Israel Intensifies Military Operations in Gaza Amid New Egyptian Proposal for Ceasefire Deal
As diplomatic efforts continue to seek a resolution to the ongoing war in Gaza, Israel has escalated its military campaign, launching a new ground operation in the Shujaiya neighborhood of northern Gaza, and intensifying air and artillery strikes across Khan Younis, eastern Gaza City, and Rafah.
The Israeli Broadcasting Authority reported Saturday that Egypt has proposed a new ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal, described as a "compromise" between Israel and Hamas. Despite this development, Israeli tanks advanced into eastern Shujaiya early in the morning, accompanied by heavy bombardment, as the Israeli military announced the start of a new ground assault aimed at expanding the so-called "security zone" and exerting pressure on Hamas to regain control of more territory and secure the release of Israeli hostages.
According to the Israeli army, the 401st Brigade was tasked with expanding operations in northern Gaza and destroying Hamas infrastructure. The assault triggered mass evacuations, with Israeli forces ordering the immediate evacuation of several neighborhoods. Thousands of Palestinians were forced to flee from Shujaiya and Zaytoun, carrying what belongings they could as they sought refuge in the central and western areas of Gaza City.
Hamas, meanwhile, warned that nearly half of the Israeli captives are being held in areas Israel has recently targeted for evacuation. The group said it would not relocate the captives, citing the risks involved.
Abu Obeida, spokesperson for Hamas's military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, warned Israel: 'If the enemy cares about the lives of its captives, it must immediately enter negotiations for their release. The warning has been given.'
He held Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government fully responsible for the hostages' fate, arguing that a commitment to earlier agreements would have already secured their release.
Amid these developments, *The Wall Street Journal* revealed that Israel is preparing for a large-scale ground invasion of Gaza, with the goal of long-term occupation and the complete dismantling of Hamas's remaining infrastructure. The operation is reportedly led by newly appointed Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir and enjoys the full backing of Netanyahu's government.
In parallel diplomatic moves, White House envoy Steve Weikoff is expected to travel to the Middle East next week. According to Axios, Weikoff will meet Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer in Abu Dhabi to discuss a potential ceasefire and exchange deal. He may also visit Doha or Cairo, depending on progress in negotiations, with hopes pinned on Hamas agreeing to release around five live hostages.
Meanwhile, the humanitarian toll continues to grow. Gaza's Health Ministry reported at least 60 Palestinians killed in the past 24 hours due to Israeli strikes. The UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, reported that the collapse of a ceasefire between March 18 and 23 led to the displacement of 142,000 people, bringing the total number of internally displaced persons to 1.9 million since the war began.
UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini condemned the situation, noting that around 100 children are being killed or injured daily. He stated that the death toll among children has reached approximately 15,000 since the start of the conflict, calling Gaza 'a forbidden land for children.'

Stocks diverge as tariffs deadline looms - Markets & Companies
Stock markets diverged and the dollar rose Wednesday as US President Donald Trump ruled out a fresh delay to reciprocal tariffs. Tokyo-listed equities took a hit from Trump's threats to ramp up Japanese levies, Hong Kong closed higher and Europe's main indices were up around midday. Stocks trading was "taking a relatively positive tone despite the tech-led weakness seen in the US" on Tuesday, noted Rostro chief market analyst Joshua Mahony. Oil prices jumped more than one percent as crude-producer Iran suspended cooperation with the United Nations' nuclear watchdog, days after a ceasefire in a war that saw Israeli and US strikes on nuclear sites in the Islamic republic. Market watchers reacted also to Trump's signature budget bill that scraped through the Senate. Optimism over an extension to deep tax cuts helped to offset warnings it could add around $3 trillion to the national debt. A week before Trump's 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs ends, few governments have struck deals to avert the taxes, though White House officials say several are in the pipeline. And while the administration had set July 9 as the deadline to finalise pacts, investors largely expect that to be pushed back or countries given extra time. However, the president said Tuesday he was "not thinking about the pause" and again warned he would end negotiations or hike some duties. Among those in his sights was Japan, which he slammed this week over US rice and auto exports to the country. Asia Society Policy Institute vice president, Wendy Cutler, told AFP that "Japan's refusal to open its rice market, coupled with the US resistance to lowering automotive tariffs, may lead to the reimposition of Japan's 24 percent reciprocal tariff". In Washington senators passed Trump's "Big, Beautiful Bill" he says will boost the economy by extending tax cuts and slashing spending on programmes such as Medicare. The legislation now faces a tough passage through the House of Representatives, where some Republicans have raised concerns about its cost amid already heightened fears over the country's finances. On the corporate front Wednesday, shares in Qantas dropped more than two percent after the Australian airline said it was probing a "significant" cyberattack where hackers infiltrated a system containing sensitive data on six million customers. Hong Kong-listed Chinese tech titan Alibaba dipped after saying it would issue US$7 billion in subsidies for certain purchases. Hong Kong is expected to lead the world in IPO financing this year despite uncertainty from geopolitical tensions and trade tariffs, accountancy giant PwC said. EU Sets 90% Emissions Cut by 2040
Israa Farhan The European Commission is set to propose a new legally binding target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040, marking a key milestone in the European Union's long-term strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. This anticipated legislation follows a 2023 recommendation by the Commission calling for a 90% cut in emissions compared to 1990 levels. The new proposal, expected on Wednesday, would turn that advisory target into a binding commitment for all EU member states. Currently, the EU mandates a 55% reduction in harmful emissions by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. The latest data from May shows that the bloc is on track to reach a 54% reduction by the end of the decade, narrowing the gap to the official 2030 target. The European Commission has urged national governments to fully implement their climate strategies to ensure that emission goals are met on schedule. These climate targets are aligned with the Paris Agreement, adopted in 2015, which seeks to limit global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels. As part of its obligations under the agreement, the EU must submit a comprehensive climate action plan through 2035 before the COP30 UN Climate Conference in Brazil this November.
