Smart Roaster set for a return, and it could look like this

Auto Express16-06-2025
Auto Express found out recently that Smart is preparing a successor for its ForTwo city car, which could leave the door open for the Smart Roadster to return.
Introduced back in 2003, the tiny, lightweight two-seater was respected for its balanced mid-engined layout. One noteworthy fan was legendary Formula One car designer Gordon Murray, who used a Roadster as his daily driver.
We asked Smart UK CEO Jason Allbutt about a new Roadster during an exclusive interview with Auto Express. He laughed, but seemed enthusiastic: 'We used to have one of those in the family, and [it was] particularly good fun,' he told us. Advertisement - Article continues below
'For a country that has more rain than probably any other European market, we are lovers of coupés and roadsters. So yes, I could see a possibility for such a car in the UK.'
As encouraging as that is to hear, Allbutt quickly added that there are no immediate plans to revive the Roadster. The brand currently has much bigger fish to fry, starting with the launch of its biggest model yet, the all-new Smart #5 SUV, which is due to go on sale this year.
Following soon after that should be a new electric family hatchback called Smart #6, which we expect to see in the coming months. Hopefully, by the time that arrives, we'll have commitment from the brand and a vision for the new ForTwo city car. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below
But if the idea of making a new sports car catches on and the Roadster does make a comeback, what could we expect from a new interpretation of the original formula? Lightness and compact size would be key, and it's near-certain to be electric.
Smart is committed to its vision of being an EV-only brand, but that shouldn't stop it forging ahead with plans for a new sports car. Indeed, several established names will make the switch to electric over the next two years. Most recently, we learned about the new Alpine A110 due to be unveiled in 2026, which its maker says will weigh less than 1.5 tonnes and feature innovative in-wheel motors. The next-generation Porsche Boxster and Cayman will also be ditching petrol power, as will the Lotus Emira and the Mazda MX-5.
Given the individual look of each of Smart's current models, it's impossible to say with any certainty what a next-gen Roadster may look like. We believe the design team would keep the original's relatively lengthy wheelbase, with the wheels pushed out to the corners, plus the cab-rearward look and long bonnet. Features such as the contrasting side blade and rollover hoop could also be carried over.
But Allbutt clearly has reservations about how ready roadster buyers may be when it comes to embracing electric cars.
'I think a lot of people that drive these cars historically have been traditional car enthusiasts,' he told us. 'Part of the joy of having the roof down, in case you have less hair to be ruffled nowadays, is also to hear the sound of the engine.
'Maybe there's a new audience that would be looking at [an electric roadster] in a different way. I'm not quite sure yet as to who the buyers of that car really are. It's too early to tell right now, but we'll see.'
How those other sports cars perform could influence Smart's decision to make a new Roadster. The brand is still half-owned by Mercedes, in tandem with Chinese group Geely, giving the company access to the latest technology and the ability to respond quickly to trends.

Transfer news live: Isak forcing Liverpool move, Donnarumma's agent rages over Man Utd deal, Chelsea agree Garnacho terms

Just a few days to go until the start of the new Premier League season and club's are looking to finalise any deals for new signings ahead of their campaigns beginning. Liverpool are still pursuing Alexander Isak having sold Darwin Nunez to Al Hilal for £46.3m, which should open up funds for a bid but Newcastle have, so far, been resolute in their desire to keep the Swedish striker. The Magpies do not wish to sell, but the Reds may be encouraged by Isak's insistence that his Newcastle career is over, with it reported that he will not wish to reintegrate with the side, even if he stays beyond the deadline. Should he force Newcastle's hand over a sale, Liverpool will be the key beneficiaries. Manchester United, meanhwhile, have been handed a huge boost in their pursuit of Gianluigi Donnarumma, with the Italian shot-stopper now looking certain to leave PSG off the back of a stellar 2024/25 campaign. He was entirely left out of their squad to face Tottenham in the Super Cup, with Luis Enrique opting for new signing Lucas Chevalier between the sticks, and his agent is furious at PSG's handling of the situation. It comes after United unveiled their new signing Benjamin Sesko to supporters at Old Trafford on Saturday, completing their front line overhaul this summer with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha set to feature in a new-look front three for Ruben Amorim. Spurs are also preparing to bolster their own forward line further by signing Crystal Palace 's Eberechi Eze. Palace want a fee in excess of £60m and an official offer could soon go in though Palace's Community Shield win over Liverpool may now make a deal harder to negotiate. Thomas Frank's side are in need of a creator following the long-term injury to James Maddison and are also in talks for Manchester City 's Savinho. Donnarumma's agent fumes with PSG over Man Utd deal Gianluigi Donnarumma's agent, Enzo Raiola, has hit out at Paris Saint-Germain over their handling of his future. The goalkeeper is determined to leave PSG this summer, with Manchester United pushing hard to sign the Italian who lifted the Champions League last season. He was entirely left out of their squad to face Tottenham in the Super Cup tonight, with Luis Enrique opting for new signing Lucas Chevalier instead. Raiola told Sky Sports: 'We are shocked by PSG. There's zero respect by the club after 4 years together. We will consider the situation also with our legal team 'We will consider solutions now, maybe in Premier League there will be clubs able to pay what's needed. Paris Saint-Germain are asking for big money. They talk about respect, but it's only about the money.' Lawrence Ostlere13 August 2025 07:21

The ten technical colleges that will train 40,000 construction workers

The government has unveiled the locations for ten technical colleges across England, which will train 40,000 construction workers as part of its ambitious plan to deliver 1.5 million new homes within the current parliamentary term. The 10 locations are part of the Department for Education's planned £100 million investment in training workers. The initiative aims to enhance the skills of tens of thousands of existing builders, bricklayers, electricians, carpenters, and plumbers by 2029. The plans are in addition to a separate target, announced in March, to train 60,000 construction workers. The Department for Education said the move was part of reducing its reliance on foreign labour. A further 100,000 construction workers will be recruited by the Construction Skills Mission Board each year by the end of the Parliament. The construction technical excellence colleges will be based in: Derby College Group in the East Midlands West Suffolk College in the East of England New City College in Greater London City of Sunderland College in north-east England Wigan and Leigh College in north-west England North Kent College in south-east England Exeter College in south-west England Bedford College, which the government said will be cross-regional Dudley College of Technology in the West Midlands Leeds College of Building, which will cover Yorkshire and the Humber Some are long-standing colleges, but will receive extra funding and support from the government. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said: 'We need skilled workers to deliver the homes, schools and hospitals that communities across the country are crying out for, and today's announcement underlines our commitment to the next generation of homegrown talent. 'Construction Technical Excellence Colleges will enable us to invest in people and give them the skills they need to break down barriers to opportunity.' A recent Government survey found that the percentage of construction firms funding or offering training to their workers has fallen from 57% in 2011 to 49% in 2024. David Hughes, chief executive of the Association of Colleges, said: 'Today's announcement is very positive news for people wanting good jobs, for the construction employers looking for skilled people and for the government's ambitions to build 1.5 million new homes. 'It represents significant investment and trust in the 10 successful colleges, and the college sector, recognising their crucial role in boosting the country's construction sector by opening up high quality learning opportunities all over the country.' Tim Balcon, chief executive of the Construction Industry Training Board, said: 'It's wonderful to see the progress being made towards establishing these technical excellence colleges for construction. 'They represent a transformative opportunity for people to complete local vocational training, helping to drive regional growth and nurture the next generation of skilled construction workers in local communities.' Shadow education minister Saqib Bhatti said: 'We welcome any investment into skills and training for British people, but this pledge rings hollow in the face of Labour's broken promises. 'What young people need are good and secure jobs, but thanks to Labour's jobs tax, jobs are being cut a record rates and unemployment is on the rise. Combined with Labour's cuts to Level 7 apprenticeships, this government is clearly not on the side our next generation. 'Only the Conservatives are on the side of Britain's makers – those who work hard, do the right thing and want to get on, and only we can be trusted to deliver the low tax, pro-growth economy that supports jobs for the future.'
