Penang LRT: Land Secured, Pre-Construction Advances Ahead Of Schedule

BusinessToday21-04-2025
Mass Rapid Transit Corp Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) has secured access to 86 land plots and completed gazettement under Section 8 of the Land Acquisition Act 1960 — a milestone achieved well ahead of its original October 2025 target.
The progress comes as part of the Penang Light Rail Transit (LRT) Mutiara Line project, which remains on track and is progressing according to schedule, MRT Corp confirmed in a statement today.
The Mutiara Line, stretching 29.5 km and featuring 21 stations, aims to boost mobility across Penang Island and the mainland. The line will connect Penang South Reclamation's Island A to Penang Sentral and Komtar Station, with trains running alternately across both routes to maximise coverage.
A critical milestone was the recent approval of advance works under Section 20A of the Town and Country Planning Act 1976, granted on April 15, which further cements the project's forward momentum.
The company clarified that SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd — the main civil contractor for Package 1 — is currently working to fulfil several post-award contract conditions. Only after these are satisfied will the official Notice to Proceed (NTP) be issued.
MRT Corp explained: 'As the design-and-build civil contractor for Package 1, SRS must finalise the designs and construction drawings for the civil structures within the project scope after receiving the NTP. Another critical aspect of pre-construction work is the relocation of utilities, which must be completed before any station or viaduct-related construction activity can occur.'
This statement comes in response to a recent news report quoting MCA vice-president Tan Teik Cheng, who questioned the project's status and highlighted that the official NTP had yet to be issued, despite the LRT's formal launch in January. Related

Malaysia bracing for possible US tariffs on semiconductors

The US is investigating whether extensive reliance on foreign imports of pharmaceuticals and semiconductors poses a national security threat. (Pixabay pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Malaysia needs to remain prepared for the possibility of the US imposing tariffs on the semiconductor industry amid a review by Washington, says investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz. Tengku Zafrul told the Dewan Rakyat that 100,000 workers, especially in Penang and Kedah, may be at risk of losing their jobs if high tariffs reduce the demand for electrical and electronic goods in the US. Although semiconductor products are currently exempted from the 19% tariff imposed on goods from Malaysia, he said, the US government is investigating whether extensive reliance on foreign imports of pharmaceuticals and semiconductors poses a national security threat. 'The US could impose additional tariffs on grounds of national security,' he said in a ministerial statement on the tariffs. 'We cannot take any changes in US trade policies lightly as they will negatively impact Malaysia,' he said, stressing that the US was Malaysia's largest export destination and one of the nation's main sources of foreign investment last year. On Aug 1, the US announced a 19% tariff on Malaysian exports effective Aug 8, a reduction from the 25% tariff previously imposed. Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines were also hit with a 19% tariff rate, while Vietnam faces a slightly higher rate of 20%. Tengku Zafrul said although his ministry had hoped for a lower rate, he believed that negotiators managed to achieve a 'reasonable outcome' without compromising the country's key policies and sovereignty. He said Malaysia and the US were still in the process of reaching an agreement on a joint statement that includes the mutually agreed upon commitments. He also said Malaysia and the US are working towards a reciprocal trade agreement to safeguard long-term cooperation and minimise the risk of punitive measures. Malaysia is the world's sixth-largest semiconductor exporter, with E&E exports surpassing RM600 billion last year.

Why build MRT stations near the rich when the rich don't use public transports?

MALAYSIAN property developers are an interesting group of people. They sell their homes before even starting the construction, resulting in a good number of abandoned homes. And recently, a netizen raises another interesting developer practice on the cyberspace which attracted the attention of the online community. According to @evoverebitda, Malaysia is a weird place because the MRT stations are usually conveniently located nearby to the rich enclave. He believes the rich will not be using public transport as they already have drivers, hence these conveniences are but a waste. Malaysia is so weird. All the housing near to MRT in the mid of KL are priced at RM4-12k. You think rich people use MRT to go buy groceries, go work? Most of my neighbours have their own drivers 😐😐😐 Why the rich people area are walkable to MRT but not for mid income people? — 爱薇 (@evoverebitda) August 2, 2025 His post has since turned into a hot bed for discussion, receiving over 8,400 reposts and 123 comments. @evoverebitda further added that his house is next to a restaurant and he could see all the Alphards lined up there as the rich people's drivers usually go there to eat. He said none of his neighbours use the MRT. However, @thishrocks said the expats still utilise the public transports while a sceptical @ucswcc stated that he was generalising all the housing although it only occurred in his area. On another note, @gooner_97 remarked that MRT stations have a way of jacking up the rental price of an apartment unit. @MalayBitcoiner further said that the MRT stations are there to increase the value of the properties bought by these rich people. The mystery begins to clear as we observe more of the comments: And this is why the rich become richer while the poor become poorer. If even the roofs above our heads and the built environment is rigged against us, how will the poor ever be able to escape their circumstances? —Aug 1, 2025 Main image: MRT Corp

Tengku Zafrul: Malaysia makes trade concessions to US to keep exports flowing, protect 100,000 jobs

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 — Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz said Malaysia has agreed to a series of trade concessions in response to demands from the United States (US) to safeguard the country's export-driven economy and protect local jobs. He explained that the United States remains Malaysia's largest export destination, with exports reaching RM198.65 billion in 2024, and is also a major source of foreign investment, contributing RM32.82 billion to date. '..... Any changes in US trade policy cannot be taken lightly, as they could have a negative impact on Malaysia's economy. 'For example, it is estimated that up to 100,000 workers, particularly in Penang and Kedah, could be at risk of losing their jobs if electrical and electronic products can no longer be exported to the US due to high tariffs,' he told the Dewan Rakyat today.
