High Court upholds conviction of Kuching teacher for sexually assaulting six students, orders jail time to run concurrently
Judicial Commissioner Datuk Faridz Gohim Abdullah made the decision after dismissing the appeal of the 35-year-old appellant to set aside the sentence and conviction handed down by the Sessions Court on Oct 21, 2022.
The original consecutive sentence against the 35-year-old appellant totalled 90 years, with each charge carrying 15 years' imprisonment.
However, the court upheld the 24 strokes of the cane imposed by the lower court.
All the six charges were framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which is punishable under Section 14 of the same Act and read together with Section 16 of the same Act, which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and possible caning upon conviction.
According to the facts of the case, between 11.30pm and 4am in March, April, and May 2018, the teacher sexually assaulted the students, aged between 14 and 16, at separate times and dates in the school compound.
He touched the victims' private parts and thighs, as well as hugged one of them.
Police reports were lodged by all the victims and investigations revealed that several of them had been assaulted on multiple occasions.

He highlighted a scam involving 'sugar mummy' service offers on TikTok to lure teenagers, coercing them to share personal content classified as Child Sexual Exploitation Material (C-SET). Victims are then extorted for thousands of ringgit to avoid public exposure. 'Even after ransom payments, syndicates continue selling the compromising material on platforms like Telegram to paedophile communities,' Siraj told Bernama Radio today. He also warned social media merchants face new risks of being falsely accused when scammers duplicate their ads, deceive buyers and exploit buyer information to defraud the genuine sellers. When victims report fraud, the legitimate merchants' accounts may be frozen under suspicion, he added. Siraj also noted modern scams increasingly use AI-generated fake content, leaked data from major tech companies like Meta, and social engineering to study victim behaviour. To address these threats, the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) now operates 24/7 with an expanded cybercrime mandate. He urged parents to closely monitor their children's online activity and called on the government to provide AI literacy education for the public. Don't play cops-and-judges over Jalur Gemilang issues, Fahmi tells Malaysians
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — The public has been reminded not to resort to vigilantism or unlawful actions against any party committing offences linked to the Jalur Gemilang flag, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said. All matters involving investigations, prosecutions and court decisions must be left entirely to the authorities, Fahmi said following a reminder issued by the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) yesterday. 'Don't act as the police, lawyers and judge (as) it's wrong, leave it to the police to investigate, leave it to the AGC to prosecute and leave it to the courts to make a decision,' he said after the launch of the Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya level National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang Flag 2025 campaign at the Institut Pendidikan Guru (IPG) Kampus Bahasa Melayu here today. Communications Ministry deputy secretary-general (strategic communications and creative industry) Nik Kamaruzaman Nik Husin; Information Department director-general Julina Johan and IPG Kampus Bahasa Melayu director Dr Masitah Mohammad Yusof also attended the launch. He said he was given to understand that there were individuals called up by the police after a rally that was held to 'teach' certain parties, but further action will be left to the authorities. Cops find ‘positive leads' on attack on Rafizi's son
The attack on Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli's 12-year-old son occurred at a shopping mall in Putrajaya on Wednesday afternoon. PETALING JAYA : Police say they have found multiple positive leads in their investigation into the attack on Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli's son. Selangor police chief Shazeli Kahar said the leads could help hunt down those involved, and followed examination of CCTV footage around the shopping mall where the incident occurred, Bernama reported. 'There are leads from the CCTV recordings, but it's not complete at this time,' he said. Shazeli said 14 people have been summoned to assist in the investigation. Police are also working with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to investigate the threatening text messages that Rafizi had received a day after the attack. The attack on Rafizi's 12-year-old son occurred at a shopping mall in Putrajaya at about 2pm on Wednesday. The former PKR deputy president said CCTV footage showed that two men, dressed in black with their faces fully covered by helmets, had followed his wife's car on a motorcycle before the incident. His son, who was dragged and stabbed with a syringe, was rushed to hospital for treatment and a checkup. The assailants escaped. Rafizi suspected that the attack was planned, and that his wife was likely observed by the assailants for a few days before the attack was carried out. He also said his son will need to undergo six months of medical tests to rule out the possibility that he was injected with anything dangerous.
