Govt doubles pension for JP senanis
The proposal was cleared at a cabinet meeting chaired by CM

, who himself played a lead role in the 'JP movement' that began in 1974.
"The pension for 'JP senanis', who had spent more than six months behind bars, has been raised to Rs 30,000 per month from Rs 15,000, and for those who served shorter prison terms, it has been hiked from Rs 7,500 to Rs 15,000," cabinet secretariat department's additional chief secretary S Siddharth said.
"The JP senanis who participated in the JP movement and the subsequent emergency period between March 18, 1974 and March 21, 1977 will get double the amount as "samman pension" now," he said.
There are altogether 3,354 JP senani who are currently getting pension in the state, a home dept official said.
Nitish had launched the pension scheme named after Jayaprakash Narayan in 2009. Though Nitish fulfils the criteria for the pension, he never applied for it.

P Vasu might be 102 but still moves about his house in Cheruvannur in Kerala's Kozhikode district with the help of a walker, reads at least two newspapers a day, and watches television news with great intent, trying to keep himself informed of what's happening in the country. P Vasu: He fought for freedom, and against Emergency Born in January 1923, Vasu got a whiff of nationalistic sentiments early when his father took him to hear Mahatma Gandhi when the latter visited Kozhikode in 1934. He was just 11 then, but by the time he was in his late-teens in 1942, Vasu found himself leading an agitation by the Congress in his native Cheruvannur on the sidelines of the Quit India movement. That year, he was arrested and sentenced by a judge to three-and-a-half months in jail , where he was tortured. In 1943, Vasu had to go underground in erstwhile Madras for over nine months after the police attempted to put him in preventive custody in connection with a case of a bomb threat on Farook bridge. 'I had nothing to do with it but because I was jailed previously, my name was on the police list and I had to go into hiding. It was an extremely tough period,' Vasu told HT over phone. After Independence, Vasu joined the socialist party and was given its membership by stalwart Jayaprakash Narayan in Kozhikode. His strong beliefs in socialist ideals earned him the nickname among locals -- 'Socio Vasu'. In 1951, the then Madras presidency, under which the Malabar region in Kerala fell at the time, offered 10 acres of land in Wayanad and ₹2,000 to several freedom fighters including Vasu. But he refused to accept. 'Jayaprakash Narayan told us that we fought for the country's freedom, not for financial gains. Accepting it would have gone against my socialist ideals,' said Vasu. In 1975 during the Emergency, Vasu was beaten by the police for picketing the local post office. He spent 23 days at the Kozhikode Medical College hospital for treatment. In 1997, on the 50th anniversary of independence, Vasu was felicitated in Delhi by then President KR Narayanan. Is he happy about the present state of the country? 'No,' came the reply. 'It is not the India we envisioned in 1947. We are losing our secular ideals,' he said.

‘Vote theft': Sharmila leads candlelight rally, targets EC, PM
Andhra Pradesh Congress Commitee (APCC) president Y. S. Sharmila on Thursday criticised the BJP-led Central government and the Election Commission of India (ECI), during a candlelight rally organised by the party on Thursday. Speaking during rally organised by party leaders from Andhra Ratna Bhavan, Ms. Sharmila called out the BJP for 'mockery of democracy, with the support of the ECI,' and raised slogans of 'Vote-chor gaddi chod.' She questioned how the EC gave permission to register new voters using false data. 'The Election Commission has no answers to the questions asked by party leader Rahul Gandhi. It is matter of shame,' she added. She added, the EC, is supposed to safeguard democracy and the Constitution, is behaving like an agent of the BJP. 'Like all other institutions in the country, even the EC is playing into the hands of Prime Minister Narendra Modi' she alleged. She added that the Congress demands answers to questions asked by Rahul Gandhi. 'It has come to light that lakhs of votes have been removed from the Bihar electoral rolls,' adding: 'The irregularities are so blatant that Rahul Gandhi went and had tea with seven persons who were supposedly dead. It's a shame for a democracy like India, she said, demanding an enquiry of the highest level and stringent punishment to those found guilty.

I won't go to jail by denotifying land for Peripheral Ring Road-2 project in Bengaluru: DK Shivakumar
Bengaluru: Ruling out denotification of land notified for Peripheral Ring Road-2 (PRR-2) project, the govt Thursday said the 52-km stretch connecting Hosur Road with Mysuru Road will be implemented. The govt issued a primary notification for 2,716 acres of land in 2005-06, of which a final notification was issued for executing the Major Arterial Road (MAR) between Magadi Road and Mysuru Road, which forms part of PRR-2 alignment. The MAR stretch of over 10.7km is in advanced stages of completion. Replying to a question raised by BJP MLC HS Gopinath in the legislative council, deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar said there is no question of denotifying the land and the project will be implemented. Shivakumar said, "Though the primary notification was issued in 2005-06, successive govts did not issue a final notification for acquisition of land nor sanctioned the plan. I am not ready to denotify the land and go to jail. This is also the govt's stand." Shivakumar said wherever residential structures have come up along the alignment, flyovers will be built to avoid land acquisition.
