was announced that the city had won its bid to host the Games but the specific dates were yet to be confirmed. However, this all changed on Tuesday when the official Invictus Games Birmingham 2027 social media account posted: "SAVE THE DATES! The Invictus Games Birmingham 2027 are coming: 10th–17th July. Opening Ceremony: 10th July. Closing Ceremony: 17th July." Prince Harry found inspiration to launch the Invictus Games after attending the Warrior Games in Colorado in 2013 and witnessing how injured American military personnel thrived on the challenge of taking part in competitive sports that aided their recovery. He went on to launch the first games in London in 2014 and has since held the tournament in locations all around the world including Orlando, Sydney, Dusseldorf and, most recently, hosted the first winter version of the games in Whistler, Canada. The update regarding the Invictus Games comes a little over a month after the duke lost his the latest stage of his legal battle in the UK, the Express reports. Shortly after his defeat which saw a UK judge dismiss the prince's plea for restoration of state-funded security, Harry took part in a scathing interview with the BBC. The broadcaster released the interview where the duke said he was "devastated" by the situation and publicly confessed his wishes for "reconciliation" with the Royal Family, including his dad King Charles. In an emotional statement, he made an eyebrow raising remark about the King's health, sparking concern after he stated he does not know how long the monarch has left to live as he continues his treatment for cancer. The Duke also said: "I can't see a world in which I would bring my wife and children back to the UK at this point. "There have been so many disagreements between myself and some of my family". Despite this, he added that he had now "forgiven" them. Harry continued: "I would love reconciliation with my family. There's no point continuing to fight any more, life is precious." He referred to the dispute over his security as something which had "always been the sticking point". Prince Harry first fell out with his family in January 2020 when he relocated to the US with his wife Meghan Markle. The pair stepped down from their senior royal roles less than two years after officially tying the knot at St George's Chapel in 2018. Harry has only came face to face with his family a number of times since, including at the late Queen Elizabeth's funeral in 2022 and King Charles' Coronation in 2023. He is believed to not be on friendly terms with any senior members of the Firm including his brother, Prince William and his mother-in-law, Queen Camilla.

Mary Berry's homemade quiche recipe is perfect for a summer picnic
Mary Berry's Quiche Lorraine recipe is perfect for picnics and garden parties, and it's so simple to make at home. The BBC star shared it in her cookbook, 'Cookery Course' Summer is very much upon us and what better way to enjoy it than with a scrumptious cheesy quiche? It's a breeze to whip up from scratch, perfect for wowing your friends and family. Mary Berry's signature Quiche Lorraine recipe, featuring crispy bacon, a luscious creamy filling, and a generous topping of cheese, is the epitome of comfort food. Ideal for any summer gathering, picnic, or even as a delightful dinner treat, this dish is sure to tantalise your taste buds. The beloved Great British Bake Off star divulged this simple yet delectable recipe in her 'Cookery Course' cookbook, assuring that it's a cinch to bake. Mary advises in her book: "A classic French quiche is a great stand-by for lunch or supper and is always best eaten hot or warm." How to make a homemade Quiche Lorraine Ingredients For the pastry: 175g of plain flour 85g of chilled butter For the filling: 175g of unsmoked streaky bacon 125g of Gruyere cheese 250ml of single cream Two large eggs One onion Salt and paper Method Begin by rolling out the pastry on a lightly floured surface, then line a flan tin with it. Pop the tin into the fridge to chill for half an hour. In the meantime, crank up your oven to 220C (Fan 200C or Gas Mark 7), reports the Express. After chilling, blind-bake the pastry case in the oven for about ten minutes before removing it. Mary notes: "Baking the pastry 'blind' first, without the filling, ensures that the pastry case is cooked through so it doesn't get a soggy bottom." Next, dial down the oven's heat to 180C (Fan 160C or Gas Mark 4). Whisk together the eggs, cream, salt, and pepper in a bowl, mix well, then pour the mixture into the cooled pastry case. Fry the bacon until it's crispy in a pan over medium heat, then use a slotted spoon to transfer it to the pastry case. Retain the bacon grease in the pan and proceed to cook the onion on medium heat until it turns golden. Add this to the pastry and top it off with grated cheese. Bake the quiche in the oven for 25 to 30 minutes until it's golden and just set. Be mindful not to overbake the quiche as it can become tough and full of holes.
